The Singularity audio Oni just launched. It isnt the first iem to feature a mems driver (the imr seraph beat it to market in a tribbrid format using a Usound brand driver ) but it is the first earphone to exclusively use mems drivers (which is the way it should be done). This set was created as joint effort between Xmems and Singularity and if youve been lucky enough to try the Xmems demo, it was essentially the prototype to this set.
Xmems drivers are the future of audio. You’ll understand once you try them.
I realize that this is potentially an exciting new frontier for portable audio, but having a presale on them with no specs, no listed power requirement despite specifying “unique amplification circuitry” in the cable as a requirement, and no frequency response or other relevant graphs makes this a hard sale without a hands-on demo, especially above a kilobuck. All that being said, I hope these are The Bee’s Knees and I wish them all of the success possible. We live in an age where even blind-buying has levels of transparency, and this is essentially opaque. Not a great look for what appears to be a startup but, as they say, the proof is in the pudding.
The proof is indeed in the pudding. And the pudding in question is magical pudding that tastes like whatever your favorite food is, and also makes you taller and lets you cut to the front of any line and makes your hair look like it does in shampoo commercials. It’s very good pudding.
Im sure offical specs are imminent. I know some reviewers already have them. And there are some details sprinkled around the internet. Ill try to compile some of it here.
But i want to be clear. This isnt an exciting new frontier for portable audio. This is a paradigm shifting frontier for ALL audio.
The leap forward with this technology is like horse drawn carriages to electric cars.
The demo I heard was sincerely the best audio reproduction I’ve ever heard.
Im pretty sure Mems iem will be my last iem purchase but ima gonna wait for it to shake out all the niggles that invariably come with new tech…ive made my “early adopter” mistakes and learnt from them
Really good general overview of the technology. Also some info about the tuning of the protype around 15:00. But i can tell you from hearing it, that it sounded like perfect studio neutral.
At 59:27 zeos talks briefly about his experience with mems. Note that he says the guy gives him a dual driver unit to test. That would be the oni prototype. The normal demo set was single driver.
