Beyerdynamic DT 880 600/250ohms [purchase advice]

Hi guys

At the moment I have a Sennheiser HD 6XX, I am not very happy with them for music and mainly gaming due to their sound and imaging. So I am thinking about buying a Beyerdynamid DT 880 and my doubt is which one to buy. Right now I have an e10k amp/dac and I can hear the 6xx perfectly and the wheel is below half. From what I’ve seen the best version of the DT 880 is the 600ohms version, my idea for now was to keep the e10k fiio. Should I go for the 250 or 600ohms version? Thank you

Yep the 600ohm is the one to go for but the E10k will struggle to drive them fully so the 250’s would be the smart choice even that could do with a bit more :muscle: tbh.

I have the exact same two headphones and I like the 6XX a little better. I agree that I think you might not be happy with the way the e10k will drive a 600ohm DT880. My feeling is that with volume at max you’ll get about 90% of where you want. I’m currently planning a pad swap to see if I can get any more bass out of my DT880s; I don’t like too much but I feel they just have none compared to 6XX.

I will probably go for the 250 ohm version, my idea was to keep the e10k at least for now and I’m afraid to risk it on the 600 ohm version

I have the HD600 and HD650 as well as the DT880 600 ohms. I prefer the Sennheisers. The 880s has remarkable clarity and detail retrieval, but they’re a touch too bright for my ears, have less bass, and just feel like there’s less body. I respect the 880s enough to qualify this by saying I don’t think the Beyers are inferior to the Senns, it’s just a question of taste. Needless to say, while I do put on the Beyers from time to time, I always go back to the Sennheisers. By the way, I mostly run the Beyers on a Magni 2. Does the job really well.

the e10k definitely doesnt have enough power for the 600 ohm but should get the 250 ohm to a good volume level

I have the exact same opinion, at the moment about my 6XXs vs DT880-600. I drive both with the Emotiva A-100.
I am trying a pad swap on my DT-880’s though. I hope it doesn’t ruin the fidelity but I’m hoping it may add just a tad more bass and they’d be my favorites ever.

A tube amp works wonders on the dt880 in these areas

A tube amp works well with both headphones lol, would be a solid investment

By the way, I think Z’s latest review of the 600 ohns is hyperbolic. The cans are good, but not that good, and like I said, I run them fine off a Magni 2.

Hyperbolic? I’m shocked lol. But I thought he reviewed the 880 ages ago. Maybe that was the 250?

I do really like them, but their not for everyone and imo for a budget amp, a liquid spark or magni 3+ will drive them just fine

Yes, the 250. But he just did a new one. I’m glad he did. He was too dismissive the first time. But now he’s gone too far to the other extreme. He’s also inadvertently revealed that the Magni can beat the fancy 789 thing he’s got. Actually, if I remember correctly, my SMSL AD18 also pushed them ok.

which review is this can I have a link cause I can only find th eold 600 ohm and the 250 ohm review from 2 years ago.

It might only be up on the Patreon now. Appeared yesterday. It will come out soon.

ah ok makes sense hopefully he does more revisits.

your talking about Z here. the man is know for his hyperbolic statements I could name a few but to be honest I think we all kinda know at least some statements already

Imo the new magni heresy matches or exceeds the performance of thx amps in many ways

I’m sold on the Schiits as value propositions. I just wish the Modi came with a BT module. Then I’d buy a stack. I need that BT.

I wish they revamped the modi, in current state it’s not really good whatsoever imo, their more recent bifrost 2 is excellent for the price, and I wish they would update the modi so it would be a viable stack again imo
