DMS top 5 headphones under 500$

You own T5p’s and you don’t like treble? I own the T5p.2’s and they are the epitome of treble.

I wasn’t trying to insult you and I don’t care if you are a musician. I simply don’t understand the irrational hatred of Grado’s.

I guess I will just file this under “we all hear differently”.

Shane D

I modded my T5P for that very reason.

I dont know what you were trying to accomplish by calling my hearing special, but it won’t help you win any good will.

I have literally tried every single model in the Grado line…they all sound the same, but with small nuances. They have 0 soundstage, which makes the upper mid and treble presentation aggressive. They all have a huge spike from 1 to 2 khz that makes piano reverberate unnaturally and the treble slopes upward from 5 khz to around 12. The ps500, sr80e and modded rs2 are the only ones that don’t exaggerate that unnatural upper mid peak.

Lol those are the ones out of the lineup that I enjoy the most

This is pretty funny : )

It’s not irrational. Most Grados are specific headphones with a darn specific sound signature. Unchanged from like 50 years ago. You don’t put two damn mountains in your FR graph and dig a hole under 100hz and expect everyone to love it all. You either love it or hate it. For me? Hah! They’re in my personal “defective by design” category. IMHO, you want good Grados? They’re called Koss kph30i’s, for 1/5th to 1/50th of the price.

…or the GW100, maybe.

Hmmm, for the fact that you say that you have trained hearing, this is an incomprehensible statement for me.
There are some significant differences, at least for me, because an RS2e and a PS2000e are very different from the others, each on there own way.
Even the rest have acoustic differences.
And as far as spatial representation is concerned, Grado is actually known for having a wonderful stage representation.

With the Beyer T5 I go with it when you pull on the soft pads of the DT 1770!

But that’s MY view of theeeese things, nobody HAS to share them with me

What do you think of the Beyerdynamic T5p? Thing about Beyer is the headphones most people buy and talk about in audiophilia are the studio ones the DT’s but the ones for pleasure listening dont get talked about that much. makes me assume they arent very good.

Grados ive been hearing about for a loooong time lol. I remember looking at a article way back in the 90’s. it was about high-end headphones. and back then there were only a few companies that did audiophile grade headphones i guess. they only mentioned Sennheiser, STAX, Koss and Grado. and they talked about grado with reverence. Like they were the best. lol i remember them talking about the wood chambers grado had with one of the headphones and how special that was. also they mentioned 2 headphones cost 1000$! wow

So when i started getting headphone i got the 225e. i was disapointed, sounded boring.

Grado have their own tuning and design language which they have been true to for many decades. Love it or hate it they understand what their sound signature is and their headphones implement it consistently. I respect them for that. Personally I am not really a fan of Grado but I also think that the world of headphones would be much poorer without companies like Grado.

The T5P is pretty decent. I’m going through some basic modding with them at the moment, but they are probably my favorite Beyerdynamic. The 2nd gen version definitely has less treble than gen 1.

I sold my SR325 after starting to expand my headphone collection - but now missing grado. How does the RS2 differ from the SR325?

Did you like the Sr325?

Grado has some pretty high end offerings theres one headphone thats 1800$ i wonder how it sounds.

The thing is i hate their pads. i wish they had better pads.

I did… But was coming off of a 598 so it sounded exciting and new.

While I answer you here I have the RS2e on my head and hear the abum:

The Chesky Edition by Sara K.

I would say that they sound a little warmer than the SR325.

In any case, they are perceptibly more defined, clearer in the staggering of the individual voices and instruments.

The bass has a very natural touch and is also present here (contrary to popular opinion).

Voices and instruments mostly come across naturally, without even ending in any peaks that hurt or annoy you.

Overall, this headphone is relatively fast, sometimes you get the impression that you have a magnetostat on your head.
In my eyes, when it comes to clarity, speed and naturalness, he easily puts my two ChiFi’s over-ear’s in his pocket.

The stage presentation is quite open and well staggered.
I would call it a club atmosphere rather than a concert hall.

In addition, he is really very comfortable with the pads I put on the GS1000e, even for me as a real thick skull.

All in all, in my opinion, the RS2e sounds like a “grown-up” headphone from the entire portfolio, especially since it is significantly cheaper than my second faforit the PS200e, which reproduces the whole thing much more clearly.

As I said, I like these headphones very much as you can easily hear them out. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts

PS: I would certainly not want to hear Rammstein or electronic sound productions with these headphones, for example

I have never heard the RS2e’s. In Grado world they are well thought of. Unlike the RS1e which seems to have generated a lot of hatred.

I was looking at the RS2e’s when I stumbled upon the GH2’s.

Then the old T5p would be unusable to me. Talk about piercing. Even the second gen can be tiring if you don’t make adjustments.

I am certainly not trying to win any good will with you.

We definitely hear very differently.

The 2nd gen T5P had a manufacturing change is the driver screen damping somewhere after the Astell Kern T5P edition, according to some head fi posts I saw. I do agree the T5P 1st gen was really bad…that purpose of gen 2 was so tame the treble some 6 db and boost the bass.

If you haven’t heard the RS2, you are missing out. I think the RS2 and PS500 both are solid. They still have the house grado 1 to 2 khz peak, but instead of the house 10 to 12 db spike, it’s more around 5 to 6 db, which is much more tasteful IMO. Acoustic instruments in particular sound pretty damn good. But as usual, Grados have to be used with the proper synergy in gear and genre of music to really stand out. They definitely aren’t all rounder type of headphones…but if you are listening to Bob Dylan on vinyl with a liquid spark and Enog2 pro with a pair of PS500 or Rs2…sounds pretty damn good.

Yeah, I like my headphones to be “everythingizers” too, so… Grados are not for me.

Dang now I want to pick up a grado lol. Looking at picking up a ps2000e, seeing how well that fares. Can get one for a good price

That’s what is the hard pill to swallow for me, because I have such a huge assortment of different genres that I listen to. But, I have gotten to the point where I have a solid collection of all rounders, so I have entertained the notion of picking up a Grado PS500, but I certainly dont want to pay full price. If I can get one under $300, I definitely would if they were in good shape. Listening to stringed instruments on the PS500 is very nice…especially the Greek music I grew up listening to that features the bazouki, which is similar to a mandolin but a much higher pitch.

In the video, the gentleman to the left is playing the bazouki…
