Bad Guy Good Audio Rankings and stuff (under construction) (Part 2)

Nice!!! I don’t even think mine has shipped yet. Did you order it on release or get an early access perk?

I was one of 1st 3 people approached about buying into the project.
I jumped on the idea and my unit is #2 actually. I think that’s my #??

Nice. @Sonofholhorse and I also have a pair ordered. Got a few members one our both of us will be getting them on tour too. If these end up living up to the Helio reputation and getting favored over them it’ll be sad they are so limited. Which speaking of that I’m surprised there’s still sets left. You have the OG correct? Would be eager to hear some general comparison or at least an honest opinion of which you prefer.

@hawaiibadboy have you ever compared Hua with Jewel?
It looks a bassier Jewel🤭

Brighter than Jewel?
I loved Jewel mids and highs but I lacked a bit mid bass when I had on loan with N6ii ti.
Now I’ve N7 and DX320X with AM11.2s/AMP14 but FR comparison with Hua made me think on its bass :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Thanks. Many people had fit isses with these, but i must have weird ears, because they fit me perfectly…so did the Z1R for that matter. I brought my Helios OG with me on vacation, so ill spend some more time tonight. Anyway, Im glad to be a part of the tour group and will gladly share aome sets to spread the happiness.

I am enjoying them a bunch.

I was also asked to compare the Z300 to the Mele, so here goes. They are very similar, probably more than the graphs would indicate. Tonally they are both warm, with very good timber for classic rock. They graph similar in the bass, but from the pinna gain, they don’t look close at all, yet they sound pretty similar. There might be a hint more sparkle in the Z300, but it is pretty subtle, and that will be a theme.

Listening to the same songs back to back, I think the Mele has a wider sound stage, but the Z300 has better imaging. But they are very close. Normally for these I tend to use Steely Dan and Santana, they both had very good sound engineering with lots of positional instruments in their recordings.

I am not sure why, but the deepest sub-bass seems like it hits a little harder on the Mele, but again they are incredibly close. I think the resolution on the Z300 was a tiny bit better. It could be a better driver, or just the wear and tear on my Mele. I have two pairs ( black and blue ), and they both have loads of listening time on them ( they were my goto for work ).

I bought my Z300 in blue, and they look fantastic, but I will likely get a gold pair too, just to have a backup. The fact that the Z300 is basically a cheaper version of the Mele is amazing, and that is before you throw in that cable. I have better IEMs, but not at that price point. The only cheaper IEM that I view as a must own is the QKZxHBB, but the bass on that is just amazing. My next one costing more is the EA500, but the Z300 is half the price of the Simgot.

TLDR, if you like rock, the Z300 is a great deal, and very much like the Mele.

I did all of the head to head using a Topping DX1 DAC/Amp, which might be the most underrated piece of gear I own. For $100, you get 280mW x2 of single ended power, and the AK4493S DAC is solid. It is enough power for all but the most demanding headphones, and overkill for my IEMs.

Man, owning the Mele already I might pass on it but I do have two questions. Do they build up moisture on the filter like Mele and do they fit in a similar way to the Mele?

I never had the original moisture issue, but most of my listening was done when I lived in LA county, where it was probably too dry for that to be a thing. I might have more issues now that I am back in Omaha.

The Z300 is noticeably heavier, and that was the only negative on the comfort for me. Despite being a more triangular shape than Mele, they fit pretty well. The Z300 has a thinner shell, and it makes the nozzle appear longer, but I didn’t notice it in my ears. The Mele and Olina almost felt like they were made for my ears, and I won’t put the Z300 in that camp, but they were good. I tend to have issues with larger shells ( the T3+ is about my upper limit ), or overly molded interiors ( like the KZ CRN ), so fit is a thing I care about.

That makes a ton of sense. I think the Z300 is a great replacement, but might not be a must buy for people that still have the Mele.

Would you think a resin build would cut down on the build up? If that’s a thing and something like the Maka came back I would hop on that like it was Veronica Rodriguez.

I would typically take resin over metal. Resin is good for a number of other reasons, like they are never as shocking to put in when they are cold, and they are lighter.

Well my PR2s arrived yesterday…been in my ears for an hour or so this morning.
Ill get the negatives (such as they are) out the way.
Cable isn’t great but at this price that is perfectly reasonable and its adequate.
Its hard to drive. At full chat on my Motorola power its acceptable but not what youd call loud.
So you need an amp but it was fine on my topping nx4 so you dont need a powerhouse and it scales well.
And as far as negatives go, thats it.
If you wanna know what a good planar sounds like, just buy the PR2 and walk away, this is all you’re gonna need.
I have the P1,S12,Wu,Heyday and timeless and in term of my preference it’d be Heyday, Timeless, Wu, S12, P1 but in all honesty, apart from the P1 (which is a bit of an outlier) its no more than a coin toss between all of them.
The PR2 might graph very similarly to the Wu but it sounds more open and less dark than the Wu. It sounds closer to the Timeless and Heyday in term of presentation. YMMV of course.
Solid, articulate bass, inoffensive mids and a smooth treble…resolution is pretty good too.
The PR2 would sit with the Timeless in my listening which given its price is bonkers.
My, haven’t things come a looong way since the P1.!!
HBB is hitting home runs all over the park…   i salute you sir

Thanks! Glad you like em. Unless great planar start going into $20 (Chi fi could happen)
That’s the budget Planar with heyday being non budget.

1st 6000 sets had a different on driver dampening and after that it is circuit board and nozzle damp.
They could not make em fast enough by hand without some meshes not lining up perfectly.

Salute to whoever did that all day long for days. Filter on tiny driver, next, next next.
