How are the Nighthawks, what do you think about them? Have you used Argons too, or just those? For fun listening and gaming, how would u say they perform (for example, three of my favorite songs are Watercolour by Pendulum, Oh Mama by RTJ, and Call Me by Czarface)
Well for gaming I have a mod mic hooked to them so they are my go to for that. I don’t do fast pace competitive gaming so take that as you would.
I haven’t had or tried the argons but what I can say is I don’t have the time to wait around for them to be built. I also haven’t had anything that has impactful bass like NHs. Argons might, doubtful but might.
The songs you mention, watercolour sounds impactful but when everything drops it seems like detail is missing, Salt in the wounds sounds all there.
Oh mama you will love these the kick drum in the beginning is great, I also like call ticketron and Panther like a panther for the NHs.
Call me mid bass is overwhelming but voices are still very sperated from the mid bass.
I’ve been listening to more detailed hps lately so voicals sound recessed but once your ears adapt everything sounds right. Also if I pull power away and vocals come out more on them.
Now that I think about it I think the Dan Clark Audio Aeon Flow Retuned might be a better HP for an all-arounder. Still have great bass with clarity and still sperated like the NHs. Plus you don’t have to search around for them.
Aeons are fantastic but those aren’t in the $300 range
Very true forgot about the price point. Even then I’d probably save the pennies for it cause of the availability.
I’m confused at how you consider the 770 80hms to be be on the bass shy side. They have some of the strongest bass I’ve heard on a headphone. 4XX/400i is significantly lower in quantity. The only thing I’ve heard with more bass is the monoprice retro’s with brainwavez XL pads on them for around $50 total. But their imaging is going to be far behind.
I can retest them in a few minutes, and the only thing I can think of is that I wasn’t giving them enough power/listening to them too quietly, but I’ll relisten to some of my favorite bass heavy songs on them and the 4XX, but from my memory, even with the sheepskin pads I’ve put on them, the bass of the 4XX seems more impactful/significant.
I figured it out. For some reason, I find that it is much easier for my ears to listen to the 4XX at slightly to significantly louder volumes than on my 770’s. It might be because of the Beyer treble peak I’ve vaguely heard about, or maybe even just the nature of closed backs, but it is just not comfortable at higher volumes, and my amp can make them go LOUD (like most acceptable amps because of the lower output requirement). The 770’s have more bass quantity with a little more rumble (because closed back) but the 4XX’s sound more impactful (the only word I can use), so in combination with the louder volume, sound better to me on bassier songs. I still enjoy my 770’s, though.
I think you would know if you were reacting to that treble peak. DT 770s can sound pretty sharp, more so if paired with an amp that doesn’t deal well with that peak. DT 770s are plenty bassy but I find they sound a little odd… It wasnt till I looked at the frequency that I noticed.
It’s those dips I was hearing in the frequency just kinda threw me off… and the 250 ohm I found seemed to sound like that drop off point there in the frequency was even worse. Caused me to not really like the headphone in general. I found the 177x go to be phenomenal though alongside the dt 990s, tygrs and mmx 300 for bass
