So I do prefer the sound of the allo dac, it to me it’s more refined and capable, and also more sonically flexible. It could be an upgrade that might be worthwhile, but I would honestly suggest you just save up for the higher end dacs where they really give a more substantial improvement since you already have a solid dac now, I think you would get more sound for your money that way
Thank you. I think my wife will shoot me:)
Hmmm it’s most likely a good idea to make sure that doesn’t happen lol
Looking for new fun and powerful sound dac for desktop setup, thinking about allo revolution with shipping and customs will cost me 350$ and 40$ for custom linear power supply locally. Or try smsl su-9 which is 459 with free shipping. Could you give an advice? I understand that i did not prefer the devices with ak dac chips. Which dac can compete with mojo in his own price range, i don’t even need an amp, dac only? Main point is fun and powerful sound. Is revolution fun and powerful? Is it worth 350$ without power supply?
Or maybe i should give a try for chord chordette? One man selling it locally for 400$, is it worth to try?
Hi all! Just pulled the trigger for Allo revolution with remote control, thesycon edition. I make an order from local engineer to build power supply with supercapacitors like shanti lps. I hope this will be better than modius,e30, aune x8 etc. and at least can compete with mojo, i don’t think it will be better, but at least fun to listen:) Will pair it with asgard 3.
Power supply we be ready in 2-4 weeks, delivery of allo i hope in this time period too.
@Mon thanks for the advice
Hello all! As i told before, i will share my impression about allo revolution. I received the unit and decided to make a first listen, it was very tempting, i stared to connect cables, and after USB was inserted i felt that something wrong there. I removed usb cable and was shocked - usb port was dropped inside the unit! It was physically broken and felt inside the dac. Thanks god, that i didn’t powered it.
What a pity surprise, i hope sound quality will be better than build quality, this is actually the first dac of maybe 20 different dac which was owned by me in the past, which broken that way.
I’m disappointed and decided to send the unit to local Ukrainian engineer, which creates for me linear psu.
I hope this thing will be last quality issue with the unit, and after repair i will be glad for purchasing revolution + flux labs fa-12s.
Hi! My unit was repaired and custom power supply was created for this unit. I have question about the driver: where i can download driver for this unit for thesycon edition on windows 10? @M0N could you please assist?
Some photos of power supply at engineer home, im still waiting for this units, they will be delivered in a few days. Nichicon and wima capacitors was used. Price of crafted unit is 130 for me.
Here is the driver (I know it looks sketch but this is the official allo link)
@M0N Thank you very much, maybe im blind because didn’t find it:( i hope this will be nice replacement for the mojo
Hello, today started ti burn in dac and power supply. I have several questions,
- is there any manual for this unit?
- How to reset settings to default?
- What is the default settings, please help.
@M0N maybe you will help me again?can’t find any manual, and can’t info about the filters:(
I found Allo + Asgard 3 stack very sensitive to RCA cable quality, decided to connect them with 20cm cable, Allo is sensitive usb cable too, i hear different sound signatures between usb Supra and usb Belkin, maybe im crazy, but supra is more real like. Still waiting my Flux lab amp to arrive, they said that it should be delivered until 26 of february
First impressions about the allo: in comparison to mojo it provides more powerfull and more contrast/dynamic sound, which is much more interesting to listen, i think in direct comparison mojo a bit clearer, but mojo is actually empty in comparison to revolution in lower frequencies, nice device, i hope it will become a little bit clearer with burn-in. The sound is much more lifelike in comparison to E30, modius, aune x8, yes @M0N, you was right this device is better than x8. But it is not endgame, i think after flux lab will be delivered, i will try something like bifrost/denafrips/d90 don’t know. But in direct comparison to mojo, stack allo + asgard 3 is a little bit muddy, i think this Asgard 3 sound signature cause this impression, can’t wait for flux anymore:(
Default values are in the manual
Nice, just wondering have you played around with the filter settings and harmonic control? Also have you tried bypassing the oversampling as well? Lots of different sound combinations to go through.
Nice, will be curious on your thoughts on those, they are a step up from the allo (at least the bifrost and denafrips, personally I don’t think the d90 is all that good)
Thank you for response and help, sad that i didn’t find manual on their brand site:(
Their documentation is all over the place, I had a hard time finding any information when I got mine as well
Thanks, i think manual will help a lot. I hope in my setup amp is bottleneck, and flux will give me much clearer presentation, because currently sound a little bit muddy, mojo is clearer, but not so fun to listen.
@M0N Did you notice sound improvement after burn in of dac and power supply? is it worth to leave it burning in?
Since you have a custom psu I can’t really say, wouldn’t hurt to leave it on if you feet the need. Regarding the clarity, try messing around with the 3rd order harmonics and also the oversampling filters, as that can add more clarity if needed (but I think you are due for an amp upgrade as well)
That’s pretty shitty to have problems with 2 units, hopefully things speed up and it gets resolved
Allo revolution sends me replacement unit, which arrived few days ago, now everything work properly, i can recommend this brand for so good service.
So i picked this up together with the nirvana powersupply. It came in friday. My comparison is only the Topping E30 which i use for a few month now.
I had the itch to buy something but didnt want to shell out 860€ for a Denafrips Ares now so i just bought the allo because i had interest in it.
For now im sitting in a weird place with it tbh.
At first i listened mostly with oversampling bypass off and filters activated. The problem is that i can´t really differenciate the filters apart. There might be something different but i think i can´t heart it( unfortunatly, maybe my ears are not trained enough, maybe my tinnitus disctracts or i just can´t hear it :D).
Compared to the E30 it sounds almost identical to me. Some little things might change but i dont know for certain.
So any recommendations for settings? I´ve read that the 2nd harmonic should make the sound thicker and the 3rd makes it brighter the higher the number. Is that true?
Probably its really a little bit brighter in the very high frequencies if i turn it all the way up.
Its different if i switch the Oversampling bypass on. it sound totally different know.
I try to describe it compared to the E30.
The highs are a lot less forward now
Voices seem quite a bit less clear and somehow a bit muffled ( effect of lost clarity?) and drop a bit more in the background…its like the singer is a bit further away from the microphone - voices in general get a bit darker, the higher sounds fade a bit away. Probably its an increase in stage but i really struggle to understand.
Cymbals are not sharp anymore.
I played Escape from Tarkov in the morning and it was raining ingame. In oversampling mode the rain and the footsteps sounded like im used to, with oversampling bypassed the rain became quite a bit quieter, probably more natural. Probably, i can´t decide on that yet.
It doesn´t sound bad, it sounds good, no question. I think i have the problem, that i havent heard many other dacs ( modi 2) + i don´t really know what to expect from a Dac change. I will give it more time to see if i think its worth to keep or really take the higher step and import a Bifrost 2 or something else.
I use my T1.2 and my Focal clears and my Lake People g109S.
It just takes time, they are more subtle tbh, the harmonics control is more noticable than the filters (and the difference between filter bypass on and off as you noted)
That’s been my experience, ideally you want to find a balance between them, it’s something you will just want to tune by ear, although when doing that I would make sure to spend some time with each adjustment
I would spend at least a week with it, and if you don’t find it worthwhile, it’s probably time to make that jump to something like the ares or bifrost. But the differences in dacs generally isn’t immediate, it’s something that you start to notice more as time progresses and it gets more worthwhile as you go on
I will give it at least one or two weeks before I form a decision. I will update here
