I wouldn’t really say so. There is the 5khz dip, but it has less impact than I expected - I heard it described as reducing detail and clarity, but I wouldn’t go as far. I noticed it in some tracks where this area of treble should have more presence than it does but that’s in very specific songs I know well. But those specific songs did sound less impressive than I know they can.

And it’s not like there’s no energy in the treble past that point, or that the frequency until then is sloped - in fact it’s very flat until 1.5khz. I’ve also read that due to physical design of the headphones and the angled drivers the 3khz dip is less noticeable in reality than in graphs, and I would say I believe that.

Now, obviously it’s not a bright headphone, or v-shaped - but I’d say the 5khz dip doesn’t make it dark, just neutral with a dip. But maybe that’s enough for people to consider it dark.

Biggest reason I bought this pair was that I wanted something to match my speakers for when I can’t listen out loud, and other than the soundstage and the few types of songs I mentioned earlier it does the job perfectly well.

Neutral is hard to define for Audeze apparently. I actually say they are more bright and treble forward than neutral…a stark departure from the Audeze house sound.

They also are way heavier than the LCD-2 or LCD-3 and listening to them has just been a cumbersome experience for me. They just arent for me unfortunately. No redeeming qualities for my preferences and my currently owned headphones can do what the LCD-x can, but better.

Appreciate the review.

I’m interested to explore the Audeze line, but they have so many uber-expensive models that I really have no idea what the right jumping-in point ought to be. I picked up an LCD-GX to evaluate for gaming, but I really have no good reference for ā€œAudeze house soundā€ (I showed up to the party too late, lol). I do hear a lot about planar bass / slam, but not sure if that’s a 2C thing?

Anyway, I’m probably content to let the mystery persist until I get to spend some time with their cans at a future CANJAM or RMAF. In the meantime, it helps to gather impressions like yours to help orient myself ahead of my own listening experiences, whenever those may be.

Sorry to hear about the LCD-X being a let down. I’ve been there lol.
After hearing that, I’m taking the LCD-X off my consideration list. You’re not the only person I’ve seen compare the LCD-X unfavorably to the Clear. I guess I’ll go with the LCD-2 as my first Audeze since it should be pretty distinct from the rest of my collection.

Yeah, the weight of those suck. In my experience, Audeze’s comfort strap distributes the weight well, but one would most likely start feeling the strain after an hour or so. So, it looks like the LCD-X is a no-go for me. Then again, I don’t really mind since the LCD-X was never on my radar.

Back to your LCD-X’s. Did you try using Audeze’s Reveal VST Plugin? It seems to add a bass shelf at 100Hz according to Resolve over at headphones.com, which might help with your roll-off. Then again, Audeze’s VST plugin crashes my music player of choice (Musicbee) whereas other VST plugins (mostly tube pre-amp plugins I’m toying around with) work fine. I’m definitely not going to search for another music player after setting up Musicbee (e.g. virtualtags, custom fields, etc.) to handle my well-tagged library just to use Audeze’s plugin. They should publish the EQ settings for it, so I plug those values into Peace, an EquilizerAPO frontend.

So, hindsight being 20/20, do you wish you had kept the LCD2 C’s?
Or do you feel you had just ā€œoutgrownā€ them?

I don’t use EQ. Nothing against those who do.

I normally just sell a pair of headphones if I dont care for them and buy something new.

I have no regrets selling my LCD-2C as it was a good headphone and served me well for the time that I had owned them. It was time to move forward and upward further into the next tier for me

The LCD-x are still an upgrade from the LCD-2C for most people. But for me, given my own preferences and what I currently own, the LCD-x provide no added value. The one thing I liked about the LCD-X is that it doesn’t have the shouty sounding peak in the 1 to 2 khz mids region like the LCD-2C. It had nice transition from the mids into the treble, but I definitely wasn’t prepared for an Audeze to have that aggressive and forward sounding treble.

IIRC, you also had the DT880 for awhile, yes? Did the LCD-X’s treble come across as sharper and more forward than the 880’s? I know those 2 headphones are not in the same class at all. The LCD-X is on my ā€œmaybe somedayā€ list. But if it’s more treble hot than the 880 it won’t work for me either.

It’s hard to say really because they both have different sound signatures. The LCD-X without question has the least amount of treble comparatively. The DT880 also start to encounter bass roll-off around 80 Hz, but still fully extends into the sub bass, albeit at a lower volume. The LCD-X being an Audeze planar, I didn’t expect the bass to start rolling off around 40 Hz. Sure, it extends to the sub bass as well, but also at lower volumes than I prefer. Because of the roll off and the upper mid dip in the LCD-X, it makes the treble more annoying and because it elevates into the Air frequency range above 10 Khz, it tends to overshadow the bass and mids all together. Not in a fatiguing way, but in an annoying way where the treble would say ā€œhey fucker, I heard you like bass and mids. it would be a shame if I happened to be just loud enough to ruin them for you.ā€ LOL

so I ended up cancelling my elex order and instead purchased a k240 sextet and a bottlehead crack +speedball… ive had my eye on these two items for awhile and the bhc especially makes sense because it should serve me well with future purchases I intend to make… feeling better about this than waiting until august for the elex to save $100… it’ll be sweet having a k240 in the collection again too
