I’ll try and take a pic next time I’m farting about with this stuff. Thanks for the help!
Recabling of my K501 and a custom cable (3.5mm - 4-pin XLR termination) (Mogami W2893). I got fed up with the crappy Hifiman cable when I had their Ananda loaner unit, so I made my own. My custom cable has been serving me well since then for a number of different cans. As for the K501, a simple retermination wasn’t possible because AKG used a common ground wire alongside L and R wires, so there were only three wires at its termination.
My first ever cable build. I have repaired two or three 3.5mm jacks.
Anyway, I wanted to make a versatile balanced cable for my Verum 1, so I went with a 2.5mm connector and I went for right-angled 3.5mm jacks into the headphones because the angle seemed more ergonomic.
I used an old and unused Senn HD650 cable, hence the weird split leading into the 2.5mm end.
I know it’s not professional looking just yet, but I learned a lot and I think it’s not too bad for a first try…
After the very small Neutrik Plug I ordered did not fit the T50RP’s, I rememberd the cable I used in my secondary computer for the front panel. After taking my calipers to it, the plug fits the stupid recessed plug on the T50RP’s!
So my last order included the cable:
Ready for soldering:
Job done (all contacts measure 0 Ohm over the 1.8m length):
Picture of cable in T50RP is in the works.
If anybody is looking for cables that complement harts cables or an alternative to the ursine modular system this guy Jason on Etsy is super cool! His cables terminate at the y split in a male mini xlr but he is swapping them to terminate in a female mini xlr so I can’t use them with hart interconnects.
I order these in different colors for my teaks, senns and zmfs.
Also ordered some 4 ft and 2.5 ft interconnects in black (4.4 pentagon, 4 pin xlr, 2.5 mm, and 1/4 inch) from hart to go with these. Super excited! He charges 35 for these y-splits and is super nice and custimizes just how you want. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Here is a link to that guys Etsy.
I’ve taken a pic and drawn a (not very accurate) yellow line in a zoomed-in portion to try and show where I mean. Full pic and then zoomed…
Hopefully that shows the idea - there are holes straight down the middle of the pin but they’re very narrow and most cables don’t fit, so the sides of the pins (yellow drawing on the 2nd pic) looks like the best option, is that where most people solder onto?
Yeap, ideally you thread the wire into the hole, heat it up and flow in solder.
Soldering to the sides will do too (and be easier).
Cables from Jason at Capistrano came in. Now just waiting on the bottoms from hart. I asked Jason to make me one main cable now too since he gets them out so quick. Too impatient to wait for hart lol. Although I know they’ll be great when they come in.
They look great. Can’t wait to test them when my 4.4 main from him comes this weeks. I think this is my new cable guy
Oh man! That cable on the Hawks looks fine! I might have to sell my Periapt to finance a new set from your new cable guy. Would he do a full cable terminated in a 1/4" or 3.5mm?
I’m sure he would! He was so responsive about customizing my stuff how I wanted. I honestly would just get a y-cable and a 1/4 inch main from either him or hart. Then if you end up with a new amp is would be so much cheaper to just swap out the main cable.
Harts interconnects will work with these and you can get a 4 ft one for only like 25 bucks. Just be sure to request from Jason that he terminate the y in a female minixlr instead of male if you go this route so that they work with hart
But yeah Jason has been pretty awesome about taking different requests from me so far. And the cables came in like 4 days!
But yeah as you can see the only difference between his and hart is that he terminates the y cable in male and the main or “interconnect” in female.
But I told him I wanted to use harts interconnects and he had no problem swapping it out for me. Hell customize the lengths colors and braids for you as well. Super cool dude.
I can’t say that I blame you for being impatient. Sadly, I can also say that I can see how Brux would be having a hard time letting things out. I can understand his difficulty as he could be having difficulty sourcing materials safely, and the thought of being stuck in a hot-spot area with a family can… Give you other priorities.
Yeah true. I’ll wait as long as I need to and understand especially with the situation we’re in. Just can’t wait to test these guys out ha.
Can’t say that I blame you. They look good.
Zeos might have OCD’t my brain more… than normally.
I’ll ask anyway. I’m i the only one that finds those bit janky? Colors are nice but that tiny bit of wonk is getting to me. lol
Damm you Z!
No they’re not at all. The heatshrink at the minixlr is causing them to twist just a bit. The braiding and connectors are done really well. This is literally right after I took them out of the box. A little massage to the heatshrink has helped them a bit. They feel great wearing them. Nice and light but still quality feeling. I also did the shirt and jacket rubbing test on them and not any of the microphonics you get from the fabric wrapped cables.
Not to mention these are only like 35 bucks a pop. I think they’re great. Same model as the ursine cables at a Small fraction of the price. Those things could really run up there in price!
Your Pentaconn cable is on the way! Thanks for the mention on the forum here. In reading the threads I have to mention that I do try to ensure based on the cable that I make them very secure at the connectors, and there is from time to time the chance that I may need to use more heatshrink than normal. I would also agree that using para-cord does result in more micro-phonics, and I have been a big Kimber Kable fan from almost 30 years back when I sold HiFi in San Diego, and believe in the braided cables having superior external interference rejection while making for a great pliable and non micro-phonic choice. I didn’t get a chance to snap a photo of the new cable coming your way so would love to see it paired up with your setup when you get it!
