Where to now.... Heresy vs IFI zen vs K5

So just last week I purchased myself a set of HD58x and wholly shit im hooked!! Listen to a pretty broad array of music and also play fair bit of FPS

My question is what should I get next…

Was looking at perhaps buying a Hersey (and just running of my z390 mobo), IFI Zen or K5 Pro as that is what i have available to me in Australia… will these improve the HD58x even more?
My other thought was should I also consider getting a pair of HD6xx as well whilst they are on sale over here (or are they to similar to the HDx58)!?

So, I would say the heresy + a dac later on would give you the most flexibility here imo, and a higher quality amp than other options. I think the heresy would give a nice quality bump to the 58x, but not night and day, but noticeable

Thanks for the reply

As someone who also just bought a pair of HD 58Xs and have been looking around, I decided on the ifi Zen DAC when compared to the other two (and many more options available). Here’s my 2 cents:

  • Since I’m also coming off motherboard sound, the affordability and all-in-one simplicity on the ifi Zen DAC(amp) sold me. I’m also interested in the Zen as I can’t say no to bass-boost that doesn’t suck, and I’ve come to realize the ‘clinical sound’ isn’t for me (the Zen doesn’t measure well, but most lean it towards the warmer side)

  • HD 58X’s are easy to drive and make up for the Zen DAC’s weak point (lack of power). Since I want to enjoy the 58X’s for a while before upgrading, this should be no issue (also lets me enjoy my SHP9500 and KPH30i’s).

  • I would have considered the K5 Pro more if I needed the extra outputs or extra power for the headphone amp.

  • Since I don’t plan to upgrade headphones in the near future, I won’t need the extra headroom the Schiit Heresy offers. I only pay about $40 more for an all-in-one (in Canada), and can always use the Zen DAC to power a balanced amp when I do plan to dabble into ‘end-game’.

Like M0N said, the heresy is the most flexible option. But a good question to ask yourself before you buy is whether or not you plan on using that flexibility anytime soon. ie. if you buy the HD6XX’s, the heresy would power them more than the Zen DAC could, but you would be tempted to upgrade from your motherboard to an external DAC sooner than later as well.

For me, I can sit on this for bit before upgrading as I want to get balanced cables + Yaxi earpads for the 58X’s, and the optional power supply for the Zen DAC (will give the headphone amp more power).

Cheers for your reply! Got the heresy. Might get a pair of the HD6xx they are on sale $260AUD atm.

Grab a black Topping E30 for your DAC and enjoy your new endgame, probably.

Imo sound sig is not different enough from the 58x to really consider the 6xx I think would be more worthwhile to find aore different headphone.

Yeah I am actually looking at either dt990 or dt880 as I play alot of fps. Thinking more towards the 990 as from sounds of it very different sound signature to hsx58.

That would be a solid choice imo

58x dt880 dt990 or 560s for competative gaming what u think is the best choice? Right now i have 58x 560s and dt880 and i cant decide which 1 to keep. I have untrained ears and hard for me to tell differences right now,. But i wanna keep 1 or 2 and sell the other to get some money back.

Strange place to post, and would love you to share some thoughts given you have three headphones in-question, in-hand right now.

Let me ask, what are you running them off of? And what impedance are the DT880?

250ohm the dt880s.

Ricky, do you have an amp? What do you plug them into?

schiit heresy amp

So i have 4 headphones total and i do alot of competative gaming. I also listen to music and watch alot of tv shows and movies. So i want to keep 2 headphones 1 for comp gaming and 1 for movies and music.

Headphones i have are 58x, 560s, dt880 250 ohm, and hifiman 400i2020 which get warm and hot on my ears. So i wanna kno which to keep for comp/casual gaming and which to keep for music and movies.

All plugged into the heresy schiit amp with meizu or apple dongle i have both.

I have someone that wants to buy my dt880s for 120usd, and im still in the 30 day return window to return the 560s for a full return 200 dollars. I love the feel and weight of the 560s and i have a short cable i got for it. I just dont know if its worth keeping and if its better than the dt880 250 ohm. I had the 58x the longest and i sold my old ones for 130 and bought them new on sale for the same price so i basically got them for free. I just honestly dont know what to do.

You need to trust yourself some.
I think the fit is going to be important.
The Hifiman are problematic, the 560s sound like your cup of tea. The 58x is going to be pretty narrow.

I feel like the DT880 would offer the combo of comfort and stage/imaging that would be king here for gaming/movies. A good rep in that world.

What music do you want to listen to?

I listen to hip hop rock pop prerry much everything. so your saying use the 560s for comp gaming and the dt880s for music and movies ? or do u think the dt880 beats the 560s for comp gaming. I like the 58x for casual gaming and music. I wanna return the 400i2020 i think and 1 more

I think the 880 is generally accepted as a better comp gaming headphone. The spatial element is where 58x would trail.

what does that mean about the 58x ? u saying i should sell the 400i2020 and the 560s then ? I was hoping the 560s would win against the dt880 because i like the lightness of them and the detachable cable but if footsteps and positioning is better on the dt880 then i prolly should keep them
