Bad Guy Good Audio Reviews (A Million views?) Part 3/4

It has indeed been a good October after a brutal july/August.
Lotta stress …gone. Till the next correction

This project has been canceled.
The “add some bass” collabs are done.
(MD Blessing2 to Crin tweak, EJ07m to HBB tweak, those days are done)
It’s going to simply be a bass version of the existing set.
Love the brand but this wasn’t the way to go.
I have SN/001 and will review as a bass version and give it away. :100:

Audiophiles, traders, gamers - all in the same spot and all the same people lol. What a community

Meanwhile, today marks a week without any response from FatFreq. If I didn’t know, I would genuinely assume I simply got scammed. This beats any other customer support ‘experience’ I’ve ever had in my entire life. It’s impressive even lol.
I only get a generic auto message ‘we’ll be with you shortly or next day’, if at all. Both a week ago and today.
It has nothing to do with you, Chris, and you’ve nothing to apologize for. If anything, you’ve been beyond helpful, which I appreciate hugely.

Just wanted to give a quick update on my situation.

While I’m personally disappointed this is cancelled, (the shells look dope, and I was holding off ordering a Mega5Est in hopes of reviewing this one.) I can sort of get why you’d cancel it.

Iteration isn’t the same as innovation.

I’ll probably still pick up the bass boosted version if they sell it. I’ve been wanting to try an EST set, as well as getting a JM-1 inspired set. This would kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

I have no chance to demo anything, but I always watch tons of reviews and comparisons, browse reddit and such for bits and pieces of info.
Early on, through all research I realized that my sound preferences more or less align with yours nicely, and your channel is a solid place to start looking for things.
What completely solidified my respect for you as a reviewer and tuner was your treatment of HeyDay. Note that I haven’t heard the original tho. I was like ‘wait, he removed(!) quite a bit of bass from it, hm…’ I wanted to try a planar, and many others praised the natural tonality of HeyDay, so stars aligned and I went for it.

I always do a very thorough tip rolling, as I firmly believe it’s the biggest factor after the IEM itself.
And some tips brought more bass, but tamed the treble further at the same time, as well as stole some tiny details. And to me, it immediately threw off the exceptional feel of the set, and somewhat erased what I believe you were trying to achieve with that tuning. It is a benchmark set for me now and I listen to it for several hours almost daily. Spot on. And I also often bring out all sets I own, and listen to certain tracks and compare, find a lot of joy in this.

And it is great to see that you are not afraid to call collabs off if they don’t improve or change enough, and merely try to market their thing wider. Imo, keeps the space moving and prevents ‘add bass and call it a day’ from becoming too contagious and turning into normal.

Hey Omar, your review of Yu Xuan Ji just popped up on my YT timeline.
What an incredible work man, a gem.
Huuuge respect for bringing the music into the review. To me this is something that isn’t done nearly enough by reviewers and I don’t know why.
Comparisons are a great addition too.
And the cool wall? The Council of Ladies? That’s wonderful lol.
You’ve firmly earned a subscriber, will lurk around your channel.

Thanks a lot for the kind words and the sub! All said, I’m pretty new to the scene. I’ve been in the hobby for a year or so and back in the summer (with encouragement from my wife) I decided to see if I could try and make the transition from collector to reviewer.

My review style is based on a lot of reviewers that I watch and what I liked about their formats.

I’m here to have fun and talk about what sets sound like with my (admittedly eclectic and random) library.

Cool wall is of course, shamelessly stolen from Top Gear

As for the council of ladies, my wife told me I had terrible taste in fashion, so I farmed out the opinions on looks to her and some of our friends/family.

I might make my own thread on here at some point, but for right now I’m happy to mostly lurk and post occasional things.

Overall what I’d like to bring most to this hobby is positivity. In the end it’s all about enjoying your jams on whatever you like.

Definitely received a dose of positivity through your vid, mission accomplished lol.
Very well structured and didn’t feel like an almost 30 minute video at all.
Oh my library is beyond random too lol, I honestly feel some would find it psychopathic lmao. Just love it all.
Was great to see video game OST in your vid too, so many incredible gems in that music.

Please continue your great and thorough work with this fun presentation, and I will surely buy your collab one day :handshake:

hey man I also really enjoyed your reviews and I think you are one of the reviewers who has a similar library as me (basically a range of everything) that includes kpop jpop music. would you recommend s08, s12 pro or the aful explorer for these kind of genre? Just going by the graph I saw the s08 is basically the middle between explorer and s12 pro. My only concern with the s08 is if the female vocals and the instruments in my kpop musics would feel too warm and not energetic enough

It honestly depends on your preferred artists and how much emphasis you want on vocals vs the bands.

I mentioned this in my Aful Explorer review, but in terms of S08 vs Explorer, I tend to prefer vocal centric content on the S08. (Yoasobi, Claris, Ado), while more instrumental groups (nano.RIPE, ZAQ, Kishida Kyodan) I prefer on the Explorer.

As for the S12 pro, in terms of vocals I find it mostly similar to the S08, except in terms of harmonics. They’re a definitely more prominent than on the S08, and I find that can work well for some artists and not so well for others. It depends on your preference.

The S12 Pro can still be a little hot for some folks depending on your tolerance for that extra energy from 4.5-9KHz.

I personally don’t find female vocals or the midrange tonality to be husky or “warmed up” in any way. One of my favorite characteristics of the Planar driver.

I personally would go S08. But if you like that extra vocal harmonic emphasis, the S12 pro is a great choice.

Sorry if we’re off topic, or if it’s discouraged for other reviewers to answer questions in this thread. I’m relatively new here and don’t want to get in trouble.

I’ll make my own thread.

Apologies if I breached etiquette.

Editing just to say:
My Deuce tracking finally updated. It was picked up just now.

Not a problem. Open discussion is always welcome :v:

Yeah, it is a trap a bass lover like myself can fall into.
I have projects I concieved from step 1 . An add bass set is not the way. Love that company but they are better off without me :100:

Thank you for this! Do you feel the need to tip roll on the S08?

massive respect homie and I agree
I like how most collabs nowadays go where the guy they’re collabing with has really a ton of input on what they want

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m curious, do you think the S12 Pro’s extra harmonic emphasis might be a double-edged sword? I can see how it could enhance certain tracks but also clash with others. What do you think works best for heavier music genres?

I tend to use Spinfit CP145/100s for my audio comparisons, and the bulk of my testing. I do listen with the stock eartips to see if they’re better/worse than normal. I personally didn’t tip roll the S08, except to find out that the included “Vocal” tips live up to their name. I think they sound excellent with the stock “Balanced” tips or my CP145s

Plenty of people online and in my comments seem to say they’re tip-sensitive, so if you have a bunch of tips, I’d say go for it. I’ve seen a lot of positive comments for the Divinus Velvet Wide Bore. But I personally don’t prefer wide bore tips on this set.

For me personally, when there is more energy in the harmonics than the fundamentals, it can come off sounding very unnatural, especially for female vocals, feels like even sustained notes don’t decay properly. That said, there are genres like Opera, Theater, and some singers like Ado where that extra harmonic emphasis makes them sound a bit more superhuman and gives their voices a little more pizazz, despite being unrealistic. Tharja, the original singer from Nightwish comes to mind. Sometimes I’ll be in a mood for an older Nightwish album and specifically pull out something like the Moondrop Stellaris, which is shouty, AND has overblown harmonics hahaha.

Edit: Grammar

usually people use wide bore to enhance treble and subdue the bass a bit right? I also came across a guy on reddit that says basically only penon orange works for him. Problem is I only got a moondrop springtips that came with my og chu so might need to get me some different ones. I’m eyeing the triclarion or tangzu sancai for wide bore, penon orange and the kbear 07/08 which supposed to be a clone of acoustune 07/08

I’d say give your springtips and the stock tips a try before you start rip rolling. You might find you really dig the stock sound.

Now if you want to build up a collection of tips for trying out, go for it! Tip rolling can be a lot of fun!

And in my experience at least, wide bore tips tend to enhance higher frequencies and subdue lower ones.

On the topic of tips, you may know it already, but can’t hurt to share I think.
If you decide to buy some, make sure you get a various size pack. Always nice to have, in case of some hefty/smaller nozzles on certain sets.
Or if you’re going for just one size, take a ruler and measure a tip you know fits you nicely, and find the info on sizes of the tips you want to buy. Usually available right in the listing or on the website.
I was genuinely surprised to learn that they differ wildly one manufacturer to the next. An M size may turn out to be L or S with another brand lol. It’s wild.

Turns out the package I’d been tracking was something else. Still no movement on my FatFreq tracking number and nothing popping up for my carrier accounts on incoming pacakges. Beginning to get a little nervous, but let’s see if something shows up by the end of the week before I reach out.

Hi Deuce purchasers, which email did you use to reach out to the FatFreq? Cause I sent them an email about tracking for my Deuce through their service email 5 days ago and haven’t heard back from them.
