Comparing the JDS Labs Atom and SMSL SP200 THX AAA 888

From the price and size, I got a gut feeling of what is inside.
And while you could DIY that, it is not worth the effort to save 5€

Guess on what is inside:

A common mode choke, chokes with 470nH on each current patch, some capacitor ranging from nF to uF.
Unlikely: an LDO with a dynamic voltage reference.

Sounds interesting! (for the record I have zero clue what all that means )

Do you think it could actually do something against the noise or is it snake oil?

Depending on what is inside (and I guess there is stuff in int), it works.

Picture of what I described:

And what someone here diy’ed:

And yes, more is more in this case.

Random thought are you running balanced or single ended… if not I wonder if a wire from chassis to chassis would eliminate it

The sound is also present when no source is connected and the pot set to zero.

Doesn’t sound like mains hum to me, so it’s probably something else injecting noise, personally I’d go to my main panel and turn off everything except the one circuit, then turn everything off on that circuit to see if stops.
You can then try and establish what it is by turning things back on one at a time.
If it doesn’t go away, there isn’t much outside of conditioners you can try.
That filter might work in this case, and I would agree, it’s probably just a box with some big caps in it.

Yea like I said even if there’s no source plugged in, just DC power and nothing else, I can hear this noise through my headphones. Guess 20 bucks isn’t too much to waste if it isn’t going to work.

Ahhhh. Yeah, forgot about that

There’s also this, often used for guitars and guitar amps apparently… Still less than 100$.

Filtering AC is quite the bit harder than filtering DC. Not saying it can’t be done at that scale, but I doubt it is as resiliant or durable than usually sized filters from Furman or similar.

@M0N So … I’ve ordered the RNHP … again  I just can’t give up on the sound that came out of that little thing. In addition though I ordered the small 22€ passive DC power purifier and a big Adam Hall 6 socket power conditioner. Hope I’ll be able to fix the noise issues and send back the unnecessary gear (hope the small 22€ one already does the trick, would spare me a lot of unnecessary money )

All the goodies should arrive saturday or monday, will report back once I have gotten everything in :v:t2:

Hopefully your problems are solved :crossed_fingers:

Is RCA into the RNHP worse than XLR? Or is it comparable? I know there is a gain difference especially with 3.5mm in, but not sure about the other two. I guess I’m asking if it’s designed with balanced input in mind or if it’s more like thx where it’s more about convenience and one won’t sound better than the other.

I think it’s more about convenience. I A/Bed both inputs and they sounded largely identical, IMO. Even volume wise they are about the same.

There is a slight difference but it’s not really an issue imo, no problems. Although the 3.5mm is a bit boosted lol

I’m looking to get my first SS amp. Since I only have HD600 and HD280 on a modi 3, should I get the atom or do you think that the Archel 2.5 is a noticeable improvement regardless of the 1 watt similarity?

nvm I just bought the Archel 2.5 lol

They are both insane value for sure and at least in terms of the Atom it sounds incredibly clean. You couldn’t have gone wrong with either, have fun with it!

Thanks! Luckily I still had time to return my modi 3 so I’m also getting the ENOG2 for the STACK.

I have both the Modi 3 and the Enog 2 and like them both very much, especially for USB use which only the Modi has. Hope you’ll like it!
