Yeah it’s been pretty boring with Mercedes dominance. But that’s not much different from when Ferrari was dominant. The last race however was action from beginning to end.
I miss the V10 cars a lot. Those engines are the most intense thing I’ve ever heard.
Well, they have basically given us a sneak peak at that crap. It’s called Formula E and it’s completely unwatchable! Almost as bad as the TT Zero. Ugh…
Never got to hear the V10 live, but i did get to hear the V8 first at Spa on a test day in July 2007, then in 2008 at the Monaco Grand Prix where i and a mate attended. Those where loud and raw too. You felt it in the body when the went passed. We took the train in to Monaco from Cannes, where we stayed, and getting out of the train station in Monaco they fired up the cars for first practice, so we immediately had to get our hearing protection in place as we navigated our way to our spectating area for the day.
Oh man, you missed out. Sitting just past the turn at the end of the back straight in Indy, you don’t see the cars until the breaking point. But you hear them accelerating along the whole back straight. Sounds like angry banshees coming to destroy the world lol. It was so visceral.
I can imagine… That said, the Torro Rosso did run V10 in 2007, but when i was at spa, it was wet, and they where not flat out at eau rouge where we where standing… The visit to spa was unplanned though as we just thought we would see the track on our way from the Nurburgring back home to Norway. As we where driving around to find an entrance we heard there where cars on track, so then we just had to check it out. We couldn’t stay for too long, but we did get to be there about 2 hours in the wet
The Champ Car years were fun around here at Laguna Seca. When those things went by you at full song the wall of sound penetrated your body and made you contract! Just awesome. I’ll never forget that fury. Made me sad that the DP01 never had a chance to be developed further. Great car.
I heard F1 in person at Montreal in the mid-90s. For my money the only other thing that I’ve ever experienced that’s in the same league for engine sound are the nitro cars from NHRA. That’s a totally different kind of sound of course but it’s the only other type of car I’ve ever heard that registers in the same ballpark for the GOOD GOD! factor.
For reference I’ve also heard CART/Indycar in the late-80s and early 2000s as well as NASCAR in the Mid 2000s. Impressive and still cool as hell but just not in the same league as F1 and NHRA nitro. I ended up talking to a guy at an NHRA race who also had attended F1 in the V10 era. He had the same opinion: “There’s these things and F1. Everything else is a notch below.”
Agreed. MotoGP is right up there as well. Just Brutal! I got to work a few of the races when they would come. Nothin like it, man. I’m grateful that I got a chance to do it.
I’m going to go and predict a Red Bull 1-2 for pole with Hamilton sneaking in there for a Red Bull 1-3 on Sunday (on strategy). Imola is a lot of sector 2 Bahrain where Red Bull was taking out 4 tenths on Merc every lap. Should be a fun race.
Unless Hamilton and Merc has something special up their sleve, i think you should be spot on with that prediction of imola.
Hopefully the mid field will be close, and even though imola might not be the best track for overtaking, i hope we get to see some close fighting through out the field.
