I’m really confused on what I should upgrade. I’m a somewhat hardcore gamer and I enjoy listening to rock music and hip hop/trap music as well. I have the JDS Labs Atom and the Topping D30. I am using the HD6XX, they are my only headphones. What do you guys suggest? I was originally thinking of getting the Argons and the Liquid Carbon X + SDAC or getting the THX AAA 789-- but what DAC would I pair it with? Are HD6XX the right choice? It’d be great to receive some advice for my future purchases! Thanks.
So are you more of a casual or competitive gamer? And what type of sound do you prefer so far, what are you looking to get out of a new headphone? Also what budget range?
I’d say I’m competitive and I don’t really know the sound types. I like bass in songs but I heard that bass is not good for gaming.
Do you mind something brighter? And also like what games are you playing?
I don’t know what bright is. I use the HD6XX and people say those are neutral? I play Sea of Thieves, Fortnite, Battlefield V, Battlefront 2, and some others.
Hmm, brighter would be more treble oriented. For games like that you would want a larger soundstage and good imaging. What was your price range again?
Budget doesn’t really matter, I kind’ve want endgame to stop worrying about upgrades.
Welllll, like how endgame are we talking lol
6xx is a good music can so you really just need a good pair for gaming, also there is no such thing as a true endgame.
Since you are more on the competitive shooter side off things you are gonna want something with great imaging and spatial awareness and decent treble to hear footsteps easier. DT 880 600ohm should cover all of those things while also being a decent pair for music as well if you want something a little different from your 6xx. Should also work fine with your current amp and dac combo.
given your preferences and use case the 6xx isn’t a great pair of headphones
It’s not strictly related to your headphones, but it is audio-related - what microphone are you using? I assume you’re using voice comms of some kind.
I’m using a Blue Yeti.
Yeah well, something like the ADX5000 or Meze Empyrean, if you’re looking for summit-fi endgame, or maybe even the Audeze MX-4?
Lower than that, in the $300 range, the R70x is really good.
We don’t really know what he is looking for yet so I would hold off of the higher end headphones for now. With his use case and what he listens to and for gaming I don’t think the r70x would be the best option (and he also already has the 6xx which might be a similar tuning)
Gotcha.
So knowing what kind of sound you want is more important, and what you will be using it for as well.
Yeah, he really should figure out what sound signature he wants, and also make sure it would preform well for gaming. Also I would suggest sticking to under 1k for these headphones as I think you should experience something in that range before taking the jump into the above 1k range
What’s the dif between the dt 880 pro and the dt 880 premium 600ohm?
So assuming they are both the same impedance, the pro has a coiled cable and more clamp on the headband, and the premium has a flat cable with less clamp (more comfortable imo). Personally for what you are looking for, I think it would be worth the step up to the dt1990 if you wanted a large jump improvement. The 880 is great imo, don’t get me wrong but I think you would get more of an upgrade than the 1990 for both gaming and music
the 1990 or the 1990 pro?
There is only the 1990 pro
