only one way to find out, order them and try out

For what it’s worth. The DT880 600 come with silver pads that are squishier/softer than the silver pads on my dt770 pros, if you’re looking for similar sound but less compression in the pads 770 pro pads could work. (I know they look the same but there is a firmness difference at least on my pairs ymmv)

Do you run your amp on low or high gain with the dt880 600 ohm headphones? I have an asgard 3. Some people have told me low and some have said high so just trying to figure out what most people say and then do that. I am new to audiophile stuff.

Definitely high gain, with volume at approximately noon (depending on source volume level).

DT880-600 is going to be a high-gain experience on damn near anything.

I bought Dekoni Choice Suede pads for these and I really love them now

DT880 600ohm have a maximum power handling of 100mw and it sounds best from high impedance output sources (100 ohm or higher). It sounded much worse from multi-watts amps with low input impedance. If it sounds great to you, just ignore my post or the guy who tested 880 600ohm with 10 amplifiers or so.

These headphones do love power. Last week was the best they ever sounded to me.
New-to-me amp, the iFi Pro I CAN. X-bass and 3D engaged, in high gain with the volume around 10-11 via a 1/4" Jack. I was using tube mode.

DEEP bass (when the song called for it), great vocals and strings with no undue brightness.

I had been thinking about selling these, but that won’t be happening now.

But isn’t that due to quality power rather than more power? Most people were left with the impression that the basX was needed to drive these properly. Which it doesn’t. Others has said the 880 does scale really well ( not something I can comment on ).

DT880’s ability to scale up with source gear is nuts. It and the HD600/650/6xx are amazing in how they just keep showing you more and more as you move up.

Agreed. I thought the Violectric serviced them well, but all their best features really stood out with the more powerful/feature-filled amp.
This is a very nice amp. I loved my favourite two 'phones on it, but I like them on everything.

I then ran my Senns on them. The HD6XX’s underwhelmed me yet again and will be leaving my possesion soon. The HD660’s were fine and I liked them as I usually do.

Then I put on the DT880’s and was Very impressed. X-bass and 3D really filled them out nicely. It is an odd coupling, price wise, but the sparks fly between them.

Yesterday I started with the LCD-2 Classics and was again very impressed.

Pretty sure on an older post it was Mon and someone else that said they get even better or different on high current amplifiers. That would be something to check out if you can. For me I’d just like to get a decent tube amp for them but that will take some doing. Also been wanting to give the zen dac a try as WaveTheory had suggested. But all that is on hold until I finish my 2 channel cause it’s been way too long since I have owned a stereo system.

I don’t recall mentioning something like that, the 880 wants mainly voltage not current

I would just say they sound best out of quality amps, and quality of the amp’s power is more important than the quantity it can output after a certain threshold

Ahh
so it was volts , sorry about that. Thanks for the clarification.

Does anyone have experience with pad swapping on the DT880s?
I got a pair of Brainwavz microsuedes instead of Zeos’ recommended Dekoni choice suedes due to cost, but it turned too boomy and muddied the bass for me.
Any recommendations for any other pads I could try to maybe preserve the brighter sound signature?

When switching to the suedes, make sure to remove the circular pad in front of the driver. I find that gives the lushness of the suede, but prevents things from being muddied. My experience is with Dekoni thought no BW. To get that part out you need to remove the plastic ring holding the driver in place. So of course proceed with care.

The Dekoni Suedes did the exact same thing, hence I hated it, you just can’t rely on Zeos’s ears for anything

if someones trying to preserve the brightness of the 880
it definitely wouldnt be using leathers or suedes lol these are known to drop the treble quite a lot. Though you can remove the filter to make sure its cleared up for those pads
it still will drop the treble
best to use a perforated, hybrid, or of course velour

Thanks for your help.

I just tried this out, it’s a significant improvement! But now it sounds brighter than the original tuning so treble sensitive people beware

you removed the main tuning foam off the 880s themselves? yeah this is well known to dramatically increase a beyers brightness
I know a few people who actually cut that thin foam piece off the dekoni pad but keep the thicker foam insert that comes with the beyer. This same effect is seen especially on headphones like the T1 3rd generation and the Tygr 300r where removing their foam piece drastically increases the treble
