Think I will just leave mine stretched out for the next couple days while being burned in as wellā¦ Itās a bit rough for me to wear right now considering the discomfort I have from the clamp and stiff pads. Try to give this one at least a good week burn in before I really have some concrete opinion on it.
Yea I have been stretching mine a bit each day. I think it has helped some. Also using the velour pads helps too.
I havenāt tried really listening a lot to the dekoni veloursā¦ just some brief listensā¦ I plan to do that laterā¦ I figure after some stretching and break in the bass will probably be less aggressive as well. I was surprised at just how much impact this headphone has compared to the T1.2 which is more rounded off
Yea I do like the bass control in this headphone. It is pretty solid.
Thank you!
Was just reading this thread on hi-fi: Beyerdynamic T1 3rd Gen out now | Page 39 | Headphone Reviews and Discussion - Head-Fi.org
The reviewer emails Mr. Guntar Weidemann to ask about the dampening on the headphone, here is what was saidā¦
In the meantime I have had an email-conversation with Mr. Gunter Weidemann, the Senior Product Manager at Beyerdynamic. I was just puzzled with the dampening pads and why the T1 sounds so much better without them, to my ears that is. I had to get an answer to that. As Gunter pointed our, my reference sound today is what I would call neutral from ER-4XR and DT-1770 Pro. Studio monitor sound. Nothing added to the music, just played as it is on the recording. As Gunter explained DT-1770 has a completely other purpose than the T1.3. Where I am used to listen to a professional device made to analyse recordings the T1.3 has another purpose. In Gunter Weidemanns words: ā the new T1 and T5 are positioned as āTrue masterpieces for your musical enjoyment at homeā, with a carefully tuned sound signature especially for this kind of application. ā
I mean, you can tell they changed teh sound as it still isnāt fully identical to the 2nd generation by removing those filtersā¦ it does get close however. Itās a nice headphone I am just not sure if it quite truly strikes the āthis headphone is truly worth $1000ā area for me lol
Glad you posted this though this is a nice readā¦ what he got during this is pretty on point to what I am hearingā¦ granted I wouldnāt say the bass is -too- impactful its nice yet different. I am just not used to the aggression and overall attack of the bass. I will say this after sitting with it for the dayā¦ those dampeners and this new tuning practically completely destroys it for competitive gamingā¦ too much darkness, not enough on the upper mids, soundstage alterations is a negative, and that bass is far to much. Youād have to take the dampeners out for competitives. I think it comes down to my thought process ofā¦ well its $1k but does it beat out say someone just buying a cheaper 2nd gen T1 + like a tygr or nighthawk carbon? saving themselves like $400+. Granted I donāt think a lot of people are going to want to consistently remove the dampening and reapply it consistently lol
Yea this is what I have been asking myself. I guess I am trying to understand the idea behind this headphone. Cause reading that interview and the comments from Mr. Gunter Weidemann, if they are trying to target folks who will just pickup the headphone are not more use to per say āstudio headphonesā as he put itā¦ I think those same folks would ask, why is this 1k? I think for most folks who donāt pay that much attention to what they put on their ears are ok with spending $100 - $200. $300 is where most would draw the line and say itās getting expensive. Also reading the FAQ for this headphone on āwhatās with the priceā it seems more to do with the build and the cable. Which I am kinda shaking my head at asā¦ āuhā¦ ok maybe a littleā¦ but not that muchā
This kinda leaves me thinking. I can leave the dampening out which IMO they sound better, but I feel like I am then tuning it more to some of the headphones I already have. Idkā¦ need to think on this purchase a bit more. Itās not to say the sound isnāt good, itās like you said, I think there might be better options at a much lower cost.
Thatās a bogus excuse considering the T1.2 and 1990 are close to equal in terms of build materialsā¦ and 2nd gen uses the same cabling yet is much cheaper.
oh most definitely agreed, I am quite unsure how he figures that a more consumer friendly headphone should be at 1k. Most people are uncomfortable spending this much I know I sure as hell am. With Covid going on this definitely doesnāt help that case either. The headphone doesnāt particularly scream anything specialā¦ I can get an lcd-2 for cheaper with this signature and find close to the same enjoymentā¦ nighthawks may not be as good as this but they are still fantastic and you can find those at $200. The reason the 2nd gen was amazing is that the signature was incredibly unique. Granted this one is unique as the lows and mids both sound raised and only the treble and upper mids sound dark I have a hard time justifying its out of gate pricetag. Perhaps this is another one like the Focal Clear where I believe this is just way to much considering what it has to offer.
this is my thoughts on it as wellā¦ I leave the dampener in and its respectively close to my audeze or nighthawk enjoyable but I am left thinkingā¦ well I already have this kind of signature in my collection. I pull out the dampener and I am left with a signature closer to the 2nd genā¦ which again, I already have. Granted an LCD - 2 + T1.2 is definitely over $1k but still. LCD-2 I still think, as of current, beats this in terms of dark signatures the speed, the slam, the control, the clarity, the richness of the sound. I am a bit on the fence here the more I listen to it.
Itās a bit of a gamble honestly. I am definitely going to give it some time but I am rather conflicted as I typically am when it comes to the much more expensive brackets in this hobby. Price does by no means dictate how good a headphone is and in quite a lot of cases I found that the price definitely wasnāt worth while especially in AKGās case over there. I think it really boils down to a bit of sacrificeā¦ do you want a more perfectly tuned headphone with that very specific unique soundā¦ or do you want t otake a step back accept a bit more error in the tuning yet save $500
Not sure if anyone is really able to test this here yet, but I would be very interested in how these scale. With the t1.2, the better you give it the better it gets (well this is the case with most headphones but this is one tends to give larger returns than others), I wonder if by making it more easy to drive and more consumer friendly in terms of power, they ended up handicapping how much more you can get out of it with higher end electronics (which for me imo would decrease the value proposition)
Too much power causes some issues it seems. It gets loud but it doesnāt particularly gain better sound. I tried using my balanced setup with Liquid Platinum + bifrost 2(I already own T1.2 balanced cables) and of course the SE asgard 3 which has a lot of power as well. The sound gets better but I definitely wouldnāt say itās remotely close to just how much scaling the 600 ohm T1.2 is capable of. If anything it just adopts the traits of the amp albeit not by a large degreeā¦ Even tubes while adding warmth arenāt the most noticeable in changes to my ear right now. Granted @Rick_Jones has a darkvoice I only have LP in house right now
Just seems like one of those that isnāt particularly amp picky in this case. The only thing so far that sounds bad to my ear is something that adds to much warmth and treble rolling
Very interesting stuff, gotcha good to know
I will continue to do some more checking as the week progresses. Like I said, I want to check to see if things change after around 150 hours burn in. I am going to head to the audio shop with this later, after about 100 hours of burn in, and test some amps as well.
Yea the little bit of time I have tested with it, not sure I prefer it. Seeing as it is adding a smidgen more warmth, which it doesnāt really need.
Thatās what I got out of the LP. It just doesnāt change its signature much at all changing the amps so far from my experience. Reminds me of how the Amiron acts when you change its gear.
I guess one can see this as positive in some cases? Means you donāt really need one of the very high tier setups to bring this thing to its ābestā sound. Personally, I see this as a bit of a negative valuepoint like M0N said
Well, thatās one good thing I can say so farā¦ I let the headphone stretch on itās box since last night while burning in. I think the mids have cleaned up a little which is nice but least now I can actually wear itā¦ seems it doesnāt take much stretching to break these inā¦ granted these pads are firm as hell. These are those kind of pads I would expect from the more closed back beyers meant for isolation my guess would be that as these pads break down a little more this headphone will lose some of itās bass. The less clamping force from breaking it in did lessen up the bass a little too so its not attacking my ears as much
But i mean, am I going to get rid of this headphone? No, it was a gift and I would feel bad besides, the headphone is quite lovely. The main thing I see wrong with it is the bass impact may be much for some, the impedance is definitely a lacking spot as it doesnāt respond as much to different hardware currently, its $1000 and may have some subjectively better yet cheaper competition. Personally, I am not quite sure why they kept this duel sided cabling as I donāt really hear any big differences between balanced and SE so if anything they couldāve gone single ended cable.
I have tried this in gaming so far. Gotta say with dampeners this thing is dreadfully bad in competitive but awesome for casual. I have been playing DOOM ETERNAL with this headphone and its dampenersā¦ the sound signature is quite fantastic for such an explosive deep sounding game
Edit: well that and I was feeling like listening to some rock today so I have been cranking out to some Scorpions and Metallica since this morning.
Yea I do enjoy this headphone when playing some WoW and for watching movies. Ohā¦ and listening to some OST, like Tron Legacy I can say sounds really good.
Yea I was listening to some old classical rock, like Boston - More than a feeling, it sounded good. And listening to Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight (2015 Remaster edition) was really great when the drums came in.
Havenāt tried movies but considering how the sound is I would imagine quite niceā¦ I think the word I am thinking of is āthickā in terms of audiophile terminology which is something the other beyers really donāt have. The mids are noticeably āthickā with a rich full low end. (yay for being new to complicated terminologies lol).
Also, WoW? Nope I play Final Fantasy 14. I quit WoW I think it wasā¦ 2 or 3 expansions ago. Granted WoW Definitely has better pvp and skill flow. I prefer the soundtrack more in FF than WoW
yeah it sounds great for these genresā¦ I tried some more classical though or more string based songs(nier soundtrack even) and it just doesnāt cut it. Took out the dampeners and that sounded a hell of a lot better for the other genresā¦ It feels like its an all rounder but the caveat is you have to be willing to take out the dampeners lol. wish you could just put out the inserts instead of take off the pad pop off the snap in plastic then remove the filter extra steps.
So I have installed the dampening filter and have had it this way for a few days. I can say I am getting more comfortable with the sound of these headphones. It seems it just takes some time to get used to the sound signature. I am starting to hear the width of the soundstage a bit more now than when I first put them on and also the detail. Think this is that āmentalā burn-in @M0N has spoken of several times.
I have been running this headphone exclusively nowā¦ Still got a few more days of burn in before I have my thoughts together on it. I got a visit to the audio place on wednesday so that should be interesting I would think? I donāt knowā¦ all my amps and dacs are barely changing the sound to this one.
Take it you will have some words about this one as well soon enough Rick?
The mental burn in is definitely a thing. Normal burn in so far really hasnāt changed much at all, well nothing that I couldnāt probably write off as mental burn in or a kind of placebo effect.
