Wireless Gaming Headset Recommendations?

Hi everyone,

My Beyerdynamic MMX300 V2 are slowly dying after 4 years of loyal service. Even though I’ve been replacing worn-out parts over time, I think it’s finally time for an upgrade.

Following current trends and for the sake of comfort, I’ve decided to switch to a wireless headset. My first choice was the Audeze Maxwell, but they are currently sitting at over €420, which I find excessive. So, I’m looking at other options.

My profile and usage:

  • Platform: 90% PC (gaming, netflix etc, and listening to music). I occasionally use PS5 and will likely use the Switch 2.

  • Gaming style: I don’t care much about competitive FPS “sweating.” I prioritize total immersion in single-player games and music

  • Microphone: I spend long hours on Discord and need a mic that sounds clear and natural.

  • Audio Quality: This is my biggest fear. I’m afraid of a significant drop in audio quality moving from a wired MMX300 V2 to a wireless setup.

My concerns:

  1. Battery degradation: I’m worried about the long-term life of the internal battery.

  2. Connectivity: I would really like the option to use them wired if I feel like it or if the battery dies.

My current candidates (all available for around €250):

  1. Logitech Astro A50 Gen 5: I’ve heard great things about this but I’m concerned that they cannot be used via cable (only wireless through the base).

  2. Razer BlackShark V3 Pro: I think has a good mic but how do they stack up for music and immersion compared to Beyer?

  3. Beyerdynamic MMX 230 Wireless: The natural successor to my current setup. I value the Beyer build quality but how is the wireless implementation? Seems a little cheap

Which one do you think best fits my needs? Is the drop in audio quality from the MMX300 V2 going to be very noticeable?

Thanks for your help!

Final just came out with the Final VR3000 EX. I haven’t gotten one yet, but will in a few weeks. Totally swamped with stuff coming in to review. I have the VR3000 IEMs and they really do a great job for gaming, but they’re not comfortable and the little mic isn’t good enough. The headset looks interesting, and priced a lot less than the Maxwell.

The successor to the mmx300 v2 is not the mmx 230 or 150 wireless those are separate, you’d be looking at the mmx 300 PRO and 330 PRO that came after the V2 which made changes that are notably a improvement for many people coming from the previous model.

Can’t speak on 230 here, it just recently started to ship even over in the EU, expected more international ship according to beyer is like early Feb.

the headsets you listed outside of the 230 would absolutely be a very significant drop especially the razer.

Not the greatest idea to swing to maxwell either due to some flaws but also the new unit being in the works, though unknown when maxwell 2(if that name even keeps) will be officially shown off.

The ones with notably the best sound quality have been beyers headsets, audezes headsets, and the newest ones from hyperx but I would still rate these lower than the other two companies. Do note that of course with wireless comes some slight quality changes in terms of mic performance and sound quality as well

Due to this, I would just encourage sticking with what you know works. swing to the wireless new units or pick up the successor to your current unit would be my recommendation.

Can’t speak on Gaming IEM companies like Final as IEMS just aren’t something I do.

Sadly i cant buy this in my country =( but ty so much!

Ty so much for ur advice, i just ordered the mmx230, lets see if has enough audio quality and comfort….

i will return and buy a MMX300 Pro if im not happy with the 230 and stick with the wired beyers. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I think Audeze teased the release day of the Maxwell 2 as Jan 5th.

Could be a Maxwells 1 Restock?

Did they? if that’s the case I will definitely be keeping an eye. Anytime I have spoke to them they just tell me no information right now. Think it’s best to take it as rumor till we hear something or just see them release it I guess. All I could get out of them is that yes, it’s in the works of being made lol

sounds good. If the 230 is a good fit the battery is replaceable which should solve any concerns regarding that. I am currently waiting on it’s international release to see for myself on how it performs.

Those cups are definitely new, so I’m thinking Maxwell 2 on the 5th @Kaarosu

Would that be a CES announcement maybe?

Damn, this would be a game changer for sure, now i want to wait for it :sob:

Definitely one to keep an eye on. Looks like the start of this year beyer and audeze will be competing for the best headset spot

Not sure about the info, but looks like Asus is doing Hifiman driver gaming headset. Going to be announced at CES in a couple days.

Looks interesting but considering things, I don’t have a lot of hope when it comes to that, especially from asus or hifiman. Will see more next week i guess

If they have DSP and a Hifiman driver, I’d bet it’s the best thing available. Not much faith in most stuff coming tuned well these days, but if they have a nice DSP like some of the newer headsets are getting, it could be a game changer. I really like how some of the new headsets let you publish your EQ profiles for other people to use, too. That kind of thing would be great. That being said, if they don’t have all the fancy new tech like ANC and dual audio like the Maxwell 2 is getting, it has to be really good to warrant losing those nice features. I really just hope these things are priced reasonably but that’s probably just delusional amounts of hope.

For me personally, both companies asus and hifiman have done me dirty several times over so I will admit I have a rather strong mental bias against them for those reasons, nonetheless a good product is a good product. So we will definitely see soon enough.

Yeah I’ve had my share of issues with them but they were all centered around just the HE6se v2 and the Mini Shangs. Every other Hifiman I’ve never had a problem with.

Anywho, it was the ROG Kithara, not wireless, no DSP, open back, probably decent enough but just why…: The Republic and HIFIMAN team up for the ROG Kithara planar magnetic gaming headset

Maxwell 2 DID drop, but it’s not the higher tier version: Maxwell 2 Wireless Gaming Headset - Audeze

Gadgetry Tech said the one with ANC and fancy features comes later. Pretty lame.

 they uhh, didn’t fix some of the biggest glaring issues with it which was the weight that they decided to increase and that horrendously bad sounding microphone. Swing and a miss when you can’t even make a mic better than $70 headsets. I potentially will check it myself later but that in itself will make me immediately drop them 3 points on my 0/10 scale for such a high price.. if they intend to hold that gold standard price point I expect it to come with the best features

He did a recent headset showdown video that is quite interesting. He’s missing a few headsets on it but he does good work

id probably wear that over the maxwell as it looks far lighter and a bit more comfortable
