Hello, I’m looking to buy a AMP for my DT880 250ohm. I’m probably also buying a DT770 80ohm sometime in the future. What do you think about the MT-602. I can get it for about 80€. I’ve been also thinking about getting sound blaster x-3 (I know it’s a completely different product). I am probably not buying a dedicated DAC yet, so I would have to run it directly from the laptop. Is that ok or is it a complete nonsense?
I’m also more than happy to read any other recommendations. I’m a complete beginner in this field.
I’m currently driving it only from a laptop. That alone isn’t great. It’s even way worse than my integrated audio on a desktop I switched from (that one was actually enough for me, but I haven’t heard the headphones with an AMP yet…)
Thanks for advice!
So the MT-602 will help to drive the DT880 and will effect the sound with it’s tubey goodness. Whether or not you will like the sound is way more subjective, since tube amps do effect the sound more then a transparent style amp.
The thing is it will generally not make it sound better. If the internal DAC on your laptop is junk, then you will get louder junk in the output. The tube part of the amp will effect the sound, but it is more for modifying a clean sound then specifically fixing a bad sound. It is not complete nonsense, but I don’t know if it will do what you want it to do.
Generally what is it that you are dissatisfied about your current setup and what is it that you are looking for? Knowing that you might get some better advice.
Well, the volume is too low. I had a desktop on which it was on the verge of being loud enough (Maximus VIII Hero board). Now I swapped it for a new laptop (Lenovo Legion 5 Pro) and in some circumstances I feel it’s just too quiet. I also feel that the sound lacks detail compared to the desktop, but that might be just the volume. I forgot to mention that I mostly listen to EDM, but also use the headphones for gaming, watching videos etc.
I also thought that buying a dedicated AMP might be a good solution as I can easily buy a DAC later.
I don’t really know if I would enjoy the tube sound, but from what I read on the internet I think I actually might. I read that it smooths out the highs (sometimes annoying on DT880) and kinda make the lows more alive. Of course, it’s really subjective and I can’t know much until I try it, but if it’s really bad I can always return it.
EDIT: I also have Edifier R1280DBs, but I don’t know if I could even use it with an “headphone” AMP.
