Beyerdynamic MMX 150 Wireless:
Sound Quality: 8 / 10 For $200 range this headsets sound profile is incredibly well done. I had a blast playing through games like the newer doom and recently roboquest(a game that has a soundtrack from noisecream) and in the case of music I used my rock albums like Metallica Black Album / Master of Puppets, Avenged Sevenfold, and Falling in Reverse feeling this headset would do quite well with that style of music considering it’s tuning.. which does remarkably well. I wouldn’t say this out performs maxwell in terms of sound quality but it’s definitely extremely well done to my ear
Sound Signature: Warmer V-like shape to my ear. spacious for a closed back likely due to the huge pads, zero issues in imaging from my experience(week of testing), good on layering, texture, and detail retrievals
Mic Quality: 8 / 10 I want to give this higher ratings.. it sounds better than pretty much every other headset except astro in terms of clarity, however I subtracted a point because it can pick up a bit of background noise and for some reason Discord likes to fuss with it added a touch of extra compression which is annoying(similar to how it screwed up audeze maxwell actually, so might need an update somehow)
Comfort: 6 / 10 I honestly want to subtract more points from them for continuing to make pad swaps borderline impossible, this continues to use a completely different pad swap adapter that twists on making other beyer designed pads incompatible, between that and the weird pressure points.. not the greatest. Other thing is I feel the pads are honestly just too large.. the inside width is three knuckles all the way around the pads are wider than the cup diameter, because of this the headset can sometimes shift on the head but tends not to due to heavier clamp force. Pads wouldn’t be a big issue if they’d just offer a pad adapter or quit being ridiculous and just use a consistent design. As far as clamp goes I managed to relieved this by stretching it out over the box so I won’t deduct points for that one
Build Quality: 7 / 10 I might be tempted to bring this up to like an 8.5.. they do feel incredibly sturdy.. shouldn’t come as a surprise considering the company behind this product. Everything about this product to even the dials feels very well thought out and solid, I do however wish the volume knob had a stop on it
My take: Seems like high rating huh well.. Admittedly I am rather conflicted on this headset. On one hand this headset is extremely good and I want to give them heavy praise here but on the other hand it comes incredibly lacking in features.. One of which being EQ that is usable outside of a mobile device without needing third party software that isn’t from beyer. Comfort takes a hit on a few points due to some unusual pressure points placed on the head and a couple spots above the ears. Lastly being unfortunately my copy appears defective on the wireless connection sometimes screwing up soundtracks and jumbling up instruments due to what appears to be a weird latency jump which makes me very concerned about overall quality control of these units going forward
Now, Mind you this is the 150.. there is a ‘better’ version that offers much more features such as ANC, Transparency mode, etc which is the MMX 230 at $300 and even uses different pads and an overall design. At $200 provided there isn’t more screw ups with this model like mine has(which I plan to talk with them about) this thing is probably one of the best bangs for the buck headset and it’s really not even close. The downside is for console use in that it’s not compatible with xbox, and since I do not have a playstation I am uncertain whether or not utilizing any form of EQ profile on this thing can be saved and transitioned to the playstation at this current point in time.. considering how heavy the bass is it is a bit much in terms of FPS where it overshadows some of the mids that are bit more important at times. However, overall performance in both casual and competitive is phenomenal. I am sure reviews will come out eventually that will likely touch on playstations performance but so far while this is a brief 1 week review I am very happy with this model
