I keep listening to this. I think it might be the greatest piece of music ever. Interestingly I keep going back and forth and A-Bing my Etymotics ER5XR and my big Senn 660S. I honestly can’t decide which does a better job. The Ety’s better in some ways; the Senn’s better in others. I guess that’s why this hobby exists: at a certain point there are few absolutes and things become a matter of taste or even mood.
Correction: I think I prefer the Etys. There’s just something about the clarity, and the extra bass the Senns provide is sort of lost on this kind of music.
I caught a piece of this on the way home from work on the radio and had to find it for tonight. Th Oboe is a great instrument. Also loving the gear lineup tonight. There is just something about feeding the SP200 through the TA-20 tube pre… I’m loving it.
AMUHD > U2 Pro > Schiit Bifrost > XDuoo TA-20 Pre > SMSL SP200 > Senn HD660 S
Caught this one on the radio on the way into work this morning. Found it on Youtube only to discover that this is FIFTEEN year old Hillary Hahn making her German debut, 1995. Incredible. Look at that fresh young face!
Enjoy. Frankly I was surprised that it hooked me the way that it did. I got tired and had to stop short of completing the album (0500 comes too soon!) so I am gonna start it over again this evening and listen all the way through.
@Raptor168 Interesting. I’ve been listening to Bruckner lately too! like Mahler, moments of great gentle beauty and then powerful grandness (he was an organist). I enjoy searching AMHD for the recordings which sound “right” to me…intonation, interpretation, recording quality (not necessarily hi-res) hall resonance, liveliness, etc. Of course this is all partially dependent on MY tastes and experience as well as my equipment and the remaining FR of my ears, lol.
I like the haunting, catching horn solo in Mvt 1 of his 4th and his final one, the 9th.
Mariss Jansons with Bavarian Radio Symphony (a collection) and Claudio Abbado with
the Lucerne Festival Orchestra doing the 9th are favorites.
That is how I happened across this, it was in the “You Might Like” section, so I gave it a shot. It seems like Amazon’s classical selection is getting better. I, too, will hunt after the better recordings.
For example, later on in the evening I wanted to hear Mozart’s Symphony #41. Turns out there a number of performances to choose from, so I will listen to one for a few moments and then try another. You kinda have to because some recordings aren’t so good, and it takes away from my enjoyment of the music.
Indeed, as our gear has gotten better the recording qualities I mentioned have become
more important. A two-edged sword, but a trade off I readily accept. Ha! Such fun! (and I agree Amazons classical selection is now quite good.) Also I have found some great non
classical music ideas in that You might like section.
