(update in progress) Falenkor's Competitive Headphone Write Up. Now with added Hardware explanations!

Pretty much this yeah, if looking for the strictly neutral type of sounds I would say Topping over the K7… depending on the topping model of course since some of those lean warm as well

In this regard, I would encourage making a post over in the amps/dacs section of the forums for recommendations towards setups and respective synergies as there are others here with very extensive setups that can most definitely point you in a better direction than I can.

Maybe @Ohmboy can move the last three posts to that section!?

will do thanks

Hi. First time here, would like some advice/
Looking for a good all rounder which would be comfortable to wear for longer hours (home office/gaming/music).
My current setup is a fiio K7, and dt1990 for music/fps + tygr300r for general stuff.
tygr300: Comfortable headband, light BUT my ears are touching the driver/foam and its annoying.
Sound is ok, but lacking compared to 1990.
Would a dekoni pad solve this and make it a good all rounder? or are there better alternatives.
dt1990: like them a lot, especially w A pads, but they are heavy-ish and slightly fatigueing, so can’t wear them for too long, hence the need for a better all rounder.

So looking to upgrade/sidegrade to something which is decent for fps and enjoyable for casual listening to movies/podcasts etc.
Things i tried and did not like for various reasons: 560s, dt900 x.

Currently thinking about:
-880 600ohm as replacement for tygr 300.
-sell dt1990 & tygr300r and get T1 2nd gen. (found one for ~440 euros w moderate use)
-any other sidegrades for tygr maybe?

Any inputs would be appreciated

I can only speak from personal experiences but others may have different takes, but if you don’t want your ears touching the driver/foam you have 2 options: dekoni and ZMF. dekonis will alter the sound to various degrees and for TYGRs your closest to stock options are the Elite Velours and Fenestrated sheepskins while ZMFs are probably as close to stock DT990 silver pads (slightly different bass response to TYGRs black pads) but cost more. Personally, I use ZMFs on my TYGRs but have tried all of the pads mentioned on them.

When you say fatiguing, are you referring to the bright sound or the physical weight of the DT1990s? If its the sound, there are a bunch of solutions that can ameliorate that issue.

Also, can you clarify what you mean by a “good all rounder”?

First thanks for the answer.

I am debating between Elite Velours and dt990 pads, since these are available for me, Dt990 pads would be the cheapest directly form beyerdynamic. But i am not sure if they would be deep enough.

Sort of both, comfort wise they are noticeably heavier and clamp force is stronger than on tygr. Sound wise while i do like them, the highs are a bit fatiguing (but with EQ they are a lot better).

“All rounder” - a headset i could wear for 4-5 hrs + which are pleasant to listen to but not distracting(dt1990 are so detailed that some times i end up losing focus on what i am actually supposed to do). Which are also decent enough for casual gaming (for fps could switch to 1990). The tygr fits the bill, besides the earpad problem.
Wondering if Dt880 600 would be better than tygrs, maybe hd599, or even a T90?

About T1.2 it seems it could be an all in 1 option, since people wrote that they are

  1. better at fps than dt1990
  2. more comfortable than dt1990
  3. less treble? than 1990.

But i am a bit hesitant on using such an expensive headset as a daily since its discontinued and not that easy to maintain.

990 pads will basically be the same as the stock TYGR pads, fine at first but as they break in you’ll end up with the same depth issue.

Elite Velours might be what you are looking for comfort wise and they’re very popular on DT1990s as well. Also the TYGR foam discs (part no. 934208) are nice on DT1990s if you you just want to blunt some of the treble peaks for cheap if beyerdynamic services your country.

I know exactly what you mean. I’ve swapped to TYGRs instead of 1990s during certain games due to losing focus.

Man has it been a WHILE since I chimed in on here huh. Wanted to stop on here for just a minute as I had the opportunity to try a specific couple of newer headsets that came out so I will keep some of these brief but the big one I wanted to chime in on was fractal

MMX 330 Pro: great, not as great as tygr 300r due to pricing but sounds a little less congested and better tuned. Price wise WAY too much but if you want a one and done solution this is extremely solid its a bit quiet on certain controllers didnt have an issue on the ps5 controllers… DID however have issues on some aftermarkets like cyclone 2 from gamesir. Wouldn’t call the mic class leading but its definitely up there. Overall this is a great purchase if you can get a good sale on them… Fits the niche grey area of open backed headsets and is probably the best on the market right now for them

Logitech G522: hoo boy this ones all over the place. Hate the pads weird cloth style, hate the headband. For larger heads the headband is god awful and your better off buying a third party alternative to fix that. Pads thankfully this still uses the same G pad style design so again you can third party some pads. Biggest detriment… these for some reason sound like your listening out of a bucket with holes punched into it the actual presentation is a bit… awful like I got used to it but my goodness do these sound… dreadful. You can EQ alot of the frequency thats all over the place to a good degree to really dial this in however, even for someone like me with a large head and large ears the headset weighs next to nothing and the pads shift around a lot causing a HUGE change in frequencys based on where my head is… and for someone like me with a bigger monitor if I turn my head or anything the pads shift very easily. Mic is superb though. I would say after a swap to both headband and pads followed by an EQ on that sound quality this is worth it BUT ONLY if you can manage to 1. get this on sale or 2. manage to make adjustments that bring the total price to $200… after that I don’t feel this is worth the money period.

Hyper X Cloud III S Wireless: Good, pretty standard and what I would expect from a Hyperx. I wouldn’t pay more than maybe $150 for these they are priced at $180 which is I think decent. Comfort is only okay… if you have large ears it still can be pad swapped. Sound signature is pretty pleasing on this one bit enclosed on the soundstage… this is a well placed slightly above the average expectations for a wireless gaming headset. One of the issues I have though is for glasses since it seals a little odd this seems to lose a lot of bass quality and impact the moment you have glasses on which is very unfortunate

Steel Series Arctis Nova Wireless 3x / 3p: first off holy hell thats a long name but in all seriousness this isn’t bad… at all im actually a bit shocked here. It’s only around $100 has the pretty standard comfort you get from steel but an improved mic that is on par or better than headsets double or more the price. Has plenty to offer from its software… I think this might be what id classify as one of the best budget kings of wireless gaming right now this things solid all around… kudos to steel on that… oh and, 5 wireless is a slight step up for $10 if you want some extra game add ons… but not necessary. Something to note: yes I would say this is better than nova pro wireless… that headset is very dated these days and while yes sound quality may be a touch better on them its negligible enough for me to say this is worth far more

Razer Blackshark V3 Pro: hoo boy this one… let me save you the trouble. TLDR don’t just dont. Same scratchy material, worse mic than the previous model, sound quality is still poor mans headphone. Save yourself the headache. Wait on a revision or some more firmware cause this thing is currently a disaster even POST the “microphone firmware” they added. It sounds better than the V2 pro but almost nothing else really changed if anything it became worse. V2 pro 2023 is on sale currently and expected to drop in price making this almost $100 more expensive… its as of writing this not worth that period

Fractal Scape: I really… wanted to love these and I know resolve just put out a post on these as well but I stand by my choice that while this is a great start its just… a no for me until some changes can be made. At $200 this ones in a spot where it competes with practically every single headset on the market. With that you have a headband that has extremely minimal padding to the point that on a larger head this creates some hot spots and after a bit of time its very noticeably uncomfortable for me to wear, Add this on top of the weird clamp force I get where it places a lot of pressure behind my ears along the jaw line and it just becomes even worse… however at the very least this changes upon stretching the band out a little so recommendation is just stretch it out over a box or something for a day. I think the worst case though is the fact of the material that’s in use here… I can’t place my finger on exactly the material outside of just cloth but this feels like the same material I find in my admittedly quite scratchy Secret Lab chair and is likely the same material used on their gaming chair the Refine. It’s decent but very scratchy and if my ears move at all with this one I definitely notice it very quickly that this material is very scratchy and bothersome. This on top of the fact its scratchy enough for me to hear the swish of it on my skin while im listening makes it even further bothersome.

Lets move into the mic quality here… I will keep this short… its bad plain and simple. I know what everyone will say oh well gaming headset mics especially wireless are notoriously bad. Well this is bad to the point that it barely if at all competes with cheaper headsets… for example Nova 3x or G522 have a better sounding mic with more clarity and nova is half the cost of this… and in the price pool you also have something like mmx200 or razer blackshark v2 2023… again which still sound a bit better. That doesn’t mean the mic isn’t usable by any stretch there is definitely worse mics but this mic is by no means ‘competing’ in its price tag so I find this unacceptable for a gaming headset… not only is the comfort an enormous hit or miss but now the mic quality isn’t up to par to its competition I would argue that makes this a very hard sell. Again you can use this mic as the quality is slightly better than Hyperx III S wireless so it’s definitely ‘okay’ just not class leading by any metric. It removes a lot of clarity, adds quite a bit of congestion/compression, and for my voice it removes a lot of bass while having a bit of a strange hot mic depending on where its placed in terms of sensitivity

Lets get a bit into wireless cause that ties into the mic as well. The headphone portion itself can go remarkably far… several rooms infact without losing sound but I had an immediate issue after around 12 feet testing the mic where the mic started to break up and artifact sounding exceedingly worse… this makes it a bit difficult to walk around and talk

Lastly, Sound… this one will always be subjective but I don’t find the tuning all that enjoyable. I find this overly bassy and the treble a bit to peaked for my liking. You can definitely use the parametric to dial this in however, I had exceedingly large problems in fps games because the soundstage is relatively small and there isn’t very good separation or layering here while yes we can argue oh it depends on the game engine… this was fairly consistent across games where I had issues placing sounds when a lot was going on… Grenade explosions would override footsteps almost entirely for example.

Overall, I think the signature behind the fractal is a very solid one but its awful for competitive FPS games in my opinion compared to the competition. I think the aesthetics here are absolutely stunning but that’s all this headset really has going for it within the $200 price bracket. I would argue this is a $150 headset tops and that it is overpriced currently until changes are made. It is a very mid tier headset with it exceeding in practically zero categories other than aesthetic and a good driver everything else needs some form of tweaking to really dial in for use. This headset performs very well in casual games however, thats already a very low bar outside of immersion. If I had to give this headset a rating… I want to honestly give it a split rating here. For larger heads like mine? 4/10 for smaller heads I would say probably around a 6/10 I might bring both of those up by 1 point simply because wireless options are so small in offerings but that’s no excuse for the issues when others already have done this better and set an example

Hopefully fractal doesn’t hate me for that one. I love their products. I will say if a revision happens or maybe you can pick up a scape( highly likely at this rate ) for like $100-$150 I would snag that in a heartbeat especially if more pads get created. However, when asking other pad companies about creating pads some of them are on record stating that they feel the Scape is too ‘niche’ and won’t be creating pads for it.
