What are your favorite/best sounding on ears?

For the time I have been on this hobby it seems to me that most people hate on ears, but me, I LOVE ON EARS. I can never get a good fit with closed backs because I have huge ears paired with glasses, also I like clampy cans so on ears just feel so right for me and provide better isolation (if closed), but the sound has been on the lower tiers so far. It’s time to add some to my collection.

What on ears would you recommend me for the sound? open or closed, any price.

The ones I have are porta pros with yaxis and ath-ar3bt, which I love both. I haven’t heard grados, sony or anything else for that matter.

I - no joke - really like my Pro4AAs. Technically on ears (see Zeo’s rant). No lie there. :^)

Okay, more serious: I do prefer the KPH30i over the Porta Pro slightly. Very similar sound but with a much more comfortable (yet less portable) design. Most people complain about ear-pressure (very real), but I don’t mind it at all. I mean, everything feels like heaven compared to the Pro4AA…

All the Koss 60 ohms are really all I’ve tried since they are dirt cheap, but some others I would like to try one day:
Koss SP330
Sennheiser HD25-1 II
Grado SR60e

Think I would like the Grados quite a bit. At least from what I can hear, the Pro4AA has pretty similar spikiness to how the SR60e measures according to RTINGS, but with flatter bass response and possibly less treble in the non-spiky areas.

Hello,
Well it goes.
Grado I had last week on the ears and felt right.
Purely from the sound you were in the mids and highs really strong, what was missing was bass.
If there again nachgelegt I would even still interested.
Fortunately, I followed the advice of a Grado first test before you buy it.

What mkr also noticed was that he is quite picky about the headphone amplifier.
At Music fidelity Hx Hpa great stage and all but overall Thin.
On a tube amp from Mcintosh he was quite good.even in the bass he has increased again.
And sounded resumiert considered the most correct.
Would aufjedenfall interesting to tube amplifier.

More like the Koss and Stax still falls mkr also not one for on ears.

Im already considering the kph30i, thats what happens with koss you start with one and end up like you, ill try to hold it until I break my portas which im already halfway there lol, ill look at the pro4AA after.

Judging the reviews im more on the wanting for sr80, but wanna know if there are better options before trying grado.

Again from the reviews I think the hd25 would be meh for the cost, I really want to try the ath-m60x, I wanna be that other guy besides zeos that loves them :frowning: both have disheartening reviews.

Well due to the fact that I am still using these over my other headphones that I have, and now my IEMs took a massive dive when it comes to usage as well and I blame myself for buying it. Goddamn modded Koss KSC75s are just fucking good imo, and I hate that I was late into that freaking game of getting one.

This is also coming from a guy who prefers over-ears than on-ears, and these pricks changed my mind about them. Just get some Yaxi pads on these, get an Parts Express headband to replace the ear clips (or not if you prefer ear clips.) and MMCX/2 pin mods these magnificent bastards, Voila! imo Endgame and these ruined me.

I’d suggest Sennheiser HD25-1 II
These were my first good set of headphones about 15 years ago, still use them today as my out and about headphones, as well as monitoring/tracking, they are just small enough to shove in a bag and cut out a decent bit of outside noise. Everything is user replaceable and they can take alot of punishment.
They are U-shaped, but without the typical beyer treble spikes, very easy to listen to and non-fatiguing.

Thats nice to hear, currently im looking at those and the m60x, would you mind comparing the sound to any other sennheiser or ath? looking at the response chart it seems that these are the bassiest sennheiser ever, which is something i’d dig.

I’ve tried the M50x alright, they say the M60x is based on the M50 sound.
Compared to the HD25 they are more neutral and maybe a bit more detail, but they sounded a bit lifeless to me,. If you like bass try the HD25s for sure.
The rest of my headphone experience is with Beyers 1990 / 770, AKG K712pro, Grado SR325. Compared to those they are like 770s with a smoother overall sound, but a little bit less detail.

Hope that helps somewhat, im sure someone else here has some experience with the HD25 and other senns / Audio technica.

Thanks man, that actually helps, i feel the same way about the m50x, detailed for the price but sound dead. I heard the 770 (80ohm) and its like a knife to me. I don’t prefer bassy, thats why I don’t own bassy headphones and I need one for edm, now the hd 25 have my interest. My only concern is that I live with the fear that sennheiser updates it and I end up with an inferior version.

I think the m60x form factor should fix all the m50x issues, my theory is that their lack of life comes from the steeply angled drivers and bad acoustic design, I’ve always tought if the imaging was not a mess they’d be amazing, and zeos praises the m60x imaging.

Honestly don’t recommend it. If you want to for shits and giggles, sure. I’m used to the fitment now, but it was - in the first several days - not just uncomfortable but also painful to wear for more than 10 minutes.

Tonaly a bit peculiar by todays standards as well; probably is polarizing like Grados. They do sound great with a lot older recordings and actually aren’t too bad with modern electronic stuff either. Problem is the treble spikes really hurt if the music coincidentally has a lot of emphasis at 3khz or 8khz. Poor resolution/texture too, but surprisingly good seperation and detail retrieval.

oh, thanks for clarifiying. Knowing that i’ll ignore them.

I just pulled the trigger on the sennheiser hd25, they arrive on sunday. The bad reviews I had in mind were from when these costed 200+, I just hope the clamp doesn’t kill me, also I have the option to return them.

This is my last adquisition of the year, I’ll keep collecting on ears next year, so this post is still pretty much open.

I have Koss PortaPro.

Sennheiser PX-100-II and HD-25’s are also not bad.

That is all my experience with on-ears.

The hd 25 are amazing! Fun, dark and warm, colored. The bass is fast, present mids, rolled off treble. This is definitively a porta pro upgrade in a bass direction. If you dont mind on ears no problem with the fit, they got very comfortable for me after a brief headband stretch.

Id be very impressed to find a better set, I dont know if sr80 or m60x could beat this.

I Love my Grado’s. I have the GH2’s and they sound amazing, although a bit bass light.

I used to have the SR325e’s. I liked the sound, but found them a bit bright.

Grado’s are great out of a phone or DAP, but do scale with some nice gear. I also do EQ a bit to add some bass.

I like the Alessandro Ms-1 more than the lower range Grados (I.e., SR60 or SR80); not sure about the rest of the SR series… I love my Grados but those are RS series or special editions.

Bass… well, gaming bass maybe (clueless really), or some classical Organ, or certain kinds of electronic, really needs super low bass. More than what you’re likely to get with Grados.

For most classical, jazz, or rock, however, I think the Grados generally do well and get a bad rap. (Also, flat pads if your model can stand them, give more bass).

EDIT — of course you’ll notice Grados are divisive. Here and across all forums I think. One of those things you just have to try before you know how you will get on with them.
