Curious if you are also using the tygr pads on the DT990 and notice any difference.
I believe he did mention the pads yeaā¦ the pads on tygr are the same on the black padded 990s
yeah pads and foam. Didnt think to slip the original pads on with the tygr foam so dont know how that will sound yet.
Oh okay, so I tested this theory. No, itās not the same as the tygr 300r and I didnāt expect it to be.
So this filter seems to reduce that treble by a big margin placing it closer to what I would want to say is harman like which is interesting itās still bright but nowhere near as sharp and has been smoothed. The bass is no longer so heavily emphasized you can clearly see how well controlled it is with this insertā¦ Mids are still recessed but appear to be ever so slightly more present.
If anything this is a V signatured Tygr now with scaling to my ear. Not bad, not bad at all. Then again tygr is a good option because it doesnāt have that brightness issue like at all so I am not sure if this is a good recommendation. Going to spend some time with this
Alright, I think itās been long enough trying this. So after listening for the past 4 days to the 990 600 ohm using tygrs filters I think I can conclude that it depends on what your searching for. If you want Tygr to be more flexible and brighter to the point where you can tinker at your leisureā¦ this setup works perfectly fine and is to the point if you change the pads it can become close to dark in sound with something such as a Suede or Leather pad. Itās still have that brighter peak to it with the foam insert but itās at the very least bearable and should be a consideration for some users of the 990 who find it to be a little on the too sharp side instead of using the toilet paper mod.
The mids are noticeably more present due to the dialing in of the other two frequencies. The lows do sound a little dialed back but they are slightly more forward than they were probably due to less air from the filter and treble reductions. Highs are smoothed out and less peaky but also reduced by a good margin around I want to sayā¦ 25% - 35% if your comparing neutral to itās regular state and goes up to around 60%-75% if you change the pads to my ear so itās a drastic change if you use both.
It does lose some of itās detail retrieval then again tygr isnāt a detail monster eitherā¦ however, it keeps itās imaging being spot on with that very large soundstage. The soundstage noticeably increases when you change the pads to dekonis just like most of the beyers though it depends on the pads.
The problems I see hereā¦ well theres a few. First off this modification doesnāt deplete the treble entirely so for those who are treble sensitive this is not a viable alternative and I will not recommend someone do this if I know they have issues with treble by a good marginā¦ Tygr will still be the better choice in this regard. Secondly, this modification comes at a more costly price from the 990s unless you buy the 990s 3rd party as they can be found around $125-$175 at 600 ohm though adding the filters and pad swap your still coming up to around $50 extra placing it over or equal to the tygr. Third, The fact you cannot completely deplete the treble to the tygrs point with the foam inserts less you eq or pad swap is indeed an issueā¦ as if you go the pad swap route you increase the bassā¦ this is a big problem for competitive gaming as the bass on the 990 is already slightly too much and after testing this is noticeably a large issue as the rumble becomes far too emphasized and definitely gets in your way at that point the other portion of this issue is simply put EQ at 600 ohms you are already pushing a lot of power and EQ requires even moreā¦ to seriously get this where you want it I had to push even the asgard 3 quite a bit to get things where I wanted them. Fourth, the comforts remain differentā¦ this could be a bit more because the pads are new but I feel the tygr may actually be slightly lighter and have a slightly different density on itās regular stock padsā¦ the clamp force is also quite a bit less on the tygr making them extremely comfortable for longer gaming sessions meanwhile 990 while relatively light clamp is still noticeable and even post breaking them in tygr wins in this regard so I believe an adjustment to the headband from beyer must have been done as I stretched the hell out of the 990 but once the tygr becomes a little more broken in it has less clamp than the 990 to my experience.
Overall it will come down to a preference. Do you want a V signature that can become sharper or to the point of a bass cannon warmth? 990 600 ohm with the filter + suedes or alternative leather padding will be right for you. Are you someone who wants a nice warm headphone, you are a bit treble sensitive, and play competitively + casually and ran amplessā¦? tygrs are the better choice
In terms of musicality I will add that 990 does best tygr if you are looking for that clearer, crisper, heavily detailed, airy sound. Tygr is quite lovely but is on the warmer side of things. They fit in different areas for sure and they do compliment each other quite well. Though I did some further testing and I came out with better results from using this filter on the DT 880s than I did my 990s granted 880s of course have less soundstage and imaging than the 990 it still responded better and became closer to that warm signature the tygr possessā¦ So at this point I am truly convincedā¦ this really is a 990 with the 880 style housing but fully open instead
Whatās more interesting was the test with the 1990. as like the DT 880s the 1990 becomes close to a warm signature, I will touch more on that in the 1990 forum respectively once I am done fiddling with it.
Ordering pads and multiple foam filters for all beyers now. Feels like the possibilities are endless and thereās always something a little different to enjoy. I love these headphones!
when you order pads from beyer they generally come with the standard filter with them. Outside of that I have tried some other filtersā¦ but they all werenāt that good. Tygr would be the only particular option I would specifically recommend.
As for pads? hah, yeah so I own every single pad variety for my beyers including custom velvets that feel like a super soft smooth blanket. With any headphone a change of pads can drastically alter the sound so you may get a headphone that your just likeā¦ ya knowā¦ this is too bright throw on a pair of suede, leather, hell even thicker velour and it may fix your problem
This is good to know. I ordered 3 tygr filters thinking in case the pads didnt come with them.
Im slowly building a collection of pads. This black friday really helped with that. One I want to try for both the beyers and my nighthawks would be the ZMF Ori hybrid pads with the suede and lambskin. Hoping the suede and lambskin combo can imitate the og nighthawk pads and see how they go with the Beyerdynamics. Iād assume more bass.
I should reiterate on this a bit. The tygr filter has to be specially ordered. EDT 990 VB pads come with the 990s filter inserts not the tygr and amiron.
I tried to love the ZMF pads but find myself gravitating towards the Dekoni moreā¦ granted ZMF I think are more breathable and a touch softer. Preferences I suppose.
Suede in general causes beyers to explode with bass so keep that one in mind it also depletes the treble by a very large margin. Adding lambskin will also essentially do the same just to a different degree less they are perforated
Yeah I put the order in for the tygr amiron specific ones through the order form.
Now that you mention that, it does sound like it would be overkill. Iād also rather want to spend less on pads. Tempted to play the lottery with random ali express pads but I probably wont.
well zmf has some special options to them that dekoni just doesnāt have. Lambskin(softer than sheepskin naturally so it has some airy qualities), Protein(you see these on Argons in some pictures these are those massive pads), Cowhide, and Suede perforated(uniqueā¦ all I can say), and non perforated hybrids are unique to them(add qualities of both pads suede and lamb)
Edit: I mean, I do like them just the pricetag is overwhelming all considering. I would only buy from zmf if I am absolutely certain of the pad type I want and itās on my go-to daily driver headphone. Would be the same if I bought alpha pads or audeze vegan pads.
You can tell what a pad will do to your headphone though. For example in this case beyerdynamic they naturally come with velour which is the airest material of pads next to say cloth which you hardily seeā¦ Therefore adding any form of airy material wonāt typically make their headphones brighter than they are(it can make them grainy or strangely sibilant though be warned on that)ā¦ so even if you add a perforated itās just going to be similar in brightnessā¦ meanwhile if you add a solid pad to them itās going to flip that signature and add a tremendous amount of bass or in some cases help with the mids. But if you had say a different headphone that was tuned with solid padsā¦ and you put velour on them itās going to add a lot more treble than originally it was tuned with.
Tygr filters on the amiron home is a combo that I really like so far. Picked up a pair of amirons for 300 and swapped the tygr filters into them since mine had the plain black and grey filters. With stock pads, Smooth bassy with upfront mids. This is what Iāve wanted. Still wish the bass was punchier. Highs have been toned down. But still there. Not noticing sibilance but Iām not too sensitive to it so ymmv. Smooth but in your face is how Iād describe it.
I thought bout going to the amiron honestly but I want to change those damn padsā¦ I hate alcantara and the amiron has that annoying peak you need to deal with or equalize or it causes random sibilance at loud volumes.
Surprised yours had black filters thoughā¦ thought the tygr filters were customary of the amiron
Amiron is quite literally a budget t1.2 without the scaling and pad swap in my opinion
Yeah I wish there were better scaling on this set. I was also surprised it included the regular filter. Now Iām really glad I over ordered on those tygr filters. Will probably go into my 990, 2nd pair of 880, and amiron.
Honestly Iām glad you said this is a budget t1.2. I want the t1.2 eventually unless that dt1880 shows upā¦
Amiron Wireless, but not the Amiron Home. I was confused by it too.
I am now convinced people should be doing this to their Tygrs. Same way I keep hearing you are missing out if you arenāt putting your 6XXs or 880s through a tube. I had a whole day off listening and Iām impressed how much control you get with a tube buffer. If it ever gets too boosted in bass or treble(particularly in modern songs) making adjustments on the fly is easy. Vocals shine on this.
Nice, Iāve been considering a darkvoice. Might just go for this solution to play with.
You certainly wonāt be disappointed, especially for just 50 bucks if you get the GE JAN-5654 tubes.
Tygr is only 32 ohms so no real reason to use something like a dark voiceā¦ but I can definitely agree with you that little buffer preamp works beautifully
