Earbuds Discussion Thread

My right Serratus earbud keeps falling off quite easily. Where did you buy these? Could be a gamechanger for me.

You can get many types off of AliExpress. I put a link to one of the types that I purchased that I think work well.

Edit 2: A link for some I found on Amazon in case that’s better for you. I have never used these.

Hello and welcome to HFG! Since you posted on the Earbud Discussion Thread, isnit safe to assume you’re an earbud aficionado? If so you’re in good company as we have quite a few avid earbud fans around here, including me. Would you mind me asking what buds and associated gear you’re primarily using?

Edit: Tagging @Telestar because I hit the wrong reply button…for the millionth time. :man_facepalming:

I hope I’m replying to you properly, and yeah it’s safe to assume I’m a bud pilled individual. In fact buds are all I really use these days. Current favorites are Rikus Saber 1, as well as his Grand Berserker 2. Chaccone is another one I’m a fan of. I have a small archive full of all my gear in my bio. (The tiny url)

Nice! Riku makes some good buds for sure. And, yes, you replied to me properly. I have a growing collection of buds myself. It soubds like you’re gonna fit in just fine around here. :sunglasses:

Hello and welcome! Just checked out your archive and ranking list - looks like you’re missing some TGXear buds

Hah you got that right! I don’t work while I’m at uni, so I lack the funds at the moment. Gonna need to wait a depressing 4-5 months until I can get one. I have my eyes on the Serratus, been told that’s the best all arounder.

I highly recommend messaging TGXear on Instagram or headfi - he will give you a recommendation based on your preferred sound signature and library. While the Serratus is the most well-known model, I think his other sets all have their unique value proposition.

Of course, you can also continue to expand your Rikubud collection - there are plenty of options!

Whenever I have the money to get one Ill message him to hopefully learn a bit more about each of his buds, to learn which might be best for me. I’ve heard nothing but good things about each of them.

@JAnonymous5150 what Blur earbuds do you have. I just got a pair of 173 PK32s and they are fantastic. Just wondering what else in his care log is good, if you know

First I want to thank @rattlingblanketwoman for the opportunity to demo the Serratus.

I’ll start by saying that anyone who has followed my post probably knows a few things about my preferences. Number one being I’m somewhat treble sensitive, not extremely though, around the 3-5k range. Second I prefer a target where sub and midbass sit at higher decibals than treble or at at least equal. There are some outliers here though to be transparent like the P1 Max and SA Meteor. That I thing suite me because the treble is smooth with no glaring peaks. I’m also not a fan of super resolving sets. Lastly, I prefer moderate to higher volume listening sessions not bordering deafening. You give me these things and it’s game on for hours with a listening session.

For reference here is my current rotation and my top dogs to date.

I bring that all that up because I was honestly convinced the Serratus wouldn’t be for me. However, I had to hear for myself. Thought it would be to bright, fatiguing, lack in bass and to resolving. Well I’m here to say it’s none of those for me. I thought about breaking down my thoughts but, I’d just be an echo chamber of all the great things already said about it.

The only small thought I’ll leave is what for me is the highlight. Imaging and separation, especially the center imaging, are bangers on Serratus. Best I’ve heard to date. Along the lines of @nymz it damn near sounds like a true well tuned stereo setup.

I get it now and why there’s so much talk about it. The sad part is I kind of didn’t want to as now I’ll be out of more money. Good news these bad boys are going in my top dog collection. So what do you say @rattlingblanketwoman you want to empty my pocket.

yeeee join the club! and prepare your wallet! if you find the MX500 shells comfortable, then TGXear has more offerings for you haha. I’m A/Bing the Ripples and Serratus as we speak

I’ll be hopefully be getting to demo Ripples in the coming weeks. I should have added to my comment that Serratus is probably my new bare minimum for neutral. Still seems to have a somewhat neutral-bass tuning. Anything less I don’t thing I’d have liked it. What I think is key is it’s very track dependent. Its not presenting anything as it wasn’t master it seems. If it’s hip-hop bam the bass is there where’s as if it’s a soft rock ballet it’s evenly in the mix. No matter what way though man is it beautifully presented.

haha wow, glad you’re liking the Serratus across so many genres! I don’t like vocal-centric songs on it because the vast stage sometimes makes the vocalist sound empty. Ripples presents such songs much more intimately and, IMO, more realistically

While they’re not 1:1 with the Serratus, you may find the GAS2 to tickle your fancy for a lot less $$$.

Woke up early today to battle out these two titans.

I’m going to get straight to the point. TGXear went the complete opposite way I thought it would with these two offerings. The battle didn’t last nearly long as I thought it would though, Ripples is not for me.

Does that make it bad. Not at all it’s just not my cup of tea. I can completely understand where others are coming from. As Ripples ultimate strengths, and where the love from them probably comes from, are actually its achilles tendon for my liking.

The mid bass texture is phenomenal and what I feel others may see as the star of the show. Literally “ripples” of texture flow off mid bass. It’s an extreme pleasure to hear. While vocals are extremely well presented, forward and sound fresh. Cymbals and hi-hats are well presented and sound forward and natural. I’d go into more detail but, feel others have highlighted more than I could conjure.

Now had I heard Ripples first I’d probably have settled. Why do I mention settled. Because for all the texture you get in midbass it is back lacking in punch and energy compared to Serratus. Which for my taste makes Serratus more energetic and present to the instruments in this range. I find the Serratus brings the rhythm section more alive and cohesive to the song as a whole. Making it a more fun and engaging set.

Which leads to vocals. I’d give the upper hand to Ripples however, after comparing, I much prefer Serratus. Ripples present them forward and more present in the mix which detracts from the band. Which at some points almost makes Ripples distracting as I try to absorb the song as a whole. Summed up quickly I’d also say the same for the hi-hats, cymbals and other instruments upper ranges in this area.

Personally I think the Serratus does a much better job as a more musical and engaging bud. That is if your looking for something with more authority in the lower ranges or like long mid to high volume jam sessions look the way of Serratus. Both of which categories I fall in. And if you open it full throttle with power you’ll get world class imaging and separation that is absolutely mind blowing. Ripple’s definitely takes a back seat here. It’s worth noting though that if you’re a listener that fully values vocalists as your main priority Ripples is the way to go.

Lastly I can’t forget a shout out to @GooberBM for the opportunity to demo the Ripple.
