Your asking me for a definitive choice when it’s based on your preferences. I cannot answer that one for you.
Soo I will be using them for movies with dolby atmos for headphones, games wise I like explosions and the soundtrack in video games and dialogues as well. For reference I use Sony wh-1000xm4 and I like it. Just wanna get soenthing even better
that’s a noise cancelling isolating headphone which would be better if you want complete isolation when your watching or playing. If you don’t need those… any of the options would work fine. Argons are a pain in the ass to obtain especially right now and generaly you would be waiting over 2 months to get one if ordered, Nighthawks are a toss of a coin to find at the right price or in great condition, x2hr is only worth it if you can snag it around $90
Alright I guess I will go with argon. Thanks for the all queries. I just like discussing headphones and music with other people and get their views
You recommended the topping d10 but im not seeing anywhere to buy. All I’m seeing is the 10ds it how does that differ? You also mentioned the spark dac how does that compare with the d10?
it’s just the updated variant. Better performance and what not. I actually forgot to write down to change that on here on the update… so I appreciate you pointing that out. Will be fixed in the update
not in house, can’t really make a call on that… I believe rice got one of these and made a remark when I asked him to compare the D10 to the new spark dac… considering it
generally dacs in the $100 range will have very marginal changes to sound to the point of barily noticing differences to begin with… it isn’t till you get way up in high price brackets that the dac makes a very noticeable change. Then again comparing a regular $100 dac to your onboard does show sound results as well
Hello! I am looking for a set of all-arounder open back headphones for under $250.
I would like them to perform well in game, but also be enjoyable for listening to music and watching streams. I mainly play fps (Escape from Tarkov and Siege). I don’t have enough experience with different headphones to be sure what sound signature I prefer, but I am migraine prone so piercing treble and booming bass seem awful to me in theory.
I will be plugging them into a MOTU M2 btw.
Hey there welcome to hifiguides and thank you for reaching out. At $250 without an appropriate amp will be a little bit difficult as the Motu M2 really isn’t that great as a headphone amp. Are you using the motu for a dedicated microphone as well? would suggest a proper dedicated amp at some point down the road and you can just use the m2 as your dac and microphone port.
As for being migraine prone and booming bass, in competitive your really not wanting booming bass to begin with so that shouldn’t be an issue for you but the treble has me a bit concerned. You should be alright with something such as the Sennheiser 58X Jubilee as it’s neutral in signature with jack of all trades aspects… doesn’t really fall short anywhere. Tygr 300R may work for you respectively and be your potential best bet considering it’s not a very amp picky headphone and is more on the warm side of the signatures therefore should work for you… I won’t bother recommending any closed backs and centered sound of such I feel may exacerbate your migraines. 300R should be on sale right now for around $169 from beyer I would recommend start there… they have a return policy in the event it doesnt work for you, it works perfectly fine in tarkov and siege while sounding good for regular listening unless your a vocal lover due to the mids being a little on the recessive side.
Both headphones recommended should account for any potential issues and are more well rounded with tygr being the best option and 58x jubilee being the safest option. Both can be ran technically ampless to account for using such a weak amplifier and both are around $150-$170(tygrs usually $200 though) which should be able to account for you able to get a respective amp in that budget if you shop around. Recommended grabbing an Amp off the markets(used or on sale if you can find it). JDS Atom, Schiit Magni 3+, Schiit Heresy, Monoprice Liquid Spark. Any of the amps listed can be found for around $70 despite being $100 new which should work with your budget just fine.
Please make use of your used dealers as you can find many pieces of sound equipment for cheaper in mint conditions. Use paypal and request them to send you an invoice if going through third party, always ask for a photo showing the condition of the item, anything wrong with it, and have them make a placard of their username plus the date and time placed in the photo.
Sites that can help you shop are Adorama, Reverb, USA Audio Mart, Audiogon, Here on hifiguides on the buy/sell thread, R/avexchange on reddit, Head-fi purchasing threads, amazon, ebay, alternative stores, and lastly you can use Hifishark to dig around multiple sites at once to pinpoint a good deal for you
phew, been a lot of questions today I assume from sales time. Will check back in later in the day, need some rest and gotta do some shopping myself as well. I should theoretically have most of this updated by… I want to say Tuesday, may procrastinate it a bit though.
again, if anyone has questions for me, wants me to check out some gear, or think something would be good to add to this write up feel free to leave a message on here or directly message me.
Hello, I’ve been lurking here and there for quite some time, but I finally decided to register just to tell you how much I appreciate all the work you do here with this thread, always helpful with your suggestions for everyone.
Looking forward for the update
Cheers
A week on just wanted to say I love the Tygrs, far more than my K712s even. Far more accurate, I can pinpoint player positions so much easier, distancing is easier too. Playing bloodhound is like cheating in Apex Legends, I hear steps so quick, can scan for their location, almost feels dirty. They are also great for music and streams/media. Really had fun watching films with them and metal really works well through them. I think I must like warm headphones. Thanks for recommending them, they are keepers for sure.
Also have 2 weeks with the 1990s, I can see why you kept mentioning them outside of being Beyerns in your review. They feel similar in imaging, but not quite there and didn’t make me feel like it was too much to listen to. Its like the Tygrs are clear quartz and 1990s are diamond. Both clear, but diamond has that extra shine and clarity.
Thank you so much for chiming in just to show some kind words I really appreciate it!
of course man, I am very happy you find so much enjoyment in them and I agree that they are rather crazy accurate for being so good in so many areas.
yeah, tygr has better imaging to my ear but 1990 has that quality of sound and none of the recessions. It’s like a big step up in overall sound qualities at the same time, not necessary and complete overkill lol. I use the 1990s myself from time to time but more often I use the T1.2 due to it’s more relaxed nature…
Hope you continue to enjoy those man, I think it will be a while before something kicks tygr off that pedestal for gamers
Some news update on the potential update… I am reaching out to wave for some helpful advice on how to go about properly structuring this as I am running into some character limits but I also need to make sure to sit down with multiple headphones again and reassess them, it’s time consuming put lightly.
At the same time, I am waiting to finish the modifications to the DT 990 since I am adding a rating to each of these headphones I feel is good and considering where the 990 stands in competitive gaming I definitely want to make sure I got this in order. Also, waiting on the Penrose that will be added to this. Others to be added are R70x, Deva, ad1000x, maybe the zeus not sure on that one yet, pc38x, other beyers I feel are worth mentioning, among a large amount of others
I may postpone the update to at least two more weeks so I can make absolutely sure I got the information I need, I am not one to sit there and gush or shill products… I receive zero compensations for this write up and all products are either trialed personally through friend, a shop, or using my own hard earned money
After trying Grado sr60e for 30 minutes. I’m blessed. Hopefully that 58X has the same sound characteristic.
I wouldn’t say as much no… 58x is more neutral
Hello,
I am a long time FPS player, used to be high level 10/15 years ago, but never professional level. Just lans, some money and hardware.
Now I play from time to time csgo/tf2 but I spend most time in games like Heroes&Generals (free game with awful sound :D), Hell let Loose and other games with a lot of sounds ( not just with 5 vs 5).
I used Beyerdynamic MMX 300 (closed back - for lans).
RecentIy bought the Dt 1990 and it sounds good. I still use an old astro mixamp tr with some eq settings. I actually prefer the B-pads over the A-pads in the last games mentionned.
I want to reach most of the potential of the headphone.
I ordered an USB mod mic and atom amp. Could I use the astro mixamp as a dac or do I need to get something else? I like to have the possibility to change eq settings on the go. Never used the VSS. Prefer something I can order from the EU.
What do you recommend?
I don’t believe the mixamp can be used as a dedicated dac thinking of the plugs… It doesn’t have any RCA or balanced plugs. At the same time, it’s quite the awful unit as the dac is very sub par and the amp is extremely weak. I would just recommend getting a dac at that point. one of the many dacs will work just fine… Atom dac, spark dac, modi dac, D10 dac. As for EQ settings on the go, kind of out of luck with that one as most units are not going to have that. You’d either need a preamp of some sort with some equalizer buttons on it, an actual equalizer unit such as a Schiit Loki, or if your on pc you can make use of Peace APO but this requires some tinkering though it is free
Thanks for your reply. Time to ditch this astro.
I also came across the G6- GSX1000 - Mayflower Electronics ARC mk2 by browsing more sites. Any idea’s about this? I prefer something easy to order within the EU.
Regards
That’s an immediate NO from me llol. Overpriced hot garbage, only good for it’s 7.1, barily powers up to 150 ohms, and the dac is only decent yet it’s priced at the same value as a good dedicated setup.
you mean soundblaster? This will work for consoles and pc as well as power up to 600 ohms… this is my general recommendation for those who want a combo unit and still play on the consoles. Granted Atom is stronger, the g6 still has a good dac in it so I would say it’s a nice option more so if you want the added buttons it offers.
hmm, you seem to be trying to get something with a mic port? Why is that? Mayflower is good as a gaming dac/amp but you stand to gain more benefit from a dedicated setup. You do pay quite a bit for that added mic input. It’s not a bad amp… it’s just too expensive for what it is in my opinion. The Mk2 mayflower is $270 not including shipping and taxes which is higher than entry level… granted mayflower isn’t a push over when it comes to power and good sound, I just personally think(again my opinion) you stand to gain more out of a respective dedicated setup
since I am not from the EU it will make things hard for me to help you figure out a good solution but I will do what I can
Ok,
Again thanks for the advice.
so if I’m right I can get the atom amp to work with Soundblaster G6. I still find it useful to fiddle with the presets and I saw here there is some useful software
