🔷 Dan Clark Audio Aeon 2 (MrSpeakers)

I think the more I listen the more I see the Aeolus as genre specific as well. Not super picky but some stuff isn’t the best. I don’t know if it’s because some stuff doesn’t take to the mids and mid bass as much or something. All rock sounds great on them and Motown, 80e stuff. And live is great. But I was listening to some newer stuff like the new Gorillaz album and it wasn’t as great.

The aeons seem to be better as all rounders. Takes all music in well but the Aeolus beat them in specific genres. Overall I had to pick one it’d almost be the aeons for they’re wider range of suited genre even though the Aeolus beats them in a number of genres fir me. Like mmmmmmmm Red Hot Chili Peppers on the Aeolus right now is just great.

I think I’ll burn them both in more over the ne t few days. I think the zmfs have like 50ish hours from direct listening and 20 to 30 is on the aeons.

Depends on amps a lot too. The aeons sound good off of my rnhp, jot, and my m11. The Aeolus is best on the rnhp, good on the jot, but I dint like them on the m11 very much for some reason. They’re powered fine but something seems missing. I run them balanced on like 90-100 Out of 120 on low gain and they’re loud but not as full sounding. Maybe I should do high gain at a lower volume?

The aeons run balanced between 90-100 as well on low gain but keep their same presentation as on the rnhp for the most part.

Is it just because the Aeolus want more juice even though they’re getting loud still on low gain on the m11. I’m guessing it’s that. Hmmmmmmm

On the Lyr3 I run HIGH gain with the Aeon 2 Opens here…70 - 80 db is about 11 oclock measured with a 1KHz test tone,90 db is about 12 oclock…but this is with a test tone thats continuos when listening to music the amplitudes and or peaks may be all over the map considering how the song was recorded and mastered etc…so you may have to adjust this for you “ears” but be careful to loud for to long is not good!

Listening to some old Doors…the 40th anniversary mixes, and its really very good “now” wide open soundstage…glad I got the Opens now…bass is now coming into its own…tight and can be played loud with no distortion…

I dont use replay gain, so I have to keep adjusting my volume know for each tune if the gain is different…and at times I forget to be ready to do this and some bass entry notes almost knocks me off my seat!! Ha! Really awesome.

Bob Dylan on Traveling Wilburys is really “wide” open , really pretty good for headphones…Dylans raspy older voice is very much reproduced well…guitars background vocals…seems these Opens are and will work very good with live presentation…all those artists that perform live at Carnegie Hall etc…

Quick question. Would it be possible to use the Audeze Boom Mic cable with the DCA Aeon 2?

No, they don’t use mini xlr so it wouldn’t be compatible

Of Course not, missed that small but really important part. thanks

Any idea how these compare to the Aeon Open X? Do the included filters for that can cause any significant change in sound quality?

IMO they are a fair bit better, the aeon open x share more in common with the aeon flow open which is alright from my experience

Yes, they do affect the sound to a significant amount

One shock after passing the 60 hour mark and testing the Opens with 10 different amps was being 13 ohms and not that efficient I didnt try my Tuba EL 84 parafeed amp…last week I tried it for grins and even though the TUBA is not a high powered amp, the Aeon 2 opens worked VERY well with the amp, its IMO the best pairing to date of all my amps! The tonality and clarity is very nice…the only other amp that works almost as well is the Schiit Lyr 3.

I have a HUGO TT 2 on the way for testing and will be interesting to see how this will work in this combination…

so… are you saying these are better than the LCD-X? Or do i need both?

So I think the aeon 2 and the lcd x aren’t the same, and I can see someone owning both, just depends on what you like and what you are after sound wise

@Flip Yeah the Aeon 2 isn’t bad at all. And you could always buy the closed version, which sounds pretty open and then get an LCD-X as an open.

I have both. In terms of technicalities the Audeze LCD-X are the better headphones. Aeon 2 Closed have no dynamics, but one is closed and the other one is open. not a fair comparsion.

Imo the aeon 2 has solid dynamics, but it does matter what amp you are using, they like their power, but I would agree the lcdx is superior in terms of technicalities

What amp would suggest? I have the asgard 3 /(bifrost on backorder for the dac ) for desktop but would love a recommendation for portable amp/dac. Portable has to be battery ,powered but could also have feed from USB to be a standalone while traveling.

If you look around you can find them bstock for the 700 ish mark

The desktop setup you have planned should be plenty good, for a portable, I typically use mine with an ifi idsd micro black label and it’s great, and if you look used you can find them for around 400 usd
