Yeah, that’s a good way to go about it.
Maybe I should just get on the EQ bandwagon… idk. I know I should.

EQ is used EVERYWHERE else in the production chain. Why leave out the part you can change for your ear? and one can still simply not load the app to listen native…nothing lost.
I do get the argument.
It’s almost like I want to succumb to the FOMO that comes baked into this hobby. I love the discovery and chase aspects of this hobby, I can’t lie. Being interested in the next big thing keeps things fresh. For me at least.
My two favorite aspects of this space is discovering new music & discovering new IEMs. EQ takes away from one of those aspects.
Ah, you’re still young, young man. As I’ve aged I’ve learned to gain more enjoyment and contentment in learning the subtle aspects of things I already have. ![]()
I used to chase tubes, rare expensive tubes, most of which the pedigree is long since lost…some were amazing until they weren’t. Like a sunrise or sunset the expiration date came all too quickly with hot degrading filaments.
While this is a hobby of comparison - comparison is truly the thief of joy
EQ allows me to adjust to my hearing. Mornings can be quite different than evenings. Sometimes I have to pull out a few db in the bass region and other times I need to boost a few db. Same source, same IEMs.
Well said, I do agree with you. I have enough wisdom to know you’re right, but I’m just naive enough to not follow in your words. Dumb young mind lol
There is no right or wrong philosophy when it comes to EQ, it’s simply another tool to keep in your belt. I use it far more with Speakers and Subs than with IEMs, Buds or Headphones and that’s mostly because I’m dealing with room modes which don’t apply to headphones.
I have used EQ, but not often. It is not any kind of active decision for or against, I just never bother really😅. I don’t have a specific tuning target I want to reach, and enjoy the differences between IEM’s. But it is a powerful tool for sure!
Me too bro ![]()
You said it better than I could, I agree.
I EQ all the time. My ears are so badly damaged I have no choice. But I am of that age and circumstance; it is what it is. I am just grateful to have a tool that can bring me closer to the music.
Sorry to hear about your hearing but glad that you find ways to make it work! That’s what it’s all about.
Thank you. Over 35 years of working in Data Centers and “other” control rooms as well as this damned cholesteatoma disease have definitely taken their toll on me. I’m fortunate to be able to hear anything at all. But I’m still in the game! ![]()
I hear that. I spent 4 four of my younger years working around helicopters daily (and occasionally harriers and jets) so I know all about it haha. I consider it both luck and a privilege that I still get up to ~15.5-16khz with normal gain and up to ~17khz with excess, but ever since I got into audio I have been careful to always watch my listening levels for extended periods. I still work in loud process areas today, but they’re all earplugs mandatory so it’s not terrible.
I guess the HDD and fan noise are that noisy in them?
100% - They gotten much more efficient but more dense. Back in the day they used to run fans at full blast to cool procs and mostly drive arrays. And then there was the air handling to keep the place cool. Constant!
Here’s the last one I built in 2011. It’s still in use unchanged. Only the gear in the racks changes/gets smaller/more powerful.
This one was actually quite nice to be in. The air was supplied into the room from the ceiling and went through the front of the cabinets and then return up the back plenum with the back all sealed so the air flow was as efficient as possible sending cooled air in and evacuating hot air directly out the back to the dual massive air handler cooling units located in an adjacent room. Average dB was ~70. A normal conversation could be had ![]()
Yeah…i can actually imagine how loud it is…i bought a 40mm server fan and god damn it is fricking loud even at the lowest speed i could set lol. (cools a ton more than noctua but that noise…)
More than 33 years of working in professional motorsports and playing in two rock bands for the last 13 years have taken their toll on my hearing. Upper-end hearing is pretty bad, and I have severe tinnitus.
I started using quality plugs about 10 or 11 years ago at work, all gigs and rehearsals, at live shows I attend, on the lawn mower, with chain saws, etc. But it was too late.
PROTECT YOUR HEARING TODAY, people!
Yeah I was in a proper data center for the first time a couple months ago and it’s shocking how noisy it is in there with the industrial cooling systems. Had ear-protection on the whole time, thankfully.
The horizon really is a gem. Does a lot for the price, and I think I also preferred its tuning over the MMK4: tighter in the bass and a little more risqué in the treble ![]()

I put up my Harrier impressions in case anyone was at all interested.
There are so many other reviews at this point of this set, I didn’t feel the need to go in depth shitting on them lol
Spoiler; these just don’t work for me in the slightest.
Nice. There are certain advantages and disadvantages to not having a raised floor. I think over the span of my career I have built more raised floor facilities, especially the bigger ones. Cold Isle Containment, Hot Isle Containment (which as a human I hated, the machines didn’t seem to care for that architecture either!) and so on. It’s been fascinating to watch the changes in design language over time, and energy was usually the hottest topic of conversation.
See what I did there? ![]()
BTW, the noise levels in some of those places exceeded 100db in certain pods. High density, liquid cooled environments. Radical stuff.
