What do you have to buy to get better than the Massdrop cans?

I owned a 6 screw he6 and the 6se is closer to that than the older 4 screw he6. Some prefer the 4 screw because it’s more technically proficient but I like the 6 screw and 6se since it’s the more fun to listen to headphone for me

Also my hardware eq’s (only eq) are tube based so I don’t have a solid state eq besides software (ish it’s kinda complicated). I do have other components that do have an eq in them but they are not only an eq

You keep mentioning HEX v2, is that the hifiman edition X v2? you seem to really like that headphone. what do you think of the Ananda? are you talking about the drop version of the edition x?

Mon you keep saying “screw” what does that mean?

screws used to hold the headphones together.

So i actually found a solid deal on the Focal Clear for $760. If transaction goes smoothly, should have them in the next week or so hopefully.

There were two versions of the he6, with the older model having 4 screws in the headband and the somewhat silent revision having 6 screws in the headband. They sound different

Nice, curious to see how you think they stack up, really enjoy mine :+1:

I know the 6 screw well, besides the cables I tested the HE6SE and HE-6 with identical pieces. They are not the same physically or aurally. Given there is a group that agrees with me, and a bigger one that does not - it could be the 560 Adorma v3, and very likely the same with HE5SE and HE6SE.

I own the HE5LE and know the HE-5 well, supposedly the 5SE is a copy. It is not, not close. I posted pics a few months back demonstrating how far apart they are.

I also posted a long list on how my 6SE and a HE-6 6 screw are different physically and audibly. If you got your 6SE awhile back, it would make sense. I bought mine from Adorama for $699 a month ago.

Yeah I got screwed and got the 6se for like 1.5k before they started selling them for so cheap at adorama. There could be something going on there, it would make sense (as you mentioned with the 560v2 and v3 which I owned and sold after they didn’t sound as good as the he560v1). Also by saying the 6 screw is closer to the 6se, I don’t mean they sound the same, I just mean the tuning of the 6se is closer to that of the 6 screw compared to the 4 screw. I agree that the original he6 6 screw was superior imo, but doing a comparison side by side with the 6 screw and 6se, I ended up liking the se a bit more. I got it from someone who bought the se right when it was released, so perhaps the 1st couple batches had more care put into them

Loving the thread.
I was going for something like this, but for speakers, amps, the whole 9 yards and their respective can of worms

why mention the screws? i dont get it

Yes I like the HEX v2 - it’s not perfect but only has two flaws IMO. It’s short of dynamics (all big cup HFM suffer that a bit - in the low bass). and even with a pure silver cable it’s a bit short of details in the mids/highs. OTOH I find most SS equipment and transducers to overly favor the treble and ‘definition’. Now we get to the two best things about the HEX v2. It’s got an excellent ability to transmit harmonics and warmth - like a tube amp might). It’s also amazingly cohesive. It’s the best early morning or late night can I have heard (outside of the E2).

The Anada is bright to me, in the way SS amps can be bright, and somehow does seem to lack the harmonics and cohesion the HEX v2 has in spades. Not a bad can. They could be selling used for $425 inside of a year, and its better than a host of cans for that. I like the Arya better much better although it is bright around 5 kHz, its well more transparent, more insightful, better definition, better bass.

They were silent revisions and the sound of them changed. The 4 screw was brighter and a more detailed headphone, where the 6 screw was a bit more fun sounding with better bass impact and a bit fuller sound imo. People just like to call them 6 and 4 screw, it’s just what they are commonly referred to

Yeah all the larger HFM seem suffer from some compression at louder volumes

I really liked the Arya but ended up selling it (actually for the he6se, but I also ended up getting another large hifiman). I had a hex v2 before the arya and enjoyed it as well

What about the Massdrop Hex? is that the same as the HEX v2?

No, the edition xx is not that similar to the hex v2, it is more closely related to the ananda

Wow im intrigued. I discarded this headphone cause i heard it was warm and lacked detail. Now i want to hear it

Whats the E2?

Store it away in your brain for later perusal. like a chipmonk stores food in his cheeks

Back to the 6SE. I just looked at the oratory1990 numbers. I’ll play the game and set it like they have it, but I seriously doubt it’ll apply to my copy.
