šŸ”· Dan Clark Audio Aeon 2 (MrSpeakers)

How would still using adhesive to stick on a pad solve his issue when he mentioned that heā€™s not going to pad roll a headphone that has to stick on the pads? Rather curious as removing adhesives generally makes them weaker or just not stick at all so while yeah you could pad swap easily you canā€™t really go back easily. I look forward to seeing how you solve this. I am all for the idea of being able to pad roll my aeons if we can actually switch them around without issues. Hopefully, if you can resolve the pad roll issue with the headphone also can release the other fabric types for it as well such as Suede or Velour for someone who wants a bit more air on the Open back Aeon. Will definitely be keeping my eye on this since Aeon is one of my favorite headphones and I have plans to move to Aeon 2 in the very near future.

Its sorta like Blue Tack where you can keep reapplying it over and over. Its a sweet product!

Iā€™m looking for a closed back with great isolation for those nearby that can hang with my other planars, Ananda & LCD2C. Is this the cans for me? I can also pick up a used Aeon flow closed for around $325 USD. Is this worth the extra money?

I briefly auditioned the original aeon flow closed and thought they sounded special.

The earlier Dan Clark closed headphones suffered from sounding significantly compressed at Lower (read rational) volumes, the Aeon 2 closed is supposed to resolve this.
If it does itā€™s worth the extra.

Thanks for the input! Iā€™ll be eyeing a used aeon 2 then.

I donā€™t know if itā€™s just me, but I do find all the planars Iā€™ve tried love to be played loud. I always thought they sounded best with a clean fast amp with excessive power.

Hey @RenEH just sold my pair of Aeon2C I had as I wanted to get different cans to review. The biggest thing I found with the A2C is giving it plenty of current. So choose an amp that can provide that and they really come alive.

Did anyone here happen to upgrade from the Mr. Speakers Mad Dogs to the Aeon 2ā€™s? If so, could you perhaps share what you found to be different, better or worse between the two? Iā€™d like to perhaps find an improved set of cans over the Mad Dogs (while keeping them closed as I donā€™t like outside sound leaking in), but Iā€™m leery if spending another $500 is going to net me all that much. Powering the Mad Dogs with a Schiiit Magni by the way.

Iā€™m a bit late to reply here, and I will start with the caveat that I havenā€™t heard the Mad Dogs in years. I remember being blown away with them at the time, but that was considering that they were a mod of a headphone that didnā€™t initially impress me. For better or for worse, the Aeon2 Closed are very different and come with their own benefits and drawbacks depending on your preferences.

The one thing I can say about the Aeon 2C is that the Mad Dogs canā€™t touch the build quality. To me the weight and comfort of DCA headphones is the defining characteristic. They weigh absolutely nothing on your head, and the pads isolate well and are very comfortable. But at the same time, they donā€™t feel fragile or flimsy in any way, compared to something from Hifimanā€™s lower end range for example.

As for sound, all the T50 mods impress me because I didnā€™t love the T50s initially. Whether Mad Dogs or Argons, both give you a better and more comfortable product than Fostex gave you, but the driver limitations persist despite the tuning. I think the Aeon 2C give a much more balanced sound, but you wonā€™t get that spine rocking bass you get from the Argons, and to a lesser extent from memory, the Mad Dogs. I use my Aeon 2Cs every day at work because they are easy to drive and super comfortable, but at home I prefer a dynamic headphone off of my tube amp for the punch and dynamics. I wouldnā€™t say thatā€™s non-existant, but it doesnā€™t seem to be a priority for DCA, and the lack of dynamics/punch/slam seems to be the common criticism I read most often for all of his headphones. To my ears, these have the best punch of his recent releases, including the Ether CX, and they donā€™t need to be played at very high volume to sound good the way the original Aeons apparently needed.

Iā€™ve got a decent selection of headphones, and the A2C arenā€™t close to my highest performing, but are my most used planars and itā€™s not close. I have Empyreans, Audeze XC, and HE-6SE and I enjoy their technical capabilities more, but if I plan to have hour plus listening sessions, and especially if Iā€™m portable/not on my main desktop rig, the A2C are my planar pick.

Confused why I hear more about the closed version than I do the opensā€¦ even on third party sales itā€™s always closed. People seem aeon 2 opens

Thanks so much for the reply Onaha! I think in the last few days Iā€™ve come to the conclusion that my plan is now going to be to keep my Mad Dogs and perhaps go with something a bit different for another set of cans. Originally I had thought that closed was the only way I wanted to go as I prefer the isolation from the rest of the world while listening at home, however now with working from home and my kids being older Iā€™m beginning to think that need is not as prevalent as it once was. While the Aeon 2ā€™s portability would certainly be a plus, I donā€™t think Iā€™d tend to take a can of their price out and about honestly with the exception of the occasional airline flight.

Needless to say, now Iā€™m considering some Audeze LCD2 Cā€™s, LCD2 Xā€™s or even the Hifiman Anandaā€™s just for something a bit different. Granted, I do still wonder if I will notice much of a positive increase in sound quality for my money over the MDā€™s.

I havent read the thread now, but i wanna ask something.
Im just watching William Murdocks ( the headphone experience) first impressions video of the Aeon 2 open. He said that its sound signature reminds him of the T1 ( he loved that one).
So im curious now, has anyone compared these two? Im still in the search for a more comfortable headphone and since i love the T1.2 ( comfort still bugs me a bit, even with new pads) something similar with an ear shaped cup would be really nice!

Could get it for 777ā‚¬ new at the moment and really thinking of ordering these to try them out.

I have them and answerā€¦ ā€œCan you say pillows on your ears?ā€

pillows on your ears sounds really really good!

I have several ā€œComfyā€ headphonesā€¦ Lcd2 pre, Night hawk OG, Focal ELEX, and othersā€¦ The DCA Aeon 2 is the most comfortable followed by the Audeze with the new headband.

My only problem is always the shape of the earcupā€¦everything round that is not audeze size is a bit weirdā€¦

Iā€™m just reading and watching videos about it and I think I shouldnā€™t have an impulse reaction and buy these nowā€¦even though they seem to be pretty comfortableā€¦
I think I should just not buy anything till I sold my LCD2C

Hi everyone! Iā€™m new here, my first post!

After many days of researchā€¦ I decided to take the plunge and buy these. Along with them, I have bought my first dac, the e30. I think it should go well with my jds atom, from what I have read so far.

My path so far: he4xx, jds atom -> e30, aeon 2 closed.

The he4xx were not cutting it for me anymore, mostly them being open. I live in a noisy apartment, and I hate getting interrupted. So I started my search to find the ā€œoneā€ to fit my needsā€¦ For me, it came down to the Focal Elegia and Aeon 2 Closed.

I ended up choosing the Aeon 2 closed for 4 reasons:

  1. The seal is better when wearing glasses, better bass. The Elegia need to have a good seal, otherwise you lose some of the bass.
  2. The Elegia can sound metallic.
  3. They are currently on sale for $764.99.
    https://danclarkaudio.com/aeon-2/aeon-2.html
  4. The Elegia are not currently on sale. $599 on amazon and $690 on adorama, even though they are discontinued? Maybe I will buy them when they are <$450.

Well, I hope I made the right decision. The aeon 2 closed seemed like the best closed headphone for under $1000. Not sure if headphones over $1000 are worth it at the moment, but I still wanted to buy the best closed headphone. I have an eclectic taste in music, so I know that they will not be good for everything. I will be using these for tv shows/movies/music/gaming.

So Iā€™m open to any other suggestions. I also looking at the neumann ndh20 (seems to be uncomfortable) and argons (too much bass). Also I have seen people talk about fostex and denon headphones, donā€™t know which ones are good and for what. Are there any headphones that are good or atleast somewhat good for everything?

Hope everyoneā€™s having a good one!

Welp, aeon 2 NOIRE just releasedā€¦ check apos

Right off the bat, not very compelling to me reading the description lol, theyā€™ve gave it a black finish which is nice, but then make it harman tuned and tried to add more stage width? Hard pass on the harman tuning as the stock aeon 2 was already imo pretty competently tuned, and stage I wonder if it sounds like artificial added width or they have added more width smoothly (as I do think more space might be nice)

I ordered a pair of the Aeon 2 Noire from Woo Audio, but they are probably not going to show before the beginning of January. I have a pair of the normal Aeon 2 Closed. The Black finish looks way better then the red. Would have been better if the carbon fiber and the black metallic part of the earcups had a matte finish.

Anyone have experience with the Noires that can comment on how they compare to the regular aeon 2s? Curious to hear how they stack up since the black a esthetically is much more appealing IMO.
