The 788 desktop from monoprice

Yeah, I don’t think very many audio components have passthrough these days. And generally, those that do - such as AVRs with HDMI - never really power down when you turn them off, unless you hit the hard power switch in the back, and you have to actually setup the passthrough through a menu option. Setting up a passthrough, especially on something that has a tube stage, would require the power switch, or another switch, to bypass the intended circuitry and basically use wires to ā€œshortā€ the audio component out of the circuit path. Outside of AVRs with that HDMI passthrough, equalizers are about the only things I can think of right now where the manufacturer builds in a switch to give you the option to NOT use their product, essentially.

I somewhat feel your pain on those y-cables though. My work desk is essentially spaghetti-like tangle of wires behind my gear. And every time I have to disconnect those y-cables I have to stop and think about how it all goes back together. Now having just typed that I’m wondering why it is I’m a stone’s throw from completing grad school and haven’t figured out labeling or cable management yet. Hmmmm…

Don’t worry, I think most people still haven’t figured it out lol (including myself)

Right? It’s like we all get a new piece of gear and get so excited that instead of being thoughtful about how it all goes together and how we might have to change things later we’re like ā€œMUSIC NOW!!!ā€

Thanks for the education!

I hear you on cable management. I just watched a video on Head-Fi about using zip ties to organize your cable situation. I think it was on the big Schiit thread. It blew me away in its simplicity. When I start narrowing down my hardware choices, I am going zip tie hunting. I will have at least six components to ā€œorganizeā€

  1. SP200 definitely doesn’t have them. It’s why I’m returning mine.

indeedy. fergot it was so well reviewed and that it has pre-outs. wonder what DAC to pair tho… :stuck_out_tongue:

The 788 desktop has a built in balanced dac

looking at the 887…

Ah, but that doesn’t have preouts

pic of the back shows RCA pass-through.

You would have to control the volume through the PC then or have a dac with volume control then, otherwise you would just be sending a line level signal to your powered speakers

pass through =/= preouts.
The 788 actually works as a preout with volume control, but the 887 will work fine as well if you only just want to share the RCA output of your DAC.

does it help that the YU6 have their volume control?

A pass through is exactly what it says it is, it will be the same as plugging them directly into, the DAC.

Well if your powered monitors already have a volume control, then a line in would be preferred

indeed they do.

Yeah, then you would have wanted a line out/pass through the entire time then lol

what would have happened if it was pre-out?

There wouldn’t be anything wrong, but you would have had to use your amp as a volume control rather then the speakers which might be more inconvenient because you would want to unplug your headphones every time you used your speakers
