(update in progress) Falenkor's Competitive Headphone Write Up. Now with added Hardware explanations!

I believe the g6 has only optical ports and it’s usb power cable port(also the pc connection port)… looked yeah you’d need an optical cable for that setup. I do believe an rca to optical may work in that regard from the atom

back of the g6

the atom only has rca’s in the back and it’s 3.5mm as well as the power cable. That would be a question to ask one of hte others for absolute verification on for sure as I don’t have that unit in house to test that personally.

However, if your tending the idea of the G6 and are only using the DT 1990 you can be just fine with using only the g6 as it’s a combo unit and will save you money… it does power up to 600 ohms so 250 ohm 1990 is no problem for it whatsoever and it doesn’t sound bad… it is one of the best of the gaming dacs after all. Now if you were using a really needy planar like an argon or something… may be some issues but g6 is quite strong especially as an entry unit for the gamer. G6’s alternative is the X3 if you want to look into that as well

Thanks once more.

I have an optical cable here.

Now looking into the x3 vs the g6. Seems sound quality is better with the G6
I bought the G6 for less than 100 EUR

If you plan to use an atom itd have to be optical terminating to rca… pretty much an adapter cable.

Sounds good

@Falenkor I have my sights set on a sub-$300 T1 1st gen. and a sub-$700 HD800. I feel like the T1, if it stays at that price is a deal that can’t be refused. Any other cans I should look out for? Would a 1990, TYGR, K712 Pro, or anything else be better as a dedicated gaming can in that price bracket? Thoughts on if paying more for the HD800 is worth it? It would be my main can until I can afford a TH900 or something, then a dedicated gaming can.

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice you have given me. I ended up getting the dt990 with the liquid spark amp and still waiting on the d10 dac. I have the amp going thru my fulla 3 till the dac arrives so don’t know how much if any it will improve the quality.

Only used this set up for a few hours and I’m liking it thus far. The fit and comfort is awesome the only thing i can kinda complain about is the head pad its a little firm but not uncomfortable. The imaging feels really good a few steps up from the ad700x. I haven’t really noticed the treble fatigue like mentioned so that’s good.

Is the position of the amp knob a preference or is there a good place for it to be and just use my pc for the volume? Right now I have the fulla knob maxed and my pc maxed and I have just been using the amp to raise and lower the volume.

Should I try any equalizer settings on my pc or just leave them off I know this might be preference? Just wondering if there is any thing that would make an improvement.

Can’t wait to get the dac I just ordered from the cheapest place and didn’t know it was shipping from china :frowning: but oh well.

Thanks again bro you been a big help.

Avoid regular hd800 the s version is alot better. Go with the first gen t1 granted I will warn that ones a diff signature than my own 2nd gen and is quite bright… I hope you too tolerate such brightness otherwise you will want some pads and eq to help adjust that

For competitive t1 is phenomenal but I really prefer the 2nd gen as it is more balanced out smoother and more bass… 1990 is the alternative to the t1. Tygr is the warm alternative for cheap if your treble sensitive. If your going for the beyers you can definitely skip k712

It will but rather slightly…

Your welcome glad I could help

When you use an amp you should max the pc and use the amp as your volume knob theres a good reason for this but I’m on my phone and would rather keep this relatively short. Feel free to ask the others on that if you want.

Wont hurt as long as you have the power to do so… eq takes more amp

Okay great! Apparently theres a cheap and easy mod to make HD800 sound super close to the S version, but it is super expensive. I also just saw the TH909 on sale here, which might fulfull both my gaming and EDM listening needs…

Not something for competitive honestly considering it’s a fostex which usually are bassy headphones but good for music and casual

Gotcha, also have you heard the HD700 or know the general consensus on it? Or Koss/Stax electrostats? So far, my options are HD700/T1 in the $300 range, HD800 and L300 Limited in the $700 range. Then just determining if the step up is worth it. I also have seen a AD2000X for around $400, what do you think of those, HD700, and stats for imaging and soundstage?

Never tried it… heard it was pretty bad. Have tried hd800s.

Have not bothered with electrostats and they generally cost quite alot as you need an Energizer for them as well.

Not sure if your thinking that just because they are higher priced they must be better when this is very far from the truth… in terms of imaging and soundstage most of those except maybe the electro have a rather large soundstage but they still lose to hd800s and others very well know for their massive staging. Ad2000x isn’t real big on staging lacks alot in the bass a little in the clarity and treble but imaging is quite nice it seems more mid focused… hd700 and 800/s are either bad or a one trick pony being incredibly bright but biggest redeeming feature is soundstage and mids

Headphones past the 500 margin are generally for music… gaming has its limits less it’s like bass cannon casual but that’s pretty easy since that’s fostex territory

Please also keep in mind that with such an expensive headphone comes expensive purchases of amps and dac you can’t just grab an hd800 and expect it to run and sound properly off say a liquid spark. Your amp and dac at that point should be around $500 per unit or more bringing the total setup close to $2000 otherwise it’s rather pointless as the headphone wont sound it’s best in that regard

It’s a journey not a race and even in terms of gaming there is no jumping to some kind of finish line

Sounds like I might have a better time if I can steal that T1 for $300 or below, and maybe throw a tube at it to warm it up. Or try the AD2000X since I can be treble sensitive and I haven’t tried a mid-forward headphone.

Ad2000x is alright for music… not really a big fan.

Treble sensitivity + 1990, t1, or hd800 do not mix like at all as they all are very bright. You’d want to look for a warm or rather neutral headphone in that case.

Also for @matziti_D. I used the G6 with an Atom amp for a while. The G6 comes with an optical to 3.5mm cable to connect the two.

oh well there you go, thanks for clarification on that

Hey thanks @tglodjo and @Falenkor , ordered a cable for it ( only € 5).

You like the setup ?

Any of you guys have experience with dekoni pads? Looks like they max out the comfort and potential of the Dt 1990

hmm? yeah, I have all the styles for my beyers work just fine granted not all the pad styles are great for certain headphones… such as I wouldn’t recommend the sheepskins for the 1990. Suede and velour are real nice though… choice leather and hybrid are also nice for it.

had a couple people ask me whats my gaming setup… so my monitor and stuff is listed up there but I get asked what headphones do I rely on the most… that’s a pretty easy one but I figured I would list it here and it’s not a beyer(shocking I know)

I rely on the Aeon Open-X from drop for my regular daily driver… it’s neutral harman tuning just sits perfectly with me and plugged into the liquid platinum just really opens it up.

Try-Hard strictly Competitive I rely on my Beyerdynamic T1 2nd generation because the analytically bright nature of the 1990 just gets obnoxious after a while and I prefer a more relaxed smoother sound with naturally more bass impact and a little more in the mids.

heavy immersion Casual I rely on either my Audeze LCD-2 or Nighthawk Carbons. Dark bassy headphones are great since my game interests tend to dwell into horrors and other sorts of games I could go with the Tygrs for sure but the recession to the mids just don’t sit right with me when i have the hawks

Music: just depends on the genres… I have the clears in house now so I tend to listen to them for a lot of my music since they are just too good and the overall sound quality especially in the mids and smooth highs is fantastic granted I do bump the bass by a good amount it’s just to get a bit more impact out of it

as for gaming peripherals… I use either a Scuf or Astro C40 controller, Ducky keyboards(going to build my own soon), glorious model D mouse it just fits my hand better than O for how I use them, and a Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor, next to the Klipsch 2.1 promedia speaker system(to be upgraded)

So I’ve got the T1 in my sights and a Bifrost/Valhalla stack, which hopefully retain the imaging ang enough detail. There doesn’t seem to be a conclusion yet on the Dekoni pads, do you have any insights?

I do, yes. Depends what sound signature are you looking for? if its 1st gen, any of the thicker pads will work quite well in my opinion since it’s more much neutral bright than the 2nd gen so adding bass goes well. I would give the award for comfortable listening on that one to the Suedes probably hands down

Yes it’s a 1st gen, so then fenestrated sheepskin? Or the suedes or leathers for bass
