Ha! I knew i couldn’t be the ONLY one that likes the look of wood. FYI, that particular wood is extremely light, so no issues with weight, doesn’t negatively affect the cable at all, nor does it interfere when i use the cable. They look damned nice! Congratulations @Onaha, hope you enjoy them! Also @CapistranoCables does a heck of a nice tight braid, great value and look
Thank you for being the test guinea pig for the first run with the wooden splitters. Seeing how well they came out on yours made adding them to mine a no brainer. I look forward to see what @CapistranoCables is able to do with wood in a year if the first efforts look this good.
And yes, I can attest to the lightness of camphor burl firsthand with my Eikons. Another reason I like them so much
Full disclosure: I’ve been a power cable denier for … ever. I don’t have golden ears - I can’t hear a difference between a Modi MB and OG Bifrost MB.
Had some wires laying around from various projects and figured I’d make myself a pretty power cable. I used a hybrid of several different wire and shielding methodologies and made the thing in the pic (the cable, not the cat).
So, plugged it into my WHAMMY amp and…I don’t do audiophile descriptions. Everything is better. I don’t know why and I still don’t believe it. Went back to the stock power cable. Listened for all of 1 minute and threw it away. I have an oscilloscope and also a calibrated microphone. As I find time, I’ll do some measurements and see if I can explain the difference in cables. Will be building more of these…
Pretty.
But the law in safety & electronics and insurance company / fire marshal in my country would be very happy to see selfmade power cable in case of fire.
How about DIY amplifier kits? Just as much (if not more) fire risk there.
Probably more in the gray and save area.
If all parts are measured / certified to fit and work. You “plug & play” with probably no issues.
But without qualified electrician papers… there is change it’s years and years of legal fights and thousands + thousands money. Better not mention the (DIY) part and leave it just as a amp.
The power side is more no no.
so…then don’t mention that the power cord is DIY.
Depends.
Wall adapter off the shelf or integrated PSU?
Wall adapter is fine.
Integrated PSU is big no-no.
-imagine stupid stuff here- (decided I don’t want to give people ideas)
All my current HP amps are DIY kits (Crack & WHAMMY) with DIY PSUs so I suppose my room is one big fire hazard
I guess my living room will be as well once I finish my First Watt kits.
i was planning both of these for August, hows the Whammy power/sound wise, would be my first class A
I love it. Plenty of power/current for anything. It’s got a wider soundstage than other amps I’ve used. I didn’t expect that. But it’s very op-amp dependent. The 4850 that the kit comes with sounds very blah to me. But your sonic preferences may be different. I tested 5 different op amps and noted my opinions on them in the WHAMMY thread.
oh perfect, i was looking at that and the Rebel, i think im happy with the decision…Ill be sure to look at that thread, thank you for the detail…
Just to follow up, @CapistranoCables did a fantastic job with the cables mentioned above. Excellent braiding, very reasonably priced for the quality of work. I took a pic, but neither do the cables any better justice than the pics above.
I wanted 4.4 balanced cables for my HD800s and LCD i4 to use both on my FiiO M15. I still plan to use the 800S mainly on my desktop tube amp, but they are really good headphones for work for me. Light and open, I can wear them all day and not be startled when my coworker tries to get my attention, and the cable Jason made for them is one of the best in my collection. I own a $500 silver cable from ZMF, and I put this right up there next to it. If anyone has ever tried to braid a cable before, you know its a fine line between maintaining a tight braid and making your cable stiff and rigid. This cable is a ROPE, but it is slack and drapes over surfaces without complaint. Very impressed. Moving from the normal tube amp to a ss DAP makes me see all the quirks this headphone has, but it’s a tradeoff I’ll happily make for the portability.
The silver cable for the LCD i4 is just as impressive in construction, but it is taking me a little getting used to the sonic changes it’s introduced. The stock Audeze cable is actually very good, but only came in single ended 3.5mm. With that cable, I can listen without feeling the need to EQ, but not so much with the new balanced cable. For some reason, the change to balanced has altered the soundstage and imaging slightly. Not to the point of being bad, just different than what I was used to. I in no way blame the cable, but it does seem like the extra power from balanced is a factor.
TL;DR I will buy from @CapistranoCables again without hesitation. My Aeon 2 Closeds are looking at the 800S cable with envy, and they will likely be next on my list
Only $40…for connectors, Canare Cable, balanced for use with My HEDDS and Schiit Jotenheim…took about an hour to build…
Got the Canare cable and all the connectors from Martek.
Got my cable from @brux over at Hart Audio and it is beautiful! I seriously love this thing. And the color pairs with my gear exactly how I had hoped.
Beautiful work and beautiful photography!
As a serious fan and buyer of Hart audio stuff, Man ! I wish that Blue was a stock color…
