Beyerdynamics DT177X Go are available!

I swapped the stock pads for the perforated Brainwavez and never looked back. Tamed the sound significantly and now are really comfortable.I like the connectors and strain relief on the cable, but the cable itself is a little too plastic feeling. It needs to be a tiny bit thicker and 75% softer. I have a Hart cable on order.
The first day I got my Drop THX amp, they were the only headphones I had at work to listen with and I found the treble too harsh, but they sound great with a warmer amp, IMO.
I hope they settle in for you.

Iā€™d imagine the 177X would win hands down depending on what youā€™re looking for. I assume the MMX300 share similar drivers with the DT770, DT880, & DT990 line over the newer DT1990 & DT1770 line of headphones. If you look at the general consensus and reviews the newer line beats out the older line in terms of sound quality. If you line up all the headphones by spec the MMX300 matches the DT770 more so than the the DT1770.

Yes, and also better staging, otherwise they do sound like beyers.

Sperimentinā€™ cause I donā€™t think Iā€™ll make it over the finish line otherwise. Currently with the gold center shield removed and the snowflake in place seems to be the sweet spot. Did try about a half dozen other configs. Thankfully the pad allows for easy testing on the outside and if I want to further listen, I move it inside between the pad liner and the polymer lip insert. They seem to stay in there pretty well despite the contortioning needed to get them in.

Thatā€™s interesting, is that piece of foam that you applied the gold dot to the default tuning foam that came with the 177X? those look like the exact ones on my Amiron Wireless.

Yeap, stock thicker in the middle by twice.

How do those mods change the sound signature?

what I feel is entirely too much treble in what otherwise is a pretty decent can. I grew up modding an M1060 so everything I know about changing sound signature is self taught by trial and error and with the understanding that youā€™ll never turn that Honda Civic into an M series BMW but you can certainly improve the handling and power a bit to lessen the chasm.

In this case Iā€™ve tried 2mm light spongy foam. I used crafts felt that you buy at AC Moore, I used thick cloth and I had various sized mylar discs. Hell in the modding community people try paper towels or toilet paper. The reality is that everything you put and where you put it in between a driver and your ear changes the tuning in some way shape or fashion.

In this case Iā€™m luck because Iā€™m trying to take away or filter if you will sound in a certain part of the spectrum. In modding, taking away is much easier than adding; because (see Honda/BMW comparison above) First part of the trial and error is finding a material or combination of materials that dampen the right frequency you want to target. Once you find that you can remove material to take away less. In this case, an entire felt cutout took away too much. So I started taking away material until I found a balance I liked. The snowflake effect is good because you can take away some and then come back and repeat cuts to take away some more if needed. I started out with something that looked like a radioactive symbol and worked from there.

So far I think Iā€™m in the neighborhood of something I can live with. My only goal here was to get something I can crank up and enjoy during late nights when my wife would otherwise tell me to turn that shit down if I was wearing open backs.

I used one of my wifeā€™s cotton disc makeup remover pads to tame the treble a but in my T5P. May want to give it a try.

Pantyhose, makeup pads. Iā€™m actually surprised there arenā€™t more women in this hobby

These are excellent. Plus they have an advantage that they peel like a pastry wafer and you can make them thinner. Theyā€™re messy though when you pull them apart.

Kind of skimmed due to time. But what would you guys (owners) say are pros and cons to these? Asking for a friend whoā€™s interested

To my ears, they represent music very accurately. I use Dekoni Velours on them, so theyā€™re not super bassy, but I can always hear when something ridiculous is going on in the music. Stock pads are good too, but the pads Iā€™m using are more comfortable. Out of the box, the clamp is too light for me, so I bent the yokes until the ear pads are touching eachother when not on my head. They are built well, like most Beyers, but the cable is pretty bad, so Iā€™d recommend getting a new one from Hart Audio for about $50. Overall, very good closed back headphones.

Niceeeeeee. Thnx! Do they require alot of burn in? And would you consider them fun?

Not sure if they need much burn in. I do like them more now than I did when I bought them if that means anything. They react well to pad swapping, so if you wanted more bass, put on some deep pleather/leather pads for more slam.

Gotcha. Thnx for the response!

Interesting, these things went back up to $450 at drop.

Mine are for sale for $300 if anyone is interested

Huh. That is interesting. @db_Cooper, once I missed out on getting yours, I went ahead and bought a pair off Drop but at $380, so that was what, a couple of weeks ago?
