Not sure if the temperature measurements are correct
If i remember correctly reflective surfaces donāt work correctly with those , but the brushed look could be enough to make it work
Yes, the manual says to put masking tape over reflective surfaces for 30 minutes, then read the tape, which I didnāt do. =P (That may be inaccurate, too, as itās reading the fins, not core temp) I was just trying to get between the fins. My hot water from the sink said about 108, so it āfeelsā about right. Not sure how reflective this actually is on the scaleā¦ I certainly canāt use this amp to shave with.
In POWER AMP MODE, medium gain, I am now reading over 127 degrees, close to the previous hot spot(jack side), and 114 on the front panel.
Had bought the T1.2s and already have the 880s, but before I packed them up I decided to give the 880s a listen on the Burson to see what it was like- damn, match made in heaven. Almost regretted selling the 880s but they just donāt have enough bass or the imaging the T1s have, but if youāre ride or die on the 880s the 3x is an EXCELLENT choice, and not only drives them to loud volume but theyāre incredibly controlled as well
@Pokrog or @M0N (or any others in this thread)
Iāve decided to finally pull the trigger on a Burson Soloist 3xp to pair with my OG HE-6. I will be moving up from a Jot 2.
There is a seller whos looking to sell a 3xp + Supercharger for $1,132 USD shipped. I live in Canada so Iāve always expected to pay a slight premium vs. US resale market but basically wanted some final thoughts on whether this is a good deal or not.
Maybe I am just having a case of cold feetā¦
that seems about right. they sell pretty often at around $900-$1000 without a supercharger, but it never hurts to ask if theyāre flexible on the price. I did recently see one sell for $1000 with the supercharger so thereās definitely deals to be had out there if youāre patient.
That seems fair to me considering ca pricing, as @Pokrog mentions doesnāt hurt to ask if they will knock off 100 or something
Thanks for your input! Iāll keep everyone posted and also give impressions when its all said and done.
Another site I use frequently is this:
https://www.hifizero.com/index.php?q=Burson+Soloist
Filter by CAD and Canada and youāll get some more recent listings that are now sold or completed.
Thanks. I saw in one of many posts by @Pokrog re: power rating for Burson 3xp at about 3W per channel at 50 ohms. While Iāve read many touting that the 3xp is great with the HE-6, I do have doubts as to how much of an improvement I will get vs. the Jot 2, which is 4W at 50 ohms. Is the difference in āqualityā of power a result of the Burson being Class A? It is quite a sum of money to upgrade from the Jot.
FWIW, I have both a BF2 and a RME ADI-2 as my DACs.
edit: I had a RebelAmp a few months ago - while great, it wasnāt mind blowing despite being Class A. Granted its only rated at 1W @ 32 ohms. Ended up selling and going back to the Jot 2.
So in terms of actual rated output power, it has been shown that burson is very conservative in their numbers and that itās likely a fair bit higher than what they say. Regardless of that though, itās not really about the power, having more power does help but as long as it doesnāt come at the expense of quality. Something being class a doesnāt automatically make it higher quality than a/b or other topology either, itās just a design choice. Showing actual amp sound quality and synergy with a headphone and source is really not something you can look at a spec sheet and see, itās moreso something you have to listen to and decide for yourself, only way to assess it and know is to listen
In regards to the rebel amp, I also would agree itās good but nothing all that special (especially with an he6), so Iām not surprised you didnāt find it to be a significant jump over the jot 2
I am also from Canada and I got mine open box from headphones.com for $900, they charge taxes beforehand so no surprises.
You are in for a treat my friend
Concerning noise with IEMs, can anyone confirm/deny if there is noise on 3XP with the following?
- EJ07
- EJ07M / KL
- FD7
- FH9
Iām not sure what the best desktop solution is for ~$500, if there is noise on most of theseā¦ SMSL SP400? Mojo 2 with external power. I tried IEMatch+ with Mojo 1, and all I heard was significantly worse soundā¦but maybe that wasnāt a good application for it.
Personally I think the SP400 is a good possibility for an amp. I was looking at that one a while back but at the time it was too expensive for me. It has come down to $629.00 now. If the SA-1 were to go out on me the SP400 would be on the short list to replace it.
Of course, it is THX based, and many hang the āsterileā tag on it. I know I had the same complaint with my SP200, but when I pair it with a tube pre, magic happens! BTW, there is no noise running the SP200. NONE. I suspect the SP400 would be silent as well, so it might be a good fit for use with IEMs. I donāt use IEMs, so I canāt really say for sure how it would pair.
Overall, Maybe the SP400 is not quite in the same league as the Soloist, but itās nearly half the price, and it wonāt get so bloody hot!
So, after a few days with the Gungnir i feel like i understand how it compares to the Modius a bit more.
First thing is, it pairs really well with the Soloist imo.
At first i could tell i liked its sound a lot but i could not put my finger in what exactly was the difference comparing to the Modius, but i did some A/B before selling the Modius and then things got clearer.
The Gungnir has a more life-like sound, it is organic and realistic. This makes you think that it delivers less detail at first, but it is confusing because it actually deliver more detail and i donāt know how but the soundstage seems a bit more spacious as well, also the instrument separation is clearer.
The Modius seem to have more detail at first but i personally think that happens because the Modius is a bit harsh on the high end frequencies (like it is brighter), this is something i could not hear when i only had the Modius, nothing beats having another reference to put things in perspective.
The combination of more detail, better soundstage and better instrument separation + a more organic and realistic sound signature is just awesome!
I read somewhere that the Gungnir has better macro dynamics compared to the Modius but i really could not tell if there is a difference in this area.
In the end i am very happy with the Gungnir as my endgame DAC and the Soloist as my endgame amplifier. Btw, the differences between the two DACs was much clearer in the HE6 than in the Gjallarhorn and the TH909 (as expected).
Thanks for the recommendations guys, i will not ever be able to go into summit-fi gear and i can say for 100% certainty i donāt need to change anything else in my chain, this setup may not be the very best money can buy but it is a great place to stop and enjoy some music
So I assume the Gungnir would also be a great pairing for the Grand Tourer version of the Soloist 3X?
I have never auditioned the GT but i bet it would! From what i read about the main difference is extra power, the sound signature is similar.
It hasā¦ UNLIMITED POWERRRRRRRRR
I have the Gungnir and Soloist too and one hundred percent agree! They are a phenomenal match. The spacious natural sound of the Gungnir is rendered beautifully through the clear detailed Soloist.
Iām planning out my headphone collection, and have been considering both the HE6 and the TH909. Since youāve got both I have some questions!
Does the TH909 sound good on the Burson, I know itās pretty sensitive and amp temperamental? Do you enjoy having both the HE6 and 909s? Do you find you use them for different genres or different moods? I really like what Iāve heard about both and am trying to plan out a collection where Iāve got options to change things up sonically.
