In the 80s I think it was just a zoom lens over 60mm, but I don’t think it as clear today.
The one I had was the Olympus Stylus Epic 80 Zoom. It has motorized zoom, and auto loading, which weren’t very common at the time.

Correct, anything over 60mm is considered a Telephoto but nowadays it’s mostly 85mm and above. 60mm lenses aren’t that common.
I agree, some things I’m learning here for free other folks be paying for
Maybe time to rename …Hifi&PhotographyGuides…almost has a ring to it
I’m hyped so many of you are getting something out of the discussion!
A very special thanks to my buddy @MMag05 for giving me the opportunity to get the NighJar Singularity in house. I’ve heard these IEMs 2 separate times and both of which at CanJam. I wasn’t wowed by them either time, so I think I needed to give them their due diligence on some Desktop gear.
I haven’t really put them through their paces quite yet, but I think they’re a fantastic single DD IEM with an insanely natural playback and plenty of holographic goodness.
I think the design is super simple, but very effective.
I also have a soft spot for anything involving black holes or space exploration, so, that’s a plus.
btw next time you take an awesome pic like that with the dark background but exposed subject (I assume it is RAW and edited aftewards), can you also show the unedited jpg version?
Sure! I got you - I can help with editing tips as well, always willing to help if I can
Looking forward to further impressions. Singularity has been my favorite IEM to date. It’s easily my most listened to IEM I’ve owned. Just love how laid back and warm it is while having a such a slamming bass presence that scales so well to the song. It’s not an IEM for those seeking a detailed analytical sound but, it definitely hammers in the party fun vibe. Ever since purchasing it I’ve crushed on it so hard I haven’t even been really tempted to look else where for satisfaction. She’s my true love
Don’t tell that to UP or Panda though they may be lurking in the shadows. Don’t want to start a fight between them.
Also fire pictures as always. Really loving the dark vibe of the photo with the pop on the gold.
Beautiful compostions. I think you’ve convinced me to get the 85mm, lol. Seriosuly tho, great shots!!
woah this 90mm G master ?
Exactly! The closer the camera is to the subject, the more light it generally captures, especially with larger sensors and a wider aperture that have better light sensitivity (while in the case of camera that have smaller sensors, you will have to get a lot closer eg: phones).
At a closer range, light sources appear larger and softer relative to the subject, reducing harsh shadows. When you’re farther away, the light appears smaller and more directional, which can create stronger contrast and deeper shadows.
That’s why portrait photographers often use diffusers or softboxes to mimic that “close-up” soft light effect, even when shooting from a distance, which is also the same technique thats used for product photography, especially for small objects like in ear monitors since small objects can be highly reflective
I know that there was a lot of hype around the singularity, how would you comapre it to the duality? Not sure if its the picture or the iems that look so good, but I think your pictures are better shot than the stock ones on their website lol xD
I wonder how these would look if they were shot with 2 or 3-step bracketing
It´s only a Sony G lens, not G-Master, still great!
This morning is my first time putting them on the Desktop power - There is a clear difference in the bass tactility and attack with the extra power coming from the SH-9 with the balanced output. It makes sense - Felix from Symphonium explained it well enough to me during CanJam that I finally understood why with some IEMs the extra power translates to a difference in SQ.
Even though the Singularity is pretty easy to drive, honestly, they’re unlike other sets from the Symphonium/NightJar/Subtonic crew in that way. I can run them in low gain at a relatively low volume level to reach pretty high volumes but with bass, on some IEMs that is, because drum kicks are such a quick transient, only lasting for a split second, it needs a ton of immediate power to be really fleshed out. It’s an immediate 'pop" of sound that benefits from a lot of power reserve. I can hear it…
The Singularity is most definitely a warm leaning IEM, it’s like a huge weight blanket being put around your shoulders during a cold winter night. There’s a fireplace in the corner, the lights are dimmed and you have a nice glass of whiskey in hand watching a live performance. They’re incredibly natural sounding, the timbre across the entire FR is so spot on from bass lines, to vocals (which are a little husked up nicely), to the tsk tsk tsk of ride cymbals and the splash from big crash cymbals. They’re also dynamic as hell… I can see why you like them so much, Mags! They might not be detail monsters like you said, but that isn’t what they’re going for. They’re also really comfortable! The shells are super small and the nozzle is long enough to stay secured in my ears for longer listening sessions.
Thanks again for the opportunity!
Thank you, Brev
Thanks, bro! 85mm with a fast aperture, 1.8 or 1.4 in my case is a necessity for any photog IMO.
The Duality is just a hilarious IEM. It’s really hard to describe them without just saying ‘BASS’ but in reality they’re a marvel of personal audio engineering. Just 2 DDs making that kind of sound is pretty incredible IMO. There is Zero distortion, what’s so ever. It’s such a stark contrast to the Scarlet Mini, which was a distortion disaster when I heard them. The Duality in the lowest Bass setting would be enough to satisfy 100% of bassheads, I have no issues with saying that. The highest bass setting is just a hoot - I don’t think most people would keep them there, but every once in a while for a bit of fun? Hell yeah. They’re f*cking expensive for being a 1 trick pony, but damn, they do it extremely well. And thanks again for the compliments on the pics, brother! I don’t mess with bracketing too much but I guess I could try one day. Just need to dust off the ol’ tripod lol
As requested, good sir
The top is obviously unedited.
If you have any questions, I could probably do a screen capture tutorial for you and send it your way to give you a sense of my process. But I try to do as much as possible in camera.
hmm, im pretty sure the led panels I got do have some diffuser on them.
What is that?
@domq422 using mouse pads seems like a easy and cheap way to get a black and non reflective surface?
Like this?

Or maybe this would be more fun to use?

you did some cropping and then somehow made the contrast higher?
Bracketing is when you take multiple images with either a different exposure on each, to account for highlights, shadows and mid range or with different focusing. This is good for macro shots when you have a super small subject, like IEMs and you want the entire subject in focus but you also want to use a wide open aperture. You then take all of those images and combined them in photoshop and viola, you get an HDR image for the exposure and a perfectly focused subject for the focusing technique.
That’s how our phones do it for HDR images. It takes 3 or 4 images at different exposures and mush them together using software
Yes, sir. Only downside, it attracts a ton of dust. You have to use editing techniques to get rid of all of the dust.
heh, a lot more than that but yeah, that’s def part of it.
yeahhh thats the downside with cloth based mouse pads. There are plastic ones afaik but those are kinda glossy iirc.
