So I’ve been looking for cans depending on sound signature, but always get to an end point which I’m not really a big fan of, so I decided to just say what type of music I like, say my budget and see where i get sent to. That being said:
I primarily listen to: 70s prog rock, especially tracks like yes - south side of the sky, heart of the sunrise, King Crimson - 21st century schizoid man, in the court of the Crimson King, nier automata ost - mourning, vague hope cold rain, Celeste ost in general
My budget: 500 - 900$ (but preferably on the cheaper end)
Keep in my that I’m currently using audioquest nighthawks and LOVE THEM TO D E A T H, but wanna try better things. I’m planning to power them with a thx aaa portable. Also want them to conceal sound pretty well cause I’m a drummer and don’t want the drum sound to collide with the music from the headphones and stuff.
I’ve really enjoyed DCA Aeon Open Xs for 70s prog rock and other 60s-80s rock, and the Aeon 2 Closed are considered some of the better closed planars available in your price range.
I have been eyeing the aeon x as well, but I’m worried at how well they seal sound, it dosent need to be like full closed no sound whatsoever, but like close out most of the higher frequencies
They are pretty isolating for the wearer, honestly, but they do leak quite a lot to the outside world. The closed, I think, are supposed to have a pretty similar sound, but would obviously leak a lot less.
I don’t really care about leak, just isolation. Another question about them: how do they sound on tubes? Been wanting to try the tube stuff out as well.
Thanks, also one last question: how’s the build quality? Cause I have to take them around a lot to drum studios, gigs and college as well and I’m a pretty clumsy guy so I drop stuff quite a bit lol. The one problem I have with the nighthawks is the build cause even before taking them everywhere and dropping stuff a couple time, I could definitely tell that they were very fragile and that makes me scared.
Well, they’re definitely not bomb-proof, but I found the build quality very good, and some of the most comfortable I’ve had. Something like a DT770 or 177X Go might be a bit more durable and resistant to abuse, but have a mid recession I don’t care for with classic rock.
Thanks for the help man. Will probably get the aeon x because I also heard the sound demo and GOD they were probably one of the best sounding sound demos to me.
