I used to own an Audio Technica M40x and this month it recently broke, due to an unfortunate mishandling of my little brother on which he borrowed it from me. It is so far is the best headphones I had ever owned and now it’s gone. Now, I got the MH751 from Cooler Master which is a rebranded version of the Takstar Pro 82, sound wise, I am not sure which is which better for a particular thing like music, gaming and sometimes recording some songs since I make my own songs and record it as a hobby. I just want you guys to lend me your thoughts and which is better sound wise and other aspects of each that I don’t know of, thanks.
I personally think the sound of the mh751 is more suited towards music, where the m40x is tilted more towards studio monitoring. The m40x is a bit more in your face and emphasizes detail, where the mh751 is more relaxed and less pushed forward. The m40x has a flatter response. Detail wise they are pretty similar imo, but I think the mh751 actually has better imaging and soundstage. And then comfort just goes to the mh751
yeah I heard that from the others as well and yeah I still miss those headphones for listening as well as for making my music as a hobby. though the downside of the M40x were its pads I replaced it with some soft earpads and there have been improvements overall for me. I guess I could buy a new M40x once I saved up.
Some excellent studio headphones would be the dt880, so if you decide you want to pursue that they are great
yeah they are good but my budget right now is like not so good, I mean pursuing hifi audio as a hobby can be expensive after all. though I wish in time I can get top notch headphones in the future.
Starting small and working the way up is the most fun approach imo
yeah indeed, but yeah I am happy with my MH751 and I believe I can say it’s like the more chilled version of the M40x, I mean the treble is like not too emphasized like the M40x and the M40x was like my first legit hi fi headphones, the previous one I used before that was the Hyper X Cloud 2s which is a Takstar Pro 80 rebrand.
You guys think M40x would be great first pair headphone for casual listening? Or the MH751 would be better?
For not spending too much money, I would go for the MH751. Since the pads of the MH751 are stock and comfy as hell, unlike the M40x, you would have to replace it stockpads with memory foams like HM5 Brainwavz earpads or the ZMF Cowhides. Also the fact that a pad replacement makes the soundstage improve on the M40x can be a deal breaker, since you don’t have to do that with the MH751. Also you have a detachable mic for the Mh751 and they crystal clear like you can use it for streaming with no problems. All-around, the MH751 is good but the M40x is also good, but modding is involved.
So you think that I shouldn’t go for the M40x if I don’t mod them? How about the sound quality between these 2 though? I would purely use this for music listening so the mic doesn’t really play a role on my end.
Probably, since there are reports that the M40x with the stock pads isn’t going to cut it and I can speak from experience since mine back then had stock pads and the soundstage with those on are almost non-existent. But with the replacement with those mentioned ear pads, the sounds I have heard from mine improved, making the soundstage existing.
MH751s to me are neutral in sounds while the M40xs are a bit V-shaped but not to a degree where it can be mundane to my preference of sounds. If you don’t mind modding headphones to spend extra cash, M40x, if you want to save money, MH751s.
I’m coming from a 10-15 dollars earbuds so I’m pretty sure M40x’s soundstage is enough so satisfy me I guess… My budget is under 100 USD, no more than that. The MH751 costs about 65 dollars and 85 dollars for M40x here where I live. I would actually prefer to pay just a bit more if the sound quality of M40x is worth the extra 20 dollars. I mostly listen to hip-hop, vocals focused musics and acoustic types as well.
Then the M40x is the one for you. with Brainwavz HM5s/ZMF Cowhides ear pads on it, along with a braided cable that has the similar locking style for the M40x, That modded version of the M40x for me is legendary. imo, it is one of the best Audio-Technica headphones out there and definitely better than the M50x. Sound-wise I think you can get more detail out from the M40x than the MH751, even with the pad swap.
But the sad thing is, with all those mods it would be way over 100 USD. It’s not possible for me to spend more than that…
Then go get the MH751s, sure they are not detailed as the M40x post-modded but the comfortable ear pads you get from it is just top-notch and I was able to wear my MH751 for like a whole day, not knowing that it was on my head the whole day. They are neutral, but they are very good with music listening and they are pretty much the improved version of the Takstar Pro 82, also good headphones and the MH751 is a rebranded Takstar Pro 82.
I have listen to many songs with different genres, and I must say in my opinion, this is like a Swiss army knife in terms of the sounds that you will get from each.
Alright. Thanks for the confirmation. What do you think of the treble on MH751 though? Is it well extended? Is it crisp but smooth at the same time as well? Or is it underemphasised? Also, my source is an old 2013 Macbook Pro 13 inch. Do you think it will be sufficient enough to drive them? Or a phone is a better choice? Do you think wearing glasses is going to affect the sound quality of it? Cause the frequency response consistency shown on Rtings is below average which means positioning is vital for the bass, mids and highs to shine.
Its treble is just right, not too weak and not too treble murder levels. Wearing it with glasses, I am sure due to the pads being that soft, it’s not going to be an issue. In terms of driving it, it’s pretty easy to drive, for I can listen to music without ramping up the volume too much.
Also reviewers such as RTINGs or Zeos, I only see them as a guide not as a factor if I should buy a headphone or not, because I am one of those who would rather hear it for himself, to see what they are claiming is true or not.
Oh okk right. Thanks for the answers. Much appreciated
One last thing, is it true that the MH751 has an overall flatter sound signature compared to M40x which has elevated bass and treble?
I would suggest shure srh 440 over m40x anyday. Never heard the akg k361 but they seem to be really good options too.
