Nope got it from Thomann, Europes biggest store for music gear and instruments. They sell everything from crazy expensive Fazioli concert grands for several millions of Euros, over guitars and violins, down to cables and DJ equipment. Their place is like a Disneyland for music fanatics
sounds nice. lol
It is a very dangerous place (their website, that is, never been to their store). You go in “I just need two cables” and you end up with a 1400€ moving head and a drumkit.
@M0N Thanks again for your help! Really, it means a lot to me
I just decided I’ll drive to Thomann tomorrow with one of my buddies. They have the RNHP and Phonitor lineup on display. Will take my unit with me and see if their unit exhibits the same issues on the T2s / test listen other amps. Really excited to hear the SPL stuff.
Has anyone heard the SPL 2Control? Looks funny with all of its colorful input selectors on the front, might be worth a listen too.
It’s pretty neat (the 2Control) but it really is more geared as a monitor controller, but it does a pretty good job with headphones as well
I just hope you end up with something you like in the end with no issues, whether it be another rnhp or a spl product (or something else if you find something neat )
Thanks! In case it turns out my power at home will never work nicely with the RNHP, is there any other amp with similar sound characteristics under 1000$ you could recommend? It can also be a tad more clinical than the RNHP if it must.
1500 for the Phonitor would already stretch it a lot for now
Hmmm, perhaps you could get a jds labs el amp 2 and that would be nice but I would prefer the rnhp to it unless you really need the power.
The erzetich bacillus is a brighter amp you might like if you can get it. I prefer the rnhp but it’s more preference with this one
From what I’ve heard the El Amp II is a slightly more powerful Atom in a more beautiful chassis but otherwise sounds almost similar. Let’s see what great things I get to listen to tomorrow and maybe I’ll fall in love with something not even on the radar
It’s also got some interesting things going on in the treble that makes it very enjoyable to listen to, although it’s not really going to be as clinical and analytical as the thx stuff.
Also I do think the rnhp is more detailed and more accurate than the thx amps, but it’s presented in a more natural way so at first listen it sounds less detailed, to jack of the rnhp harder lol. And to rephrase my stance on thx one more, it’s good if you like analytical, but it’s not endgame and not the best with higher tier headphones, and it’s also not neutral or natural either
Ohhhh what about the Asgard 3? It’s only around 200 bucks but might it be worth to listen to? How does it fare in terms of detail retrieval and is it still so incredibly compressed like the old Schiit stuff?
So I really like the asgard 3, its way better than most of schiits current amps, I would def have the a3 over the jot imo. The a3 is a warmer/balanced/fun amp with tons of power on tap, that’s pretty engaging. It isn’t tainted with a heavy schiit signature nor compression, it’s just really good for the price. That being said if you wanted something more transparent/analytical the atom might beat it in that regard but I really do enjoy it actually. I don’t know if it is worth it or not for you, I think the rnhp or a different higher tier amp might be something more for you, but the a3 is very nice imo
Sounds interesting enough to give it a try, thanks! Yea I really loved the sound coming out of the RNHP, I really do, but it’s no good if my house’s power is so dirty that all RNHPs would exhibit the same PSU whistling.
I’ll take my RNHP with me tomorrow and try to plug it in at Thomann and see if it’s fixed there. My friend living in a multi story apartment doesn’t necessarily talk tales about power quality. Maybe we both have really bad power coming out our walls.
Yeah, I would also do some more listening tonight to see if you can get yourself at least a bit more familiar with the sound of the rnhp so you can compare easier tomorrow I guess lol
Been listening on and off for the last few hours with my Amiron Homes (definitely like the RNHP on them the most so far. Little to no difference on the Sundaras compared to the Atom). Really hope I only have a faulty unit and it isn’t my bad power.
Yeah the sundara isn’t as picky as some other headphones
I’m back from my little excursion, what a day it’s been.
First let’s talk RNHP. My unit was dead silent in the facilities of Thomann. A technician explained to me that pro(sumer) gear is pretty picky about its power and there’s nothing much I can do except try stupidly expensive AC/DC filters for several hundred bucks, which quite frankly isn’t in my budget just to get the RNHP to a working state. Real bummer, but they were very understanding and took the unit back without any hestitation and refunded me in full with no restocking fee!
So I guess my journey starts from scratch hahaha.
I was also able to listen to the Phonitors (normal E, XE and the standard 2 with the big old VUs) and I found them a bit thinner sounding than the RNHP but they retrieved A LOT more detail, especially noticeable on higher end headphones they had me trying. But to be perfectly honest, it’s not the sound I’m after I found out today.
In terms of headphones my absolute favorite pair was the Clear Pros. If I hadn’t been in public I think I would have lost a tear or two because it just sounded so insanely good (on the RNHP to boot!). My next big headphone purchase FOR SURE will be the Clears, fell absolutely in love with them.
I was also able to test the beyer amps (A20 and A2) but I hated how they changed the sound signature of the headphones. Everything became extraordinarily bassy and the soundstage felt super flat like a plane in front of me. Not a fan whatsoever of those.
Tried some Grace Design amps, only one in my price range was the M900 which had a lot of background noise in my T2s at listening levels, so no bueno.
Tried the Lehmann Audio stuff and found them to be nothing special for some reason? They were fine, but not 900€ fine. No special characteristic, no gimmicks, just sounded solid. My Atom sounds solid as well, at 800€ less, not a fan so far.
My favorite sound came from a Violectric HPA V281. I can’t really describe the sound but like … call me crazy it sounded less forced but more effortless. As if the sound travelled on a cloud and had no efforts whatsoever reaching me. Incredible experience, but with 2000€ out of my reach by a long shot.
All in all if you’re in Europe and ever have the chance to go there, please give it a try. They have EXTREMELY friendly staff and are sure to help you even if you aren’t necessarily looking to buy something.
For me now, I have to start from scratch and think of a nice amp that sounds analytical with tendencies to musical, is fit for IEMs, has enough power to drive my beyers and works with my bad power coming out of my wall sockets.
Thanks for reading!
The clears with the rnhp is just
These have a fairly high output impedance so for most headphones it’s not ideal
Just solid headphone amps, good for studio because they are fairly transparent but I feel like they don’t do some headphones justice
That’s a pretty nice amp, I enjoy it alot. You may be able to find some used violectric for cheaper than you think too
Well that’s great that you got to listen to a bunch of stuff, sounded like a fun time
I don’t know how feasible it is in Europe, or if it’s even possible but if you ever come across the Geshelli Archel 2.5 give it a listen
It’s pretty good too, the enog2 pro and the archel 2.5 pro is honestly my pick over a thx setup lol
If I ever have the chance to go give it a listen I’ll surely do! But I don’t think I’ll be able to order one to Europe only to find out I don’t like it / has too little power. I really liked the Argons when I tested them with the SP200 so the Archel 2 might not be enough to drive them properly to my likings.
