I keep reading around that it’s the same driver but different tuning and/or different pads. Should such claims be dismissed as fake news?

I pretty often find people saying “don’t get the elex just get the elear with clear pads and save money” and part of me knows it can’t be true and that they’re tripping but I have no empirical evidence.

Well it does have a different tuning and different pads, but I’m pretty sure they have done something to the driver itself, but the basic design is the same

Imo it’s different sounding and the elex is a fair bit better imo, and slapping clear or utopia pads in the elear kinda helps but it doesn’t make it an elex whatsoever. Even putting elex pads on the elear doesn’t yield this result

I see. I wouldn’t be surprised if the differences between the two couldn’t be easily quantified in a frequency graph even though on paper the clear-padded elear looks almost identical. I haven’t personally heard the elear but it seems to be such a divisive pair that I’m apprehensive to think a pad swap magically transforms it into another headphone.

Yeah, personally I don’t know if I would go for this combo, but that’s just me (I think the aeon flow open are pretty meh with some issues that really turn me off from them, and I think you can do better than the hel for a similar price with better headphone amp, dac, and mic in)

Are you sure? I find that with Chinese stuff they write the price up so low that it gets right by the tax collector. At least in Canada.

Anything over £15 and under £130 is subject to VAT. Anything over £130 is subject to VAT and import duty. Linsoul will underdeclare a product for you if you email them but that’s customs/tax fraud and you can end up getting a fine that’s orders of magnitude higher than what you’d potentially save if they decide to inspect it. Not worth it to save £12.
