đŸ”¶ Beyerdynamic TYGR 300 R

I choose the T1.2nd too. I am leaning towards the dt990 pro instead of the tygr

Depends on if you want a warm relaxed headphone or a very aggressive very sharp V signature headphone. I like both .

Falenkor already picked up a Helios

Oh, well that’s completely my bad then, didn’t realize. Thanks for letting me know.

No worries
was in a different thread

Lol, did I miss something? was preoccupied.

Yeah, currently sitting down with it now actually. Still auditioning it.

I was just suggesting a trade you could do with ant, but I now know you already have the helios which voids the whole purpose of the trade.

Ah, alright then. Nah, I do believe @Antpage2 had at one time considered throwing a pair at me for audition or something but nah. I ended up finding them with a good return policy and decided to take the shot at them and audition. Going to give them a solid review myself. Right now it’s going to be a half and half review as I get accustomed to them. I plan to try to give these a solid week, they are enjoyable but I am noticing some changes as I go and I have a few complaints on it right now so we will see as I go. Really wish I had a pair of proper velours to pad swap to in order to change, as I hate suede pads personally.

hey @Falenkor have you tried any different pads on the tygr’s yet?

I tried other beyer pads, dekoni elite velours, and brainwavz perf XL. I found the pads that are already on them to sound the best though I have been tempted to try dekoni choice or sheepskin but I don’t have them in house at this current moment. Suede I assume will work well if your a fan of suede. The perfs made them actually sound slightly darker and brought up the bass a bit more. It uses what looks to be a design very similar to that of the T1 pad.

Yeah a lot of people including DMS say the stock pads seem to be the best. My only issue with them which isn’t really a much of a issue is my stupid large ears are just a smidge larger than the inner dimensions on the stock pads. I notice them making contact and can’t really ignore it but at the same time it doesn’t hurt so I can’t really complain. Only other pads I have on hand that fit were ZMF Auteur lambskin pads that I use on my he4xx but they just made the tygrs sound really muffled/muddy. I’ll just stick with the stock pads and be happy with what I have, the tygr’s are definitely my favorite pair of headphones I’ve owned so far. I’m terrible with audiophile terms so I can’t really review them personally but I can give them a thumbs up at least for anyone still looking to get them.

I mean, I am new to the terms myself but I would like to think I gave them a pretty fair review? Not a streamer or anything lol. I think I briefly touched on the pads up above somewhere dunno I don’t feel like digging through.

This is one of the issues I found even when equalizing the bass. It seems to have just the right balance in it’s bass to where it’s not muffled or muddy.

That is an issue. It’s mainly due to the inside design of the pad itself if you look at the image I posted or just remove the pad it has all those holes in the back of the pad. Any form of more solid pad is going to alter the sound and probably not for the best. Dekoni Elite Velour was decently alright but even then I wouldn’t recommend it. Beyers are pretty picky on their pad swaps to begin with which is rather unfortunate.

Very glad to hear you enjoy the headphone though. I really do think it’s a fantastic headphone and definitely great that beyer put this out there since a lot of people I have met just can’t stand that brightness
 these are a great alternative.

Going to second this as someone who owns, or has auditioned, practically the entire beyer lineup. Mainly for casual gamers though just a bit of a warning on that. Hardcore competitive gamers won’t find as much enjoyment in this one stick to your dt 880. I have recieved a couple PM’s from people asking me if I still have these or if I still recommend them. I will definitely say yes if this sound signature sounds like it appeals to you.

Something to note here that I noticed while tinkering with some equalization is that this is where I thought I found that “Clarity issue”. The issue here isn’t so much clarity as much as it sounds slightly muffled or like theirs a filter over the sound in some cases. Upon raising this part of the frequency though, warning this will make it brighter, It became much more comfortable to my ears and cleaned up the sound to the point it didn’t sound so off to me personally, though your experience may vary. Just thought it was something I should touch on.

I think your review was pretty accurate and helpful I can kind of understand most of what reviewers are saying when describing headphones I just can’t describe them myself yet. That probably doesn’t make a lot of sense but it’s the best way I can explain it lol. Anyways don’t wanna derail this thread from the awesome headphones it’s about anymore so I’ll stop talking about pads and how I’m a audio noob now.

I am going to post this here too.

I know is the tygr thread. Just to compare the dt990 pro I post here. I don’t like the black pads on the dt990 pro all black compared to the silver ones.I decided to buy the beyerdynamic silver pads to try them. Falenkor said before, the black pads add more booming bass. The are stiffer. The silver ones are more comfortable and softer. The silver pads disappear in your head, with the black you could feel them in your head. Also, the “Brand new” silver pads are shallow, they seem like ones you find when you buy a used beyerdynamic from ebay, except the brownish discoloration LOL. This is not the first time i tried the silver pads, I used to have the dt880 600ohm all black edtition. I swap pads with my dt990 pro silver pads a few months ago. Same impression with the pad swapping.

Sound wise, it seems the black pad add more sound stage which make the bass resonate more which could cause the boom. With the silver pads it sound cleaner, more open and brighter.

Have anyone tried the silver pads on the tygr?

Figured I would touch more on this here instead as this is relatively relevant to the tygrs. The dt 990s pads black and silver are different. 990s have a pair of black pads that are fairly more firm in comparison to the soft pads of the silver. However, this is not to be mistaken for the dt 880 special edition which was also in black as this particular headphone was in a different tune, the treble is different as is the bass. In the case of the tygr the pads may be black but they appear to be extremely identical to the thick silver softer pads to the point they vanish off my head. I have tried it myself and the difference may be a placebo effect but it does appear to make the tygrs ever so slightly brighter and more open like mentioned.

Sound wise from my experience the headphone that appears to change the most with that pad swap is the 990 which is odd
as for the 880 and tygr the differences are fairly negligible especially on the tygr where I just barily notice any difference at all
it could very well be the same pad just painted black instead of silver in the tygrs case.

I will say something though about beyerdynamic which I have found odd. I have ordered on 3 seperate occasions a dt 990. Whether it was a gift an audition or my own purchase. Outside of that I ordered 2 sets of black pads alongside them. The black pads came in the same but the silvers did not which was odd
my first dt 990 was extremely soft plush just like my tygrs pads it disappeared off my head and this was my audition copy it felt a bit thicker. It wasn’t till I got the second dt990 that I noticed a difference the pads felt slightly more shallow and firmer and still had the silver pads I attributed it to may just needing broke in. The third dt 990 I bought however went right back to the really soft pads
I am fairly curious if this is an odd issue in quality control on the pads or something. So far when it has came to beyers pads it’s been rather inconsistent

Edit: so I went back and tried them again on the tygrs. Took off the silvers on my 990 placed them on the tygr. I really don’t hear much of a difference other than it sounds ever so slightly brighter but just barily and the comfort is virtually identical. I wouldn’t bother with this particular pad swap in this case the black pads on the tygrs seem to be just fine. Feel free to try it yourself.

I did pad swapping with the tygr same effect.
“New” silver pads bought from amazon (beyerdynamic) are the softest and shallowest.Sound became to bright and forward with both headphones.
Black pads from tygr. Softer and not as firm as the pads that came with th dt990 pro black. Sound more balance a little boost in bass, not bright nor forward.
Black pads from dt990 pro. hardest and firmest from the 3. The bass became booming in a good way.
In conclusion, not happy with my “newly” purchase pads.

I mean, it’s still interesting. Not quite sure what beyer was thinking with those harder black pads lol. I did try the black pads from tygr on my dt 990 though they actually are pretty damn nice I will give them that not as bright and a little more thump from the bass
not by much but a welcome addition as I like the look of the black pads more.

I’m fairly new to the audiophile world and have been testing out the TYGR 300 R alongside the DT 990 Edition 250 ohm. I’m using the Soundblaster G6 for my amp/dac. I’m honestly torn on which pair I want to keep. It’s definitely a price to value comparison for me. I got the TYGR with the mic bundle as open box on eBay for $279. The 990s were a “renewed” product on Amazon for $160. I game mostly on console and use the controller output just as much as I would an amp. The TYGR cans do sound slightly warmer than the 990s, which I really like, but I’m not sure it’s enough to sway me to take the $110 premium to with the FOX mic. I’m torn. I mostly play shooters and I understand the flatter sound of the 880 is best competitively, but I do want that “fun” sound too. I’m competitive, but I don’t play tournaments or anything. As for the pads, there is definitely a difference between the TYGR pads and 990 Edition pads. While they appear the same, the TYGR pads are slightly thinner and softer. The 990 pads are definitely stiffer. Overall, the TYGR cans feel and sound the best to me, but being new to this hobby, I’m not at the point where I can pick out the particulars and weigh the value to cost. Any advice?

Hi. Welcome to HFGF!

If you prefer the warmer sound of the TYGR, then the extra $110 over the 990 isn’t just for the microphone, it’s also for the increased enjoyment you experience. Now, is the difference in enjoyment worth it? That’s a question only you can answer.

Most of Beyer’s line is really good for the gaming. I agree the 880 is probably “best” for <$200, but the 990 and TYGR are right on its heels.

You’ve also only discussed gaming in this post. Do you listen to music? What are your thoughts on each headphone for music?

Thanks for the quick reply. I do use them for music, but probably only 15-20% of the time compared to gaming. I have tested each using a variety of files and tests, and honestly, I can’t hear much of a difference at all. I’m not very treble sensitive, but since one of the biggest pros for the TYGRs in reviews has been their slight dampening of the treble when compared to the 990, I struggle to find/hear that difference. I also wonder how much the impedance impacts the slightly warmer sound I get with the TYGRs. And if the TYGRs are a re-tuned and branded 990, then would the 32 ohm 990 be even closer to the TYGR? Granted, most reviews of the 32 ohm say they’re muddy and not worth the money and yet the TYGR reviews are all glowing. Sorry if this sounds rambling. Really just trying to process my understanding of some of these differences and how impressions/reviews represent the objective and subjective factors.
