So many sets are coming out and I get it, gotta strike while the iron’s hot but they’re so hot, they’ve burned a hole through my bank account.
I can take solace that ramen instant noodles taste so much better while listening to a good set of IEMs.

I already have a tribrid so I’d normally pass but this one…
@hawaiibadboy if it’s not too much trouble, could you take a listen from 5:52 onwards how the Mahina pulls this intense part of the recording off? I usually have trouble with it, it’s either her voice that’s too forward and shouty, drowning out the band, OR the drums and the rest overpower her and I can’t even hear the piano in the background

You got a flac or this YT ver is good enough?

This is the only version I know of, no lossless

Actually the Piano is the main in replay with the brass section shimmering over like cymbals when they go and she is between them both
1)Piano keys
2)Her
3 and jumping to 1 at points) Horns/Brass jumping both in moments

see, I need the Mahina, research suggests…

Not familiar with how that is intended to be presented unfortunately.
Piano is clearly the center, I’m imagining she is supposed to be?
It’s the Piano though.

The piano’s center to center-left to my ears (and listening now on the OG Monarch), it’s probably why I get the either/or between her (insane) voice and the band.
If she’s not shouty yet present, and yet you can hear the band properly, it’s a win in my book (also, to be fair, she’s a smart singer, she pulls away from the mic QUITE a bit when she gets to her highest notes, and with the track so busy, I imagine that’s tricky).

on Olina, now I get the point.
That is intense. She does step away from mic when she is wailing often.
No Janis Joplin imitations with her.

Thanks. that was interesting. not familiar with it at all and no idea what to really listen for but her.
Stock Olina would not be best for that.

Oh Shoshana’s a powerhouse, you can tell she feels every note that comes out of her body no matter what she sings.

In any case, thanks so much, Chris, I really appreciate the effort (and your time)

(Sidenote, because we’re basically talking about positioning so it’s crossed my mind, I suggest you do a video at some point on how you approach “presentation” when you’re doing the tuning? What I mean by that is everything BUT the timbre and sound of certain instruments/frequencies. Things like imaging, soundstage, “layering”, “3D”. I imagine it’s all in the tuning of an IEM as well and not the inherent capabilities of any given driver)

@hawaiibadboy Why must you do this? I’ve already got a Moonlight and adore it. It’s the closest IEM I’ve heard to perfection for my preferences. However, I was to tempted by the changes on the Mahina and ordered. My smallest of issue with the Moonlight is at times I just want a little more thump. More so when completely jamming out and not relaxing as much.

I enjoyed the Kinda Lava bass tuning but, the extra 3k energy was a smidgen to much. Mostly noticed it on electric guitar driven music like Metallica - The Four Horseman. I don’t experience the same thought on the Moonlight. Even the UP and Tea so, I’m left to believe that’s one of the key areas that effects me. Moonlight seems to have my idea treble tuning and now with your bass target I’m thinking it’s safe to say it’ll be a winner. Maybe time will have me selling one or using both to suite different modes.

I had been debating on other IEMs it’s just I’m kind of getting worn out on playing the guessing game and not enjoying it. Mahina tuning mixed with my already solid love for the Moonlight was a no brainer. Can’t wait to receive them.

@hawaiibadboy is the mahina a limited release? Linsouls email made it seem like it was

Just pulled the trigger on the Mahina. I’m more than satisfied with my current setup, but glowing moonlight reviews and an ideal fr pushed me over the edge. Been meaning to try a Yanyin set for quite a while, but hesitated for a variety reasons (impedance, set similarity, etc). Wallet is now locked down for iem’s/audio for the foreseeable future. Thanks for this HBB.

Before I ever imagined I would work with them it was my only nitpick

Kick Drum “When the Levee Breaks”
Bass guitar “Sultans of Swing”

Audiophile is HiFidelity is Faithful reproduction. Those 2 things stuck out.
Love everything else about Moonlight.
The shell is like the TEA and fits great and stock tips work cuz of that.
Looking forward to your thoughts.
That exchange between me and @olinko about a singer was notable because i skipped the last part. ADHD is real…
Didn’t even notice the drums.
The piano and her and brass instruments were trading blows nicely.

Waiting for the video on Mahina.
Picked up Monarch MK2 for an all rounder set against my better judgement and it doesn’t jive with me. Hopefully Mahina will do the job.

Lotta people love it. It’s got some dry /light midbass and the treble steals focus. Like Variations I know why it’s loved. I just have different tastes.

One more question for you @hawaiibadboy. Would you say the bass texture of the Mahina is closer to that of the Canon or the Serial? I figure since its a Yanyin IEM it is similar to the Canon which would be unfortunate as I thought the Canon bass was boomy and a bit puffy
