I agree, the studios soundstage isn’t vast but within it it’s imaging, separation, detail and timbre are spot on and punches way above it’s price point.
Comfort does play into listening…I haven’t tried them yet (buds or socks) but the amount of stuff (Branded zippered hard case, rings, donut and solid foams, branded MMCX cable, MMCX REMOVAL TOOL (!), rubber keychain…) makes these feel really premium, even for the price.
Still feeling them out, but they are definitely living up to their namesake! Great regular listening buds that don’t really step wrong anywhere, and pretty easy to drive with actual subbass extension (although only so far because buds not tuned for only bass). I think one is hard-pressed to recommend anything else at this pricepoint for a great all-rounder, and I need to do more critical listening to really flesh out my thoughts but they’re very easy to just get lost in listening to music which makes that even harder haha.
Love that Flathead Audio called them studio and I guess for a reason..They’re in your head and accurate for sure, but somehow they managed to hang some meat/soul/body to their ‘studio’ tuning if that’s a thing..If they can the bass a tad and add a soundstage then +++
hi! could someone help me to decide beetween the yincrow calf or the dunu alpha 3? i just want a nice build/sound earbud that last me for a very long time. thanks! (and sorry for my bad english).
I would recommend against the Calf, it’s a very bright and harsh earbud that should have been tuned differently imo. Yincrow’s Rhino uses the same shell and is a slightly warm set that sounds much better than the Calf. The Alpha 3 sounds alright it’s just a very heavy earbud so it becomes tiring to wear after a short amount of time. Any reason you were looking at those specific earbuds? Just wanting to give you some other alternatives that might have fewer downsides than those two sets.
I was considering those two earbuds mainly because they’re within my budget (around $70–80 USD max), and from what I’ve seen in reviews they seem to have a solid build quality, which is very important to me since I want something that lasts for several years.
I mentioned in another post that the FiiO FF5 are actually the earbuds I’d most like to own. They look really well-built and I love that they have a detachable cable, but they’re completely out of my budget right now.
Still, I’m open to any recommendations, and I’d really appreciate any details you can share.
If you can find one secondhand then Flathead Audio’s Studio is an awesome set, all metal, built like a tank and comes with an MMCX cable, a technical set with great detail and timbre. Fengru CZ32’s is another great set (one of my favourites tbh) it comes with either metal or plastic faceplates, I have both, same tuning but the metal one feels more premium, both are MMCX but come without a cable and are tuned a bit like a warmer Studio.
Yeah, the Flathead Audio Studio were actually perfect for what I’m looking for and for my budget too. Unfortunately, they’re sold out on the official website and also on AliExpress, so they’re really hard to find right now.
As for the Fengru, I’d never heard about them before, so I’m going to check out some reviews and impressions.
Yeah there were only 999 made all numbered, they said when they’re gone they’re gone, kinda a snooze you lose scenario. Just be aware there have been some stores on Ali selling counterfeits so stay well away.
Love my Fengru 32’s and they get more ear time than the Studios but that just comes down to my personal preferences, but both sets are
Do you have a preferred sound signature and any feature requirements such as a detachable cable? There are quite a few options in that price range and if you can wait until mid March AliExpress will have their 15th anniversary sale which should have some pretty solid discounts. You might even be able to get a higher-end earbud such as the Yincrow RW-2000 in that price range depending on sale prices and coupons but it might be a long shot as prices have gone up since I bought them for around $85 a couple of years ago.
I don’t know if I’d call the FF5 well-built as people have had the metal tuning filters on the stem fall off and they’re a custom part so you can’t just order a replacement. I had the glass cover fall off the right side of my FF3S and I was not impressed with how little adhesive there appeared to be, it was a fairly easy fix with some E6000 glue but I’ve also built multiple sets of earbuds so I had some experience applying that glue. I’ve heard some reports of people having the same issue with the original FF3 as well so I don’t think this is an isolated problem. Just want you to be aware of the issues that people have run into with Fiio’s buds so you don’t end up disappointed if you run into a problem with them.
Agree that the Flathead Studio are a great set and it’s a shame that they were a limited run, hopefully a new batch or revision is released at some point but that might be a ways down the road. Can’t think of an alternative off the top of my head that comes close to its performance/dollar.
In general, I prefer a balanced sound signature but with bass that has a good “kick.” I don’t mean bass-focused tuning, I just really like that sense of punch. A good example would be the sound of my AudioSense AQ0. I understand that with earbuds you can’t really expect something like that, especially in this price range, but I’m hoping there’s an option that comes close.
As for features, besides a detachable cable (which is really important to me), I’m interested in earbuds with a metal build and that aren’t too large, since my ears are relatively small and it’s very annoying when they fall out often.
Regarding the FiiO FF5 and FF3, I appreciate you sharing your opinion, since most reviews don’t go into that level of detail about build issues. I’m happy to answer any more questions!
