I was considering getting myself a pair of m40x’s (got them for my gf for Christmas and she loves them) but i would also use them for gaming. I’ve done some looking and people are saying a good pair of open backs with a nice sound stage and imaging would help here. I was hoping to get some input and maybe some light shed on a deal i may have not seen yet. I would like to purchase them from amazon as that is where i have some gift cards for, and my budget is about $150. I was looking at the Sennheiser HD599 SE’s and they seem like a good deal right now. I believe Z said in his gaming audio video that the shp 9500’s are a good cheap option. I’m down to try anything as it will be new and my first foray into the world of quality audio. New/used doesn’t really matter, any advice/suggestions are appreciated
Honestly, I think the hd58x is the right choice in this case imo. (didn’t see the amazon part, not on amazon) Just to check, what do you listen to and what aspects of sound do you really enjoy?
I have been gaming with ATH-AD500X’s for the longest time. Super light, question is if you like the “floating” flaps.
700x’s on sale for $92
Huh they kind just disappeared off of amazon for a while, but I guess they are back now lol
If you really enjoy competitive gaming, the ad700x is great. It highlights footsteps and emphases spatial queues, and also has good separation. It has very good imaging for the price and can accurately recreate a space that makes it very easy to locate sounds in a space. Comfort can be a bit iffy for some, but if you don’t mind a more bass light and airy signature, I would say the 700x are great
I listen to mostly hard rock (ADTR, iPrevail) and metal/metalcore (upon a burning body, for today), with some pop mixed in. I do play mostly shooters. I’m currently using the Hyper x cloud 2’s, they have an inline sound card that creates virtual 7.1 stereo surround. I wouldn’t mind trying them out and seeing how they perform
Do you like a wider sound, or something more intimate? Also do you prefer something warmer sounding, or perhaps a bit more bright or v shaped
Personally I love “floating” headbands, I find them very comfortable. What the ath-ad series has is interesting though, I’ve never seen cut in half like that
You might find the ad700x pretty comfortable then if the signature matches what you think you would like
It is interesting indeed.
There are a few other great “first headphones”, just wait for the community to find this thread.
I guess also if he need a headset with a mic, the sennheiser game one would work nicely imo. It has a warmer sound that’s still somewhat balanced with great comfort. Mic is pretty nice for the price too
I had to look up the terminology, I would say that i prefer something wide, and warmer. My cloud 2’s for instance i would say are very warm, the bass is great when listening to the aforementioned genres. However, I wouldn’t mind something with a bit less bass and more clarity. As for the mic I have one, I stream on occasion and ended up buying a Blue yeti. If it’s any consolation, I use a shock mount, wind screen and pop filter lol.
Okay, so you are covered on the mic front.
You are way ahead of me, I am still too lazy to hook up my XLR mic…
That’s my next step, the yeti is very big and i’d prefer something thinner. Also, when i looked at the used ad700x’s, the $92 ones say they would arrive by the end of January, not too sure how that works considering they are shipped and sold by amazon with Prime. I would probably get the lightly used ones with a meh box, that doesn’t bother me too much.
Hmmm, what about a he400i perhaps? Not that warm, but pretty wide, with great planar bass, and lots of detail. Slightly recessed mids though
I’ve seen them around but had to look them up for details. Holy moly what a gorgeous pair of headphones, and the discount is insane right now. I almost feel like those can’t be beat for that price. Although it sounds like they are for a very specific listener, i will definitely keep them in mind thank you
these seem up your alley, and its audio technica
and these if you wanna strech your dollar:
The brand isn’t that important to me at this moment. I do have things I prefer, but not for audio with my limited knowledge. I appreciate the recommendations, but they both are a bit out of my price range
Not sure how the beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro would do for gaming.
The AKG K-612 Pro may be another option.
Okay. 120 Ohm may be possible depending on what source device you have (soundcards and even onboard sound can manage).
The 990 is out of this race though.
They both look like interesting headphones, although I don’t have an amp, just the dac in my LG G8 (same dac as the v20 and v30 i think). Would my phone be able to power either of those sets without an amp?
I see, I mean they are out of my price range, but I really like the all black. They do have an 80 Ohm version, but I’m guessing for the same price i would just want to go with the 250 Ohm.
This is a direct quote from the audio portion of the spec sheet on my motherboard, " Dual Op Amplifiers
With two op-amps onboard you’re able to pump exceptional audio to your favorite cans, with 32-600Ω-headphone impedance for great flexibility."
And apparently my lg g8’s dac is said to work up the to same 600 Ohms. Although, that doesn’t mean either would drive anything like that very well I suppose
