Does the elex have a W signature? I think W is what I like the treble, mid-range and bass slightly up, maybe 15% I don’t like V shaped, I like my mid-range
The elex has a mild w signature
Yeah More U shaped
That is a good description. Most cans that are described as “V” have more of a U shaped curve anyway, IMO. However, as you say, I do prefer a “U” with the bass side possibly a little bit higher than the treble.
I personally like a more W shape I liek my mids boomy bass nand a bit of treble sizzle. but not so much they bleed into each other.
This is a good frequency sweeper.
all but warm or dark - the only exception is my wy wifes Koss Porta Pro with Yaxi Pads
the rest depends on mood and genre I listen to
w shaped is nice
I miss my mid forward HD 600 sometimes
u shaped is ok - v shaped not so
Loaded question i have personally been contemplating and referencing as i make each new more substantive and costlier purchase. Also, as my ears, mind and ability to discern smaller and smaller details become better trained and experienced my attitude about what i enjoy and dislike becomes more fickle. My tastes and appreciation of music and quality have also refined which seems to play a major role in my enjoyment or lack thereof.
yeah I can see why people express disdain on V-shaped sound signatures, the bass is rather too much for them or the trebles are just simply murderous. I guess that is why I prefer Neutral and Balanced sound signatures more but I guess with the right mood, I can like the V-shapes from time to time
And it isn’t that I usually love a huge v shape. I guess I do like some headphones that have a big V shape, but I usually only like a slight V shape, just a little more focus on the bass and treble, with the mids dialed back just a little bit.
Here is another good glossary:
I prefer a warm U shape, which explains why I am so picky.
Well, we can be picky so it’s alright and I cannot blame you for that. I mean we do a lot of crap for a satisfying audio experience after all.
TL,DR: The harman curve, for me, sounds like the voices are a tiny bit moved back, and I often feel like I’m not listening to a singer, but a microphone boosting the highs. Obviously it’s nitpicking. we’re talking about not even a 5dB difference max. But man does it makes an enormous difference. And a ton of 1000$+ headphones are EQing this the same.
I’m starting to believe Harman got it wrong.
Look at this graph. Ignore the Hifiman Arya. Why? It’s the baseline. Basically, high-quality AKG 371s for rich people if you want “harman neutral” (lol). Also ignore the 18dB peak at 18khz, because that’s definitely not right (ouch). It’s just that Arya (Baseline) measured -10dB ish @ 18khz.
There’s 1000, 2000, 3000$+ USD headphones in this list.
You might say they have to sell these, so, like the HD650s, they’re going for “easy listening, never agressive or offensive”.
With two different pairs of headphones, two different DAC/Amps, I realized:
Hmm, I hear a little bit less around C6 (1.5khz) – I thought it was my ears.
I hear unnatural high frequencies (all around 6khz) way too often.
Am I the only one?
Because if I apply this EQ, (1.5khz = +2.5dB, and a big dip from 2khz to 10khz – for a bit less than -5dB @ 5khz), everything sound even more natural on my HD58Xs, for example.
(HD58X graph for info. In this image, HD58X = red.)
For me, I prefer a slight U shape. Neutral but fun. It isnt an exact frequency response (otherwise I’d own the headphone with that signature). I dont own them yet, but I’ve heard the Silkwood Auteur and it is as close as I’ve heard to perfect for my preference.
