šŸ”¶ Beyerdynamic DT880 600Ī©

I think the 250ohm and 600ohm are pretty similar as far as I know. Iā€™ve only heard the 600ohm versions so I donā€™t know for myself but other people have said the differences is that the 250ohm is more sibilant and a bit slower in the bass.

I see thanks for the input, well itā€™s not surprising since the 600Ohm version is the one who is getting a lot of praises from users who used that version. I would buy one if I only could afford it and I am going to need have a good AMP for it in order to power up, but so far I am happy with my 250Ohm version along with my Topping NX3s Portable Amp.

Thatā€™s pretty accurate.

Zach of ZMF suggests using amps with higher output impedance over something like an RNHP, which is a nearly zero output impedance. Itā€™s an important factor when pairing headphones with an amp.

FWIW this is not how damping factor works, the 8x rule is just a guideline and itā€™s intended to be a minimum.

Iā€™ve seem people (including amp designers) claim a damping factor of at least 4 or 8 or even 20 are desirable.

Damping factor is just the ratio of load/output impedance, itā€™s a measure of how well an amplifier can control a transducer, generally higher is better, there is nothing wrong with a damping factor of 100 or 1000 for that matter.

There are other factors involved in loads with tube amps, because in typical designs loads are reflected and are a part of the actual amplification circuit.

Dampening factor would be
300 Ohm / 36 Ohm = 8.33

Note that ā€œdampening factorā€ is based on impedance (AC circuit), not resistance (DC circuit).

Just for accuracyā€¦
Damping factor calculated by
Dividing the HP impedance on
The output impedance of the amp
ā€¦
The idea is that power delivering
Effeciency increases when the impedances of both amp and HP
Become close in value ā€¦
Preferebly in audio systems
The HP or speaker impedance
should be 8 times the impedance
Of the amp to avoid change and
Distorstion in sound signature.

Hey guys Just wanted to share the balanced mod on my DT880s. These are 250 ohms so sorry for posting this in the 600 ohm section. But im so happy with how they turned out I just had to share with you guys just in case anyone was considering getting them balanced. I highly recommend it. u/Demevalos has an etsy store where you can purchase his service. If this isnā€™t allowed I apologize in advanced. I am just so happy with how it turned out I wanted to share with you all.

So, how do they sound out of your LP?

I donā€™t think this forums has rules. It all relies on people behaving.

I assume Hart Audio cables?

so all i know is you dont need the insane amount of power but you also need a strong output impedence for these high ohm headphonesā€¦

is it just for 600 ohm headphones or would this be a factor for things like the 250 ohm or a 300 ohm headphone

Bingo, you are correct on the Hart Audio cables.

I just got both the LP and the DT880s in today. So im still getting used to the pairing. It definitely smooths out those highs and so far im loving it. I also modded the Tygrs but iā€™ll save those for tomorrow.

Super specific question, I know Zeos is either toying with the idea or maybe has at this point, done the mod to balance his 880s. Want I want to know is once thatā€™s done, how it sounds out of the A90. Cause theyā€™re better with my Emotiva than my SP200, but I can sort of tell that theyā€™d actually be as good as he says they are if they were THX clean with, for all intents and purposes, weā€™ll call adequately powered (not just loud enough). Iā€™m not sure heā€™s tried them SE with the SP200, but I get that he doesnā€™t like them out of the 789, but the SP200 is 2.2x more powerful than the 789 SE at 600 ohms so I think that probably matter some.

When I had the a90 in, I had my 880 balanced modded, and while I didnā€™t think they sounded that great single ended on that amp, balanced on the a90 was def nicer sounding imo. Still not my preference for the 880 but if the a90 is your main amp and you like the 880 alot, the balance mod might be worthwhile imo

Whatā€™s your favorite amp for the 880/600 with the balance mod?

Dangerous question to ask M0Nā€¦

What price range? Going to keep it under 500 for now, also this is just stuff that I like that comes to my head atm (so not complete lol). Honestly in the more budget range I really like the asgard 3 (for something warmer neutral slightly smoother but still pretty impactful and detailed) and going up a bit the lake people g111 (for more studio reference or neutral, lots of control) and rnhp (for a very natural yet neutral sound overall) were very solid (all without needing to be balanced lol). For tubes, the bottlehead crack + speedball is a very enjoyable combo and really just lots of fun to listen to, and the hagerman tuba was pretty neutral and refined but still a pretty enjoyable listen with the 880.

I personally wouldnā€™t go for a budget balanced amp since it will really just cost you more than itā€™s worth imo, but if you are looking for something balanced, in the same performance vein as the g111 and rnhp, the liquid platinum is very fun for width slam and a warmer more colored signature. TBH I donā€™t have much to say here because I think that there arenā€™t many balanced amps under 500 that I greatly prefer over the single ended options I have mentioned so far (the ones I would mention over the price range easily)

For what I use personally, there are alot lol, but many make 0 sense to buy only for a 880 lol so idk if they are worth a mention

Thanks, Iā€™m not quite ready to step up to the LP just yet (tubes scare me! LOL) but Iā€™m hoping that Schiit will have something new (coming soon?:crossed_fingers:) and balanced to stack with their Modius that will be around the $300 - 400 range. (Jotunheim 2.0?)

Iā€™ve already ordered the Asgard 3 along with the Topping E30 to upgrade my current setup (Thanks @Falenkor!! =) but I havenā€™t received it yet. Hopefully that will be enough to satisfy my upgrateitusā€¦

Itā€™s not that big of a deal lol, the LP is a hybrid and isnā€™t really fussy or anything

That would be nice to see

Solid setup :+1:
