šŸ”¶ AKG K712

The K812’s arn’t my favorite either, they have some strange things going on tuning wise. They do have good technicalities but the tuning and presentation is strange. They are very amp picky though so perhaps on the right amp they would sound correct

Now I’m wondering how the Chinese K712 differ from the Slovakian lol

I bought these adapters from Modhouse (as well as Sennheiser adapters). They’re pretty handy for pad swapping K712s.

Just a quick update: been listening for them in the FX Dac/Amp for about 2 weeks now and I can clearly see the befit. To some degree, I think the sound-stage got a little wider and the separation between instruments get to a incredible level. I also fell less the impression on both multi-vocals and electronic music, so mostly benefits.

I did begin hearing some of the strange ā€œtreble peaksā€ I heard about in some string songs. It’s like a half a second of ā€œouch, is this to loud?ā€ and then it’s gone. Definitively not enough to offend me in any way, but maybe for a treble sensitive person this may be relevant.

I also recommend a specific music to try them out: Bamako - Chamber version, by Ballake Sissoko and Thibault Cauvin. I swear I teared up a little hearing this on then, it was a freaking experience to say the least.

Hey, I am looking at buying the IFI HipDac asap and am thinking about these as well. If anyone has experience with the combo I would greatly appreciate your opinions/insights.

I have that combo. It’s sounds pretty good. The extra bass button works well too. It powers them great with the power match button. I reccomend it instead of buying something more expensive. Ive used the enog and Dark voice wich sounds a bit better but the hip dac does a good job

Thanks man, appreciate the insight!

Does anyone else have a rattle insider their K712s? Not from sound vibrations, but from just tilting your head a little. Like there’s something loose knocking around inside?

It kind of sounds like the driver is not securely held in place and is shifting slightly when I move.

It sounds like a piece of something broke off on the inside. You definitely shouldn’t be able to hear stuff moving around on the inside of it.

Definitively don’t rear a rattle or anything. The cup housing is kind of ā€œlooseā€ in the structure, but I only rear anything if I shake then outside my head. For checking what @marcgii said, try taking off the pads and looking at the driver. You just need to rotate until you hear a click, and they come off pretty easily.

Hi everyone! I bought both the akg k712 and the k702 during the 4th July sale. I have a question for k702. There is no official forum, I don’t think there are many people owning this. This is how I am hearing:

For some reason it sounds big and tall in the center. Left and right is kind of distant and small.
I am using the Modius/Asgard 3 stack

Hmm, I’ve only had the k712 and the soundstage is pretty wide but not very accurate. Now i could be wrong but a wide soundstage on a lower fi headphone isnt gonna replicate the track all that well. The parts that are gonna be thrown wide may not sound detailed compared to something being thrown more intimate. Listen to ā€œSpill the Wineā€ by Eric burdon and let me know how the soundstage/imaging/ instrument seperation and detail sound

I had both before and ended selling them. I decide to rebuy them for the sale price. The k712 sounds wide and more coherent. Coming from beyer headphones imaging is not as good lol.

Two things to consider:
First, is the connector on your amp ok? I had a similar sensation one time because the 1/4" Jack was kinda wobbly and the stereo sound was kinda ā€œunder amplifiedā€, and anything center was better to hear. I guess since everything more centered comes by both connectors, although I’m not 100% sure.

Second, are you hearing thins in multiple songs/recordings? I remember my utter shock listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers ā€œDani Californiaā€ on both the K712 and HD58X for the first time, it was that strangest ā€œball of soundā€.

Now, considering both of these cases don’t solve this, maybe you’re suffering from the inaccuracy described by @Bmn1251. I don’t know about the K702, but my K712 are not that inaccurate, but you will kinda see come ā€œconcentrationā€ of the instruments on the left/center/right position. To evaluate this, Yosi Horikawa’s ā€œLetterā€ or ā€œBubblesā€ are a great test tracks, although they do get a little on my nerves as I’m not a big fan of AMSR like stuff.

Thank you for the reply. The adapter is good, the imaging and soundstage is good. The difference came from using beyer for to long. The akg k702 sounds huge, the imaging is good, but the the added height and width it became a little difuse.

Hello! I haven’t been here in a while, I am thinking of getting these as they are pretty cheap (230€ on Thomann) I dont know if I’m gonna be a fan of the mids as they are colored, but there are alot of measurements for these and oratory even has an EQ.

I wanna get these cuz of the soundstage and the comfort and cuz they will definitely fit my head, and they seem to extend in the bass for the most part, and they are cheap, was also looking at DT880 but those probably wont fit my melon sized head.

If I could EQ them to sound like HD600/650 but with soundstage and subbass that would be amazing! definitely gonna try that!

Don’t know about 600/650, but I own both the K712 and the HD58X from drop, and they are very different animals. The bass quality is very different between both, and I don’t fell like the subbass is more extended imo. The soundstage is in fact larger, and I quite like the AKG presentation of ā€œin the roomā€ feeling.

Keep in mind they are fairly hard to drive so I recommend getting a good amp. Also, don’t know where you are in Europe but I got mine openbox in Amazon Italy for €165, so keep a lookout for deals.

If anyone else is having this issue, I fixed it. It turned out to be the articulation mechanism. If you open the back of the driver all the way there are 4 screws in there that appear to tension the articulation mechanism. They were kind of loose and tightening them fixt the popping noise.

I do apologize in advance for the length of his post.

I bought the AKG K712 thanks to Zeos’ review in late 2016. I used these headphones on a Little Dot Mark II originally, then fell into a rabbit hole within the last 4 years, going from the Audeze LCD-2C, to my love of the ZMF Eikon and now the Aeolus. I have used a tube hybrid of Xduoo TA-20 then a stack of SMSL SP200 and SU-8 as an amp/dac stack. I loved my headphones at different times and for different purposes.

All this to say that as an early Christmas/Quarantine gift to myself, I bought the Schiit stack of the Magnius/Modius. I bought it for my Audeze and ZMF, but wanted to try on the K712. I had also in the last year bought YAXI K712 / Q701 Comfort Ear Pads https://www.yaxi.jp/product-gallery/k712-q701/. I did not know what to expect but I have just been dumbfounded by the change. Zeos had mentioned he used these pads for his Ether C Flow, I thought what the hell.

Hearing what these headphones sound like with these new pads and proper (in my opinion) amp/dac, is just a revelation. The improvement to the image clarity and layering is just amazing. I do want to say you lose width and depth within the soundstage from the stock pads, but the difference is different and worth it, as well as having improved bass for balance. I have seen people recommend this headphone for gaming, not so much for music. I feel this change makes them such a strong contender for music enjoyment, in their own way of course.

I know this has just been too much to some, but the positive change for my listening experience with this headphone has me really just wanting to gush HARD. I hope everyone is trying to do well, and hope this helps someone out there. I know I am loving this combo, and really has me remembering WHY I love this headphone hobby and what sounds so good.

Interesting, I’ve been eyeing this taxi pad for almost a year now, but I always stop because the stock pads are so comfy. Maybe I will buy it for my can later. Question: did you use the original foam with it or does it have it’s own dampening?

Also, 100% agree that this in a good amplifier are excellent for some music. Jazz and big band music is a very relaxing but enough detailed experience, at least for me.
