So I have the 6xx and dt990 for about half a year and I’m enjoying it, have the ld2 spark and e30, I’m wondering what would be a recommendation for my next headphone, I mostly listen to female vocal, the headphones I have on my list is ad2000x k701 sundara he560s which is at about 500usd, are there any other headphones that would be suitable for my preference with the gear I have now or will I need to change some?
Sundara.
The HD6__ series is damn good for your preferred genre.
I’ve maintained that the Sundara is a next step for that general sound signature.
I like it for the speed, air and greater detail without abandoning a midrange strength and evenness.
I have Koss ESP950 that I’m awaiting a rearrange here and delivery of Modius to setup.
That’s another item that fits into this world which seems to be a lot of my stuff.
I own both of your cans as well.
Let me follow with this - have you considered trying an OTL Tube amp? Are your Beyers 250 or 600 ohm?
600ohm version and what is an otl tube amp?
A “true” tube amp, where a tube provides the power, rather than solid-state (capacitors).
Just given that you’re looking to switch up your sound, but you already have a very good set for your main genre - you also have a nice counterpart with a livelier v-shaped signature. And both of these happen to be EXCELLENT candidates (high impedance, proven track-record) to run off of tubes.
I usually ask this, but I thought I had divined what you were seeking immediately — what is it you’re looking for in changing up your sound?
I know its kind of weird saying that I want a “better” sound but I think I just want to know how good “sound” can sound if you get what I mean
We all get it, though the path can be tricky.
I’m voting Sundara or Tube amplification (but those two can not mix)
Got it, ill put sundara on my list
Yeah tubes are a great way to add some nice change to your setup. Esp with the 6xx.
A great upgrade for me was the elex. I got mine during the 550 sale though so great for that price.
The sundara is a good option it offers a pretty different presentation smooth and a tad soft especially in the mids compared to the 6xx and dt990. The vocals sound a little laid back smooth grainless and not really crisp imo. I personally prefer the crispier more intimate and more realistic timbre of the vocals with the 6x0.
If you own a 6XX and don’t own a tube amp you’ve not heard those 6XX’s true potential. Also everyone is saying Sundara which I mostly agree with. But adorama has that 799 special frequently on the HE6SE which is a way bigger step up if that still fits your budget.
An actual direct upgrade to the 6XX is the ZMF Aueteur.
The Focal Elex when it comes on sale for 550 is retarded value king. And is a massive step up and the low end is amazing. You really need a smooth amp for it though. No analytical Amps for that one tubes or class A
