Hey,
I had the pleasure of trying these cans, and I was blown away enough that I decided I would jump right into my next upgrade.
My only issue is that Iām not sure what my other options are at and below this price range that directly compete with the lcd x OR come from a similar line of sound at a better price.
Any recommendations what other headphones I should be looking at to make an informed decision?
Iāve been daily driving a sundara for a few years, and Iām extremely pleased with them if that says anything about my taste. Some other headphones I really liked would be the x00 ebony and the hifiman xs, although the xs wasnāt a big enough jump for me to justify the upgrade.
Iād also like to know if there are any other lcdās worth considering if I didnāt like the lcd5? The x and 5 would be the only 2 Iāve heard.
Have you auditioned either of the Arya variants to see if they suit your tastes? Arya V3 might not be were it is at for you, but maybe the Arya Organic? I have yet to hear them myself as I already own the V3, but others have said it āfixed some of the V3ās shortcomingsā. A lot of headphones in the $1k to 2k space, so I would suggest doing as much research as possible before pulling the trigger. I upgraded from the Sundara to the Arya V3, but there are some tradeoffs (mainly bass and slam depending on your source gear). My daily driver amp is the Mjolnir 3 at the moment, and it adds bass and slam back to the Arya V3 (weigh your expectations though).
Keep in mind that my ears are not your ears, and you have to go with whatever sounds good to you. If the LCDx is indeed the sound signature that moves you, then I would go for it. On the other hand, if you have the ability to audition more headphones before making your purchase, it never hurts to have more information before making your purchase.
I am at my next upgrade point myself; although in my case I am going with the ZMF Atrium open to complement my Arya V3 (different sound signatures I know, but who doesnāt like tasting different flavors ).
Anyway, Good Luck with your decision, and Happy Listening!
If you want a good deal on an LCDX hit me up with a DM. Others that I like more is Audeze LCD3 since it has better mids to my ears and fit wonāt be any different, the only thing is they are a $2k headphone.
Also what kind of chain are you using because the LCDX is pretty easy to drive where a lot of others in its price range arenāt as easy.
Thank you for the replies.
I havenāt had the opportunity to listen to the Arya, Iāll make sure to check it out before I pull the trigger.
At the moment I think that the LCD X is the absolute upper bound of my budget, so Iām not looking at anything as wide as the 1-2k category haha. Even as it is, I plan on paying by installments.
Iām using a JDS Atom, and I donāt plan to upgrade in the near future, so Iād need something that my atom can drive comfortably.
Iām thinking I should probably give the LCD 2, the already mentioned arya, the ananda and Focals within my budget a chance.
But honestly, if I look at how worn my Sundara looks even though I use it with care, sadly I canāt imagine paying anything more for the build quality of a hifiman.
Until now no other headphone had the same effect on me as the LCD-X, but I barely tried anything comparable to it in price, so what Iām really looking for is confirmation that itās not just the jump in price and quality category that made me fall in love with it but also its unique characteristics.
That being said, Iām looking for the best value too so if you have any other tips keep it coming.
I recently got a used pair of Audeze LCD-Xs, I think they are from 2015, but I upgraded to the newer leather pads and grilles and they are the best headphones I have ever heard. I definitely found my endgame for headphones and now Iām on the hunt for my endgame IEMs with a similar sound haha
Iāve also owned the Hifiman Anandas, Sennheiser HD6xx, HD600, HD660s, Sundaras, Monoprice M1570C, AKG K702, K371 and tried the Sennheiser HD560s, HD820s.
The Anandas are great sounding as well but felt like they didnt get the best out of my library.
These are by far the most impressive, when I first heard them I was blown away, I have not felt that way since the first time I tried the Sundaras when I began my audiophile journey!
I spent $500 for the pair plus another $100 for the pads and grille upgrade, so for $600 I couldnt imagine a better headphone. My library is mostly Prog metal, death metal, Black metal, minimal techno, drum and bass and alternative rock. I think the bass extension on these is incredible and they take EQ so well!
I found some time to drop by the audio store near me, and give these headphones a try:
Ananda, Ananda nano, Arya organic, Focal Elex.
Iām happy to announce that I ultimately stuck with the LCD-X, and it was an easy choice. I canāt really explain the whys, but the tuning of the vocals is much closer to what I think tracks should sound like. It wasnāt even the detail for me but how much it helps with immersion.
Is there a recommended EQ being passed around? Iām totally satisfied with how my pair sounds, but Iād like to try it if there is one.
Oratory1990ās EQ works well with the sometimes-weird mids of the LCD-X 2021. I also liked the Audeze presets in Roon, which from what I understand are the same as the Reveal plug-ins that Audeze sells.
There also is a very good convolution filter for the LCD-X 2021 at Jaako Paasonenās repository of EQ files.
That is so cool that you have an actual physical store where you can go and look at things and even try them out. There is nothing even close to that in my area. Shame, that.
