🔷 Burson Soloist 3X

Yep its the multibit version, the seller says it is gen 5 USB too, i will make an offer.

That’s a pretty great deal then, I’d def shoot them an offer

Ah @luizgarcia, is it an A1 or A2 output stage board? The A1 will be more relaxed and warmer, better weighting and density, more smooth, whereas the A2 will be more neutral, forward, and overall more technical but still organic. Generally I do think the A2 board is overall better, but I can see some preferring the more chilled out and warmer and more sweetened sound of the A1

Awesome! I was actually looking at the same DAC. It’s a decent deal (for Canada at least).

I couldn’t make it work with my current space but I am glad you were able to get it!

The RME does have great features though and is likely what you’re mostly paying for. I bought a used 4499 model on another forum to use with my desktop setup at work. Main reason the ability to apply EQ (work IT policy does not allow 3rd party software) and its nice having being able to control output to the amp. I have it paired with a Jot 2 via XLR and to my surprise, it is a very nice combo. The RME is very clean while the Jot 2 adds a bit of warmth - quite happy with them both.

Just got the Gungnir, first impressions after 10 minutes are that its sound is much warmer than the Modius, the treble sounds incredibly more natural and less harsh while keeping all the detail. Hell i think there is even more detail in the Gungnir but with zero harshness and i never thought the Modius was harsh until now.

In comparison the highs on the Modius sound digital and unnatural compared to the Gungnir, i think the star o the show for this DAC will be the treble.

Other than that there is a clear difference in soundstage and instrument separation, i can’t put my finger on it yet but the presentation is different.

Off to a good start here! Btw this thing is HUGE! I will have to put the Soloist stacked on top of it, lol

You might know this already - make sure you keep it on! R2R DACs (especially larger ones like the Gungnir) take about about a week to stabilize. I imagine it will only get better with time.

Congrats on your new acquisition!

Thanks! Yep i read that somewhere, i am keeping it on for sure. In any case it is so big i had no option but to stack the soloist on top of it, so it is guaranteed it will stay super warm (hopefully not too warm)

As an ex A30 Pro / G111 user, I am THRILLED with this thing(3XP, not 3X). . . I can certainly hear better bass definition, control, power, much more treble smoothness, richness, and better 3D/imaging effects with my lowly Vokyl Erupts. Timeless now has NO bright treble, and is basically totally smooth sounding. This thing also gets HOT; I can feel heat 1 inch away from any side of it. Has to be the hottest headphone amp I’ve come across so far(and I thought some Schiit amps got hot). I would rate this 10/10 for sound, but the manual controls are clunky, and the volume knob is very slow, so I miss being able to go from 0 to 100 vol in 1 turn like you can on A30P. It also has LESS power than A30P in single-ended, so at first I wasn’t hearing any sound come out… Then I realized I needed to crank it way up. About IEMs, I’ve listened to Timeless, ZAS, AST, and FHE so far, and only Timeless has no hiss/hum from the amp in low gain. The hiss is pretty low and tolerable, when it is there. If you go to medium gain, you get 10x more hiss lol. (And no, I hate the IEMatch+; sounds terrible IMO) I’m not sure what all of the accessories are; extra opamps? Some kind of tiny gold thing? Special XLR-to-RCA OUTPUT adapters… :5

The accessories are briefly discussed in the manual. Suggest you read it, if you haven’t already, as there are some good things to know regarding operation and what the accessories are for.

As a Class A amp it will get much warmer than any of your previous amps. Never gets too hot to the touch but definitely can notice it in the room if left on for a long time.

I would suggest that getting a headphone that can take advantage of the XLR will be a very worthwhile investment as a future upgrade. The amp was designed around the balanced output. The SE is not bad but the XLR is definitely the “party piece.” I find it pairs great with Hifiman headphones.

Mine is certainly too hot to touch more than 2 seconds. Maybe you’re not using a supercharger?

Well, I don’t have XLR going into the amp yet, so it’s all SE. I’ve heard the bal and SE sound pretty much the same on this amp, from one other person, anyway. I can try using the XLR jack though.

hmm besides power output I didn’t notice much change in sound quality between xlr and SE outputs. By default I always use XLR because of my cables but the ones I have tried on SE I didn’t notice much difference.

QUESTIONS:

  • Is your 3XP(with or without supercharger) too hot to hold with your bare hands more than a few seconds?

  • Does your 3XP sound better in power amp mode?

  • What’s a good, affordable (XLR, at least) pre-amp to use with 3XP, to control volume in power amp mode?

If it is getting that hot, that quick it doesn’t seem right. Would suggest you contact Burson support just to make sure. I ran mine with the supercharger and it never got as hot as you described.

I felt the XLR sounded better but mileage will vary for everyone.

Never used mine in power amp mode. Not my use case.

I ordered a temp gun, so I’ll post my findings in a bit. Going to guess 147 degrees.

All those temps look rather normal for a class A amp. They match what mine typically measures.

Mines get hot around noon (when the temperature outside rises).
Thanks for the pics!
I use my soloists as a hand-warmer too. Now I know where the warmest spot is.
