šŸ”¶ Beyerdynamic DT880 600Ī©

It may be due to the internal DAC. Itā€™s known to be a little lower voltage than what an external DAC typically supplies. That said, I use an external DAC and my experience isnā€™t far off from yours. High gain, 50% volume is a good level for me.

Okay actually I take it back - Didnā€™t realize where the volume started.

Iā€™m listening comfortably at about 4-5 oā€™clock - I feel like I shouldnā€™t be able to max it out this easily

On Modius > A3 > DT880-600 Iā€™m pretty sure I couldnā€™t be comfortable at that point. I would generally be a bit short of max (usually 3-3:30) on my Modi3/Magni3

I believe if you dig into this issue (built-in A3 DAC, lower max output) I think youā€™ll find a theme through anecdotal evidence. One of the reasons Iā€™ll echo the external DAC idea for it.

That said, 600Ī© is a somewhat extreme case for any amp. That youā€™re pushing it to max is still a win overall.

But, I wonder if anyone has ever done output testing on this amp with the built-in DACs vs external feed. I should look at Schiitā€™s own testing docs.

If you had a budget of around $300 or so for the amp and dac which would you get to drive the dt880 600 ohm for fps gaming and rock music? Is the Asgard 3 and Modi 3 the way to go here? I am in the US.

A3 and the modius is a good match for the dt880 600ohm. It is about 400$

Thanks! Would the Modi 3+ DAC at $100 be good too? I was hoping to spend a little less than $400.

Asgard 3 and topping E30 is also a very nice stack for the dt880 600 ohms

I run this stack daily with dt880ā€™s and itā€™s great. Iā€™ve not compared to higher end stacks (ie Bifrost 2), so I donā€™t know ā€œwhat Iā€™m missingā€. But Iā€™m sure not disappointed.

I have this stack! Iā€™m pretty interesting in expanding my headphone collection so Iā€™m definitely looking at these headphones in interest

Yes. Also the recs on E30 youā€™re getting are good, though that is a bit more $.
I would choose from the world of $100 DACs based on form-factor and features as much as anything.

Thanks! I ordered the DT880 600 ohm headphones and I am planning to get the asgard 3 amp and modius dac to drive it from my PC for gaming and rock music. What cords would you recommend I use to connect it all? Is there anything else I will need?

Youā€™ll need RCA interconnect cables, if you donā€™t mind the cable dangling in the back these ones are good, if you want shorter cables check out these.

Donā€™t know if this has been mentioned before butā€”I highly recommend people trying Oratory1990ā€™s EQ with the DT880s, it adds bass and warms up the sound a bit without sounding artificial, helps with treble (especially with listening to poorly mastered music). EQ for New Earpads / EQ for Worn Pads

Thanks I will look into those.

What ear pads are a good replacement?

Iā€™m not a big fan of the stock ear pads. I tried Brainwavz round XL earpads but they sound horrible. I never had ear pads change the sound this horribly before, makes the sound very booming and echoic like a speaker that is turned up too loud.

What donā€™t you like about them?

The general consensus is that stock works best. They do have the standard grey pads but also make black, its not quite the same as stock grey, but it could be worth a try for you.

Personally I like the Deknoi Suedes on these. It darkens the tone, makes it a bit lush, but not boomy or anything like that. The 10k spike is of course still there, but I find it better balanced for my liking.

Choice suede from Dekoni works best for me

basically what I donā€™t like about most stock ear pads.

They are not very thick and the ring is not very wide either. They flatten quickly and my ear rests against the inner fabric that covers the speaker area.

also the silver ones that come with it get dirty quickly, so I have to buy replacement anyways.

How long have you owned the dt880? Idk how much thicker you can get with the dekonis. But like with your experience with the brainwaves, different pads do change the sound. From memory the black Beyer pads may be a little thicker and stiffer
