TH-X00/TR-X00/E-MU Teak/Denon biodynamic general discussion

They’re kind of spotty on responding with the emails. I ordered my Teaks with extra purple heart cups and some spare parts on March 31st and they haven’t shipped. I emailed them and they’re supposed to be shipped sometime this week, the FedEx label was created but hasn’t been processed yet. Even though it’s a long wait the headphones are definitely worth getting. I have the Fostex tr-x00 and the Teaks are a variant of these headphones and they’re definitely my favorite sounds signature.

Thanks. How much did the spare cups cost? How did you request them?

Honestly I feel these are what I really want, but Drop doesn’t seem interested in making another run and I don’t want to buy used.

Should I go ahead and submit the form? Will that get their attention? Should I also pay, or wait for them to contact me first? I wouldn’t mind adding some additional cups to the order.

Ya I would fill out the order. They will contact you and tell you to send the payment via PayPal for $530. Ask them about what ever wood cups you want they are different prices. I have bought the Rosewood, Ebony, and Purpleheart cups. They are $140, if you get the cups with the order then they are $120 they nock off the $20 shipping. They definitely are worth it. The earpads are not comfortable to me since I have big ears. I would recommend getting the ZMF Ori pads or the Lawton angled pads.

If you decide to swap pads, make sure to get or make some attenuation rings. While pads like the ZMF Ori sound good on their own, the rings bring the bass up to about the same as stock.

I ordered, thanks y’all!
Super excited to listen to them.

I do suspect that I will have to change pads.
Probably something deep enough so that my ears don’t touch.
What would be the best choice if I want to keep the same signature?

@A_COC0NUT got any links to the right stuff?

That’s awesome. I have always wanted to hear an E-MU but it seemed easier to just buy a TH610 as they were just about comparable in price (new), and I knew I there would be less concerns on delivery timelines etc. I admire your for taking the plunge.

Do let us know your thoughts on them once they arrive - Congratz!

Disclaimer: I’m going off of memory since I Lawton modded my X00s a few months ago and haven’t used some of these pads in a while. Pluss some of these pads sound good on the stock configuration but DON’T sound good on the Lawton mod, so I can’t test them properly.

So this is a slightly complicated topic. The foster biodyna drivers are pretty heavily dependant on pads. The closet I’ve found to the stock sound are these pads. They have attenuation rings built in and sound very close to stock, but the comfort upgrade is the smallest. The only improvements really are the real leather and memory foam.

The Dekoni X00 sheepskin pads are possibly more comfortable than stock, but only if you have small or medium size ears. They sound pretty damn close to stock while sounding a bit better imo, but require attenuation rings to sound right. They are also a bit expensive and in my experience don’t work the best with the Lawton mod, so if you might do that in the future, these might not be the best option.

Here is my post on how to make attenuation rings btw.

The last pad I can recommend is the ZMF Ori, particularly the hybrid. It’s still lambskin on the inside and outside, so they sound the same as full lambskin, but the face is suede and these are easily fully over ear so they have the best comfort by far. They change the sound the most with less bass and slightly more upper mids and highs but still sound great imo. If you add attenuation rings then the bass is at least equal to stock, just with a bit less upper bass. These also work the best with the Lawton mod imo so you might not have to try any other pads if you decide to go there.

Hopefully some time in the next week I’ll get the Ori cowhide and Eikon hybrid pads and I’ll let you know how they sound. I might even go back to my stock PH cups and see how they fair as well.

Modified my d2000s today to allow for wood cups, using the emu bamboo for now, didn’t want to use Lawton cups yet otherwise I won’t want to listen to the emu ones :joy:

What you prefer?Lawton or Emu Cups?

Maybe you need a second Denon ,.HAve fun with it ,

So far I still find the purpleheart Lawton cups to be much nicer, but the bamboo cups are definitely very nice.

This is my second foster driver headphone, currently my favourite headphones are my Lawton emus, these d2000s are very nice though considering they are the cheapest foster headphone.

They have exactly the same driver as the D5000, apart from the cable and the cups. Once you supply your own cable and swap wood cups on them (D5000 uses Mahogany) you basically have a D5000 there

It’s gonna be a real nice end product I hope

Right now Amazon has the TH610 for $650 + tax, so the Teaks seemed like a good deal. I can find them for $600 elsewhere, but still.

Eh, I can handle the wait, something to look forward to! Hopefully it won’t be more than a month?

Will do!

Thanks for all the info.

I will probably wait to see how I feel about the stock pads first. If they annoy me, I’ll have to try a round one. I generally prefer it when my ears don’t touch anything, but I haven’t tried these before, you never know.

I just got notification that they were handed over to FedEx so it’s been about 3 weeks for me, I take about 4 days to get delivered after that. hopefully you won’t have to wait that long. When I ordered ear cups in the past two different times it only took a week or two. I definitely recommend starting off with the Zmf Ori pads super comfortable and great sound. I am still trying to figure out what I think about the Lawton pads.

They still haven’t even responded to my payment, or my follow-up email.
I hope it’s on their radar :stuck_out_tongue:

Give it a day or two now that you’ve paid. If you still don’t hear back then email again.

I’m almost glad it’s kind of hard to buy from E-MU, otherwise I probably would have bought a set to put my purple heart cups on. LoL

Since I’m currently using the Elegia exclusively for a week I’ll just post some initial impressions on comfort and fit for the Eikon hybrid and Ori cowhide pads.

The Eikon are very comfortable. They have all the benefits of the Ori hybrids but seem to have softer suede and leather (maybe because it’s brand new). They fit over the ear about the same, just a bit more shallow. They also have a greater diameter so there is more surface are.

Eikon hybrid (left) and Ori hybrid (right)

In terms of fit, they are a bit loose, but I don’t think it will be a problem under normal usage.

The Ori cowhide are pretty much identical to my other two Ori pads, just with a stiff cowhide leather. I can’t comment on long term comfort, but they are pretty much just as good as the other two sets.

Fit is identical to the other Ori pads. I really like how the Ori pads fit and look on these Fostex headphones, almost like they the are the stock pads.

I am looking forward to actually trying these as the Eikon pads are reported to sound pretty good and the cowhide is a new material in my pad swapping adventures.

looks good.
Looking forward to reading your sound impressions.

In Germany I found a dealer who sells Zmf headphones as well as pads.
I will consider buying a set when I have read your conclusion

Teak order verified today, YAY!

Expected to ship by the end of next week.
